I believe they figured out that they're not really useful in these situations. Even the collision sensor beeping is more annoying than anything, because you WANT your bumper to be in the "danger zone".

I "watch" podcast episodes of Words Unraveled when they pop up after I watch a video from RobWords, the YouTube channel of one of the hosts. YT's discovery and recommendation system has its flaws, but it's an absolute juggernaut. I think some pods may gain more AUDIO listeners from being on YT.

I was behind LDS missionaries in the Irish customs line. It stopped BOTH lines when they said they were there to "spread the word about Jesus Christ," because the man in the booth called the other one over so he could hear it. "Best of luck lads, but I think someone's beaten you to it."

The results are irrevocably skewed by the Millennial version of the "this is your brain on drugs" ad campaign.

The actor thing doesn't have to succeed on its own merits if it shows you can create some kind of persona-- a recognizable name and face attached to a semi-autonomous sock puppet that can interact with actual humans in real time.

I think these guys are just smelling their own farts, but the cynic in me says the use case is reversing the interview. An attractive young woman who will wear (or NOT wear) the clothes you want and will ask (or NOT ask) the questions you want. "Tilly sits down with Aaron Rodgers after the break..."

Every time I read a classic from the "Science fiction used to be about ideas!" crowd, the main idea turns out to be "in the future, beautiful women with large breasts will want to sleep with engineers."

We played our UCL matches in the Olympiastadion so more members could get tickets.

jbgannon.bsky.social @jbgannon.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
I went to the Europa League game in our stadium, which holds like 1/5 of the membership. Tickets for all games are lottery-based release followed by a members-only secondhand market site. That's not normal, but buying on the day sounds like a way to spend $$$ not to see a UCL match

jbgannon.bsky.social @jbgannon.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
My very vague understanding is you will pay more for tickets to matches at big name clubs. Not sure how it breaks down between countries, plus costs of living vary. Then the question is how much of a premium for Europe games. Ours were kept pretty low.

jbgannon.bsky.social @jbgannon.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Union Berlin v Real Madrid. Tickets were I think 35€-ish? At the Europa League game I went to I paid 9€ for 2 beers plus I think 4€ for a sandwich. That includes a 1€ deposit on the cup for the beer (I kept the cup instead).

I want 50+1 (with no loopholes). I once priced out Champions League vs Stanley Cup tickets and it was cheaper to fly to Berlin, stay in a hotel, eat and drink at the stadium, and get new fan merch than it was for one nosebleed seat for the first round. Why would club members charge ourselves more?

I know it's fake and all the numbers are made up but I still get played every time. "2,000 euro a month won't get you much in Berlin..." what the actual fuck are you talking about, totally legit real estate agent who also works in Barcelona, Dublin, and Zagreb?

I copyedited and proofread academic journals for a long time and I think bad academic writing is partially a learned style choice and partially the fear that peers will assume ignorance on the part of any author who doesn't anticipate and explicitly state every conceivable exception all. the. time.

In lower digits likely to be useful, 60 is divisible evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 18, and 20. 64 doesn't come close. Great for halving things a few times, not much use otherwise.

From some of the replies you may need to clarify what "highlighting" means. Is it selecting text without you meaning to, or is it marking up text like a spellchecker on a power trip? The former might be something stuck but the latter is a recurring problem with Editor and Copilot nonsense.

If you stylize boxing or any other combat sport enough to be compelling visually as a live theatrical event, you basically just end up reinventing pro wrestling. Movies are an entirely different medium.

My guess is audiences would place Lars somewhere in Scandinavia but often draw a blank on Soren. There may be names that perfectly signal "Danish uncle" to Danes or even other Scandinavians, but the rest of us likely won't pick up on it.

I'm thinking of ways to even try to answer this question statistically and I'm stumped. This one you actually HAVE to go "on vibes"! Did you read quickly and go for most common names for Danish men over x age?

Also, I just looked it up and it appears to be from Middle High German, not French. Modern German has Krapfen, which a bunch of people right now probably regret eating too many of yesterday!

The movement of words is not the same as the movement of things. "Kreplach" may have meant something completely different to a Rhineland Yiddish speaker in one time than it did to a speaker in Poland in another.

You can find dumplings on menus under "Peking Ravioli". That doesn't mean they're secretly Italian. A Yiddish speaker thinking "This looks a bit like a tiny folded crepe," is immaterial to the origin of the dish itself.

No idea how well-researched this particular map is, but names for a thing are not the same as the thing itself and etymology is a very unreliable stand-in for history.

The Temptations' most popular songs were so ubiquitous on "oldies" stations that they're also in a weird blind spot for crate diggers who are looking for "new old stuff" to play. Even though they would absolutely kill and a bunch of people would be up at the booth asking who that last track was

The issue is that the system was set up to have independent operators run the night train services. It doesn't matter if they could theoretically use the cars on the 15:15 to Berlin, because they don't have a 15:15 to Berlin.

jbgannon.bsky.social @jbgannon.bsky.social · 29/12/2025
What you are describing is not possible in the system described by the article. They can't run them "during the day" because they do not have access to those slots.
100
jbgannon.bsky.social @jbgannon.bsky.social · 29/12/2025
That's the problem they're describing, not the solution. How do you pay off the cost of new couchette cars when they're only in service once a day? You either lose money for a long time or you price your market out of existence.

Bernstein on the Beach. A minimalist compilation: 3 hours of jazz standards, but with the leads removed. The best sidemen in history comping horns that aren't there along with just the left hands of the greatest jazz pianists ever.

The narrative is so ingrained that replies keep returning to it. "Blue states are bubbles, go live in the HeartlandTM!" My MA hometown is a solid red bastion of evangelicals and trad Catholics bonded by their shared racism. These guys could have just taken any exit on the way to their Cape house.

There are markers along the route, which is unrelated to Route 93. I suspect they are only marking Dunks that are on that marked route itself, not any that are just off it by a block or whatever. The route does go under 93 in Sullivan Square heading into East Somerville, but that's it.
