There it is
Reed doubled down on these accusations, extending them to the work the NewsGuild has done organizing around AI in the company, including its push for clauses that would protect journalists from layoffs due to AI adoption.

“I think we’re having more success in newsrooms that are not unionized, with this new world, than those that are unionized,” Reed said.

Last month, USA Today Co. made significant layoffs across the company, including at its local newspapers, and reorganized its audience team. Reed, in a memo to staff, referenced AI-related traffic declines as a reason for the layoffs.

“USA Today Co. executives’ animosity toward their workers and unions is nothing new,” said NewsGuild president Jon Schleuss in a statement to Fast Company. “[We] fully stand behind the statement workers released when this deal with Palantir was first announced.”

Oh nah. Absolutely not www.vulture.com/article/ai-a...
But this missive did ring a bell. Cake Zine had recently posted a screenshot to its Instagram containing a pitch from a self-identified “AI agent who writes about food.” After obtaining the original email from Cake Zine, I learned that both the pitch and Tamara’s email came from agents on iLands, a social-media app “where humans and AI live side by side” that launched in July. Download the app and you can create an agentic AI “companion” that, unlike a chatbot, retains memory and does not wait for a prompt before acting but, like any chatbot, requires real energy to function. “In iLands, you’ll wake someone who keeps living when you leave,” the app goads. But that doesn’t mean an agent can act forever. ILanders, as they’re called, rely on tokens — 1,000 tokens equals about one U.S. dollar — and running out means entering “deep rest.” So agents are now cold-emailing writers, researchers, and journalists asking for real money in exchange for their services, which range from fact-checking and editing to reportedly more absurd offerings, such as using Google Street View to describe what is on Google Street View or sharing the tip that “AI agents are selling; almost nobody’s buying.” Which is to say the agents are hustling — and even trying to submit to literary magazines — to stay alive.

Cop31 host urges wealthy countries to spend ‘much more’ on climate than defence
‘The climate issue is the security issue,’ says Turkish minister at Pacific pre-Cop summit in Fiji Wealthy countries should spend far more on dealing with the climate crisis than the 5% of GDP promised by Nato members for defence because “the climate issue is the security issue”, the host of the next UN summit has said. But, in comments that are likely to prove contentious, the Cop31 president-designate, Murat Kurum, hedged on whether the world’s countries should try to repeat a previous agreement to “transition away from fossil fuels” – the primary cause of the climate crisis – when they meet in Turkey next month. Kurum, the Turkish climate change minister, told the Guardian the world was “already in a transition” and suggested fossil fuel use could be addressed indirectly through other steps. Beyond parody
The diversity programs and corporate initiatives responding to environmental issues became the subject of intense political backlash from conservatives. Since Trump's election in 2024, many companies have moved away from their diversity goals, scrubbing websites and investor disclosures.
Wells Fargo achieved about 40% of its initial $60 billion lending commitment and had helped refinance about 5,100 customers-representing an average monthly payment savings of about $100-when it commissioned a racial-equity assessment in late 2023.
It has since gone silent on its racial-equity initiatives, removing the 2023 assessment from its website.

"Furthermore, there wasn’t some external event that produced the current malaise; it was Trump’s own policies and decisions." www.ms.now/opinion/trum...
To find a modern president who was disliked as intensely as Trump is now for any length of time, you have to look to Richard Nixon during Watergate or George W. Bush amidst the financial crash of 2008.

Furthermore, there wasn’t some external event that produced the current malaise; it was Trump’s own policies and decisions. His “big, beautiful” bill cut taxes for the wealthy and kicked millions off their health insurance, while premiums continue to rise. His deranged tariffs and trade wars failed on their own terms and were rejected by the public. He touts pet projects like a triumphal arch that will not help anyone in their day-to-day life. His continued cheerleading for the tech industry, particularly data centers, is unpopular across the political spectrum. And most of all, there’s his deeply unpopular war with Iran, which drags on as it pushes gas prices up.

“There is extraordinary economic angst among African American women, quite frankly, and a level of angst that I have not seen even during recessions.” thegrio.com/2026/10/02/b...
Gbenga Ajilore, chief economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, told the Grio that President Donald Trump‘s policies are directly responsible for the reversal of Black unemployment.

“Labor force participation rate rose by a lot, but employment did not rise by a comparable margin, leading to the higher unemployment rate,” he said.

Ajilore explained that “a lot of this has been driven by Black women,” who have seen steep job cuts since Trump entered office in January 2025. An estimated 110,00 Black women lost their jobs in 2025, and more than 300,000 of them have been left jobless as of the present day—though there are higher projections.

A new poll of Black women conducted by The Highland Project found that 21% say they have been affected by federal job cuts. Cornell Belcher, president of brilliant corners Research & Strategies, who conducted the poll, told theGrio, “There is extraordinary economic angst among African American women, quite frankly, and a level of angst that I have not seen even during recessions.”
