Another reason not to scalp all grassy areas during the summer 🦋

From drought to this. If only we could rely on the water companies to capture and store it properly ahead of the next drought.

This is either ridiculously uninformed journalism or outright pandering to fossil fuel lobbyists. Either way @telegraph.co.uk should be ashamed. Large parts of Europe are literally on fire. People are dying. Renewables are cheaper. Significant action on #ClimateChange is necessary and inevitable.
Picture of a headline from The Telegraph for an opinion piece by Allister Heath, which says “We’ve lost the war against climate change. Time to scrap net zero”.
“Net Zero” is a term used to describe the aim of ensuring we do not cause more greenhouse gas emissions than we can remove from the atmosphere, with the aim of limiting future climate change. The term has become widely politicised, particularly by those with vested interests in the fossil fuel industries. Without significant action to reduce emissions, scientific predictions of future climate change impacts range from the scary to the apocalyptic (see https://www.ipcc.ch/). Many people are sadly uninformed or misinformed about these predictions and the science behind them. Others deliberately propagate misinformation for their own personal and political interests.

Clouds of insects above the wildflower meadows at RSPB Bempton last night. Lots of Seven-spot Ladybirds and other wee beetles that seemed newly arrived from the continent, as well as flying ants. Happy Swallows.

Fires in the fields down the road here this evening. Still so many local commenters insisting there’s no link with the weather or climate change. We’re really approaching the reality of this meme.
Cartoon of a dog smiling and saying “this is fine” while the house around him burns. A meme commonly used to represent complacency and inaction around climate change.

Grass cut ridiculously short for no reason now baked dry by the heatwave. Could have been an easy win: an oasis of food and habitat for declining insects, retaining water in heat and floods. Instead representative of widespread failure to adapt to the climate and biodiversity crises.
An area of grass cut ridiculously short in the name of tidiness, baked dry and brown by the heatwave. If it had been left long, it would have retained water and stayed green as well as providing food and habitat for our declining insect populations. Not cutting it so short so regularly would also save money and emissions. Missed opportunity.

I’m a gardener who delights in having my plants eaten by ‘bugs’: here are 2 Large Rose Sawflies (Arge pagana) sawing a rose to lay eggs and a Mullein moth (Cucullia verbasci) caterpillar on a mullein plant. All are welcome! 🙂 #ifyouplantittheywillcome

Oh no! I didn’t actually know it was still active - I haven’t used it since last autumn I don’t think, so how I can have behaved inauthentically I’m not sure, but I also don’t care 🙂

I was lucky enough to witness these Pardosa wolf spiders yesterday, engaged in a very cautious and lengthy courtship dance. They both ultimately disappeared into the grass, so I’ll never know the outcome. But I’m told the females very rarely eat the males, so🤞🕷️

I’ve been seeing a lot of ‘wtf is this?’ posts about Bee Flies on social media the last week, so I was delighted to finally see at least 3 in the garden today. Bombylius major. Amazing picture, I know 🙂

Please think twice about encouraging this kind of thing if you see it. Birds of prey do not like to be handled by strangers. They do not like to be stroked, and this is actually bad for their feathers. Owls should not be tethered. Note the obvious stress caused by the presence of dogs. 1/

I was given an unsolicited front row seat to these Woodpigeon shenanigans the other day. First he feeds her with crop milk and obtains permission - like yours. They both seemed pretty pleased with themselves afterwards.

Front row seat for a Woodpigeon courtship ritual (“sans gêne”, as they say): he feeds her with crop milk at her request , before proceeding with full consent. Both are very pleased with themselves afterwards.

Whiter than white - true feather treasure from the garden today: Woodcock tail feathers. The white tips on the underside are the brightest white ever recorded in a feather. I suspect the poor Woodcock came to a sad end though.
