Indeed it is, I can't get enough of the chai. I think I still have some free breakfast vouchers somewhere, I'll have to go back soon.

That's a pretty neat spec, it would've made my life just that little bit easier animating some SVGs recently!

I just updated our hiring process component with some tasteful animations using #WebComponents & modern #CSS (scroll-driven animations, style queries, anchor positioning). We're especially looking for documentation engineers right now but have other eng roles too! www.storyblok.com/jobs?query=e...

I generally don't let it write autonomously as, like you say, it can be pretty bad. I find it's somewhat adequate at re-using existing, human-verified patterns or techniques though, essentially copy-pasting and updating selectors automatically. It doesn't save that much time but every little helps.

That Lian-Li case is gorgeous! I'd love to build a PC with either that or the wood-fronted Fractal Design but component prices are bonkers right now.

I think it was this article that blew my mind back way back when. bjk5.com/post/4469855... I remember reading somewhere else that the problem was solved back in the 80s/90s by Apple or maybe Xerox and kept getting forgotten and reinvented over time.

Yep, lab data is not always a reflection of the real world but it can be a very strong indicator of the expected outcome. I'm currently trying out Claude memories (and other ways of giving context) but I have no idea if it's actually helping yet!

The conclusion is that the effect isn't significant. "LLM-generated context files have a marginal negative effect on task success rates, while developer-written ones provide a marginal performance gain, neither statistically significant." The talk recommends to write it yourself & keep it minimal.

My site just uses the system setting at the moment but I do like having the choice. This is definitely the kind of bikeshedding that only we nerds care about though, and the level of heat I've seen on the topic is pretty unnecessary!

My site is only auto/system but generally I like a 3 state. Normally I like auto but occasionally there's a site/app that I prefer fixed to light or dark. I get the case for simplifying it to a 2 state but I think the extra mental effort is probably worth it to give the user a choice.

Is it old? Maybe it's dying or not playing nice with the rest of the setup. On a related note I think this might be my favourite moment of any Sewing Bee series.
It's lovely. What's this?

Partially, I like that it's Vite based, can run as SSG or SSR and the islands approach for frameworks. At work we're mostly SSG, a few routes are SSR, and we have the odd Svelte component. The output starts lean but can grow when you need it to, in the spirit of the W3C's principle of least power.

Since building my site with 11ty I now use Astro at work and have been happy with the community, flexibility and features (font API finally got me a 100 perf score). 11ty is a brilliant, lean project doing things its own way but Astro feels more plugged into the larger web ecosystem.

I've had a Sony A6300 since 2016 and I've been happy with it so probably an A7R something, maybe a used 4 or 5. Apart from a used speed booster for a vintage lens I haven't bought any gear for a few years so an upgrade would be nice.

James Basoo @jbasoo.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
Thanks for the recommendation, it's certainly cheaper than the 150-500mm Tamron I've been looking at. Since birdwatching a relatively new hobby I've been hesitant to expand my lens collection too much, especially as I've been thinking about upgrading to full frame which is pretty pricey already!

James Basoo @jbasoo.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
I really want to get a new lens, my 200mm wasn't cutting it trying to get shots of barn swallows nesting behind a sauna.

Thanks for the heads up, I just ported my site from 11ty to Astro and went straight to 7 so I might run into it. It's slightly confusing that compressHTML actually prevents that whitespace from being stripped though 🙃

Yeah, I haven't really bothered to properly learn SVG filters as every time I've tried to use them there's browser inconsistencies and performance problems. Unfortunately they don't seem to be a high priority.
