New publication alert! I contributed a chapter to the book Dis/Trusting the Digital World in Imaginative Literature (@edinburghup.bsky.social). My chapter touches on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” the Mechanical Turk hoax, and Charles Babbage's approach to establishing trust in machines.

My book made it to the Chicago Manual of Style! I don't know how I'm going to top this.

Thinking of the time when I bought two CDs from a stand at the WFMU record fair—"Momentum" by Monolake and "Jonathan Sings!" by Jonathan Richman—and the seller seemed to have trouble comprehending that the same person could want both of these albums.

I'm talking about this kind of thing
A Reddit post with the title "How some of you look like." A meme showing a man pointing at his reflection in the mirror. The text reads "My prompt is not the problem. Claude 3.5 is the problem."

If you see this, post something orange.
A poster on a lightpost in New York City reading, “Watch me eat this entire jar of cheeseballs / Union Square Park, April 27th 3pm.” The picture on the poster shows a person in a bright orange ski mask, lips pursed, holding a giant plastic jar of orange cheez puffs.

A hell of a way to start a book
A quotation from the frontmatter of Andrew I. Dale's book A History of Inverse Probability. It reads:

PROLOCUTION
It will be no strange thing at all for some to dislike the matter of this work, and others to be displeased with the manner and method of it. Easily can I forsee that my account will be too long and tedious for some, while others, perhaps, may be apt to complain of its being too short and concise.

I just switched back to MS Word after using Pages for a while, and I'm happy to find an old friend of mine in the File menu.

A panel from an old Batman comic. Robin is beginning to say, “I think I’ll read David Broo—.“ He is interrupted as Batman slaps him across the face, saying, “Never read David Brooks!”

In honor of Gary Larson’s birthday, please share a Far Side that you love. This one could have been the epigraph of my dissertation.
A ma has just finished labelling everything around him by painting on words: the tree, the house, the door, garbage can, shirt, pants, the cat, the dog. “Now!” He says . . . “That should clear up a few things around here!”

So it’s international cat day, then? Here’s a cat.
A cat, splayed on the carpet, staring at me as if I know what’s going on.
