Last week, Pete Hegseth delivered a “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico. He said he’d transformed the military by enforcing the idea of “[n]o fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals. Just warriors. … The ideological clowns are out.” Not all of them!

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The best Ozempic for the economy is deporting illegal immigrants out of this country.” Former DJT staffer Caroline Sunshine on CNN about immigration. The economy is “like a fat person.” Mass deportations are actually costing Americans jobs, according to a study by The NY Times.

It’s a bad year for US farmers. DJT’s trade wars were already taking a toll, but the Iran war compounded problems by raising fuel and fertilizer costs. DJT won 69% of rural voters during his last campaign. Now, 57% of those same voters “disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy.”

Borowitz Report: In an embarrassing attempt at a “gotcha” moment in Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Senator Eric Schmitt appeared to confuse his ass with a hole in the ground. The mix-up overshadowed an earlier goof by committee chairman, Chuck Grassley, who seemingly mistook shit for Shinola.

Poll watch: Fewer than a third (28%) of self-identified MAGA voters think goods have become less affordable since DJT took office, according to a Politico survey of 2,004 U.S. adults. This is less than half of all respondents, 59% of whom think prices have become less affordable.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The criticism has been that I led a child predator out after one day. Well, guess what? They served 60 days.” Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, during a forum at the US Hispanic Business Council, about Adam Hoffman, a former Waco defense attorney.

Poll watch: About half (45%-50%) of those surveyed in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, the UK and the US want to pause AI development to prevent further risks, per a Politico poll of 2,000 adults in each country. Between 18% and 24% also think there’s a “significant risk” AI could destroy humanity.

Strength in Numbers reported last week that only 24% of American adults say the US is better off under DJT than it had been under Biden. 58% say it’s worse off, and most of them say it’s much worse. And in the last month, his approval rating fell the most among voters who identified as Republicans.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “We have the best, I guess you could say, poverty. We have the best poverty numbers ever in the history of our country.” DJT on the US’s current poverty rate. This doesn’t include the federal cuts by the White House that will go into effect this year and likely increase poverty.

Last week DJT asked Chinese President Xi Jinping if Beijing would “like to buy some” U.S. arms “at some point,” US Ambassador to China David Perdue said on Fox News. US law prohibits arms sales to China and the US is also bound by its own laws to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

A recent NYT/Siena poll showed that 69% of the American people disapprove of DJT’s handling of the war in Iran—59% of them strongly—and only 27% approve (15% strongly). And yet last week the WSJ reported that DJT has told aides he is planning to start bombing Iran again after the midterm elections.

Last week, DJT hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state dinner at the White House. Xi’s visit “came 6 weeks ahead of the midterm elections in which DJT has branded Democrats as communists,” the WSJ said. Several GOP senators said they weren’t sure what the party would gain from hosting him.

With the midterm elections just a month away, Republicans are running hard—many of them away from DJT. The shift is an indication of what information GOP candidates are receiving privately about the president’s unpopularity and its drag on them, but not because it’s the right thing to do.

Statistic of the day - 742: The average credit score of Americans who got a mortgage in 2024 — a record high and 29 points above the average credit score in the U.S., according to a Pew Charitable Trusts report. It has become “too hard to get a mortgage,” said The Washington Post.

Krugman: There’s a strong whiff of desperation coming off the Republican Party these days, and it smells a lot like diesel fumes. All indications are the GOP is headed for a huge defeat in the midterms, and soaring prices of fuel — especially diesel — are a big factor in the party’s dim prospects.

Borowitz Report: The estate of Adolf Hitler sued DJT for what it called the “blatant theft” of the late German chancellor’s design for an arch of triumph in Berlin. The lawyers alleged, “DJT’s entire presidency has crossed the line from homage to outright plagiarism of Mr. Hitler’s Third Reich™.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I am the code.” DJT to James McCrery, a former architect on the White House ballroom project, in response to the latter’s concerns that some design features violate building safety codes, including inadequate emergency exit routes, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Most reporting on DJT’s recent U.N. speech emphasized either his belligerence or the fact that almost everything he said was a lie. But isn’t the bigger story the fact that the leader of what used to be the world’s most powerful nation has clearly and undeniably lost his mind?

A Venezuelan DoorDash driver shot in the back of the neck by an ICE officer in Austin last week told reporters that the bullet was still lodged near his spine and he hadn’t “received the medical attention that I require” while being held at a detention center in south Texas. Disgusting!

Last Saturday, DJT barred reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House, following up on his post a day earlier warning he was “banning” the 3 outlets “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” DJT clearly isn’t interested in playing by traditional 1st Amendment rules.

United Nations investigators last week reported they had found “reasonable grounds” to believe the U.S. committed war crimes in Iran with its “indiscriminate” attacks on an elementary school and sports center, killing at least 178 civilians, mostly children. The US is experiencing its worst measles outbreak since 1991, “driven largely by unvaccinated people.” About 3,300 cases have been confirmed this year, and the “7 reported measles-associated deaths in the last 2 years” are “more than the combined total” over the “previous 3 decades,” The AP said.

Paul Krugman: Even a massive blue wave in November won’t end DJT’s ability to do immense damage to the nation and world — damage that he may well do out of sheer spite. He is, after all, exactly the kind of person who will feel, not that he failed America, but that America failed him.

Polls show people don’t expect the $5,000 election bribe checks to materialize, said Axios. 61% of likely voters doubt DJT will keep his pledge and think it’s unclear “whether Republicans have the will to make” the checks a “reality.” This looks like a “publicity stunt,” said one voter to Fox News.

A new report from the Congressional Budget Office said the Iran war, which has taken 18 U.S. lives and wounded more than 800 servicemembers, has also cost the US about $38 billion as of August 1 and could cost as much as $2 billion a month while it goes on, and it will continue to drive inflation.

Statistic of the day - $2.8 billion: The cost of the arms deal DJT’s administration has signed off on with Israel, including 40,000 one-ton bombs. Borowitz Report: DJT told reporters that AI “is much less likely to destroy humanity than I am. In just 2 years, I tore down the East Wing, turned the Reflecting Pool green, put the Kennedy Center out of business, blew up the Middle East, and put Pete Hegseth in charge of the military.”

The board of the Kennedy Center, chaired by DJT himself and stacked with allies he appointed, voted last week to close most of the performing arts center for renovation. But DJT immediately threatened to block that work unless his name is restored to the building. Truly a 5 year old’s behavior!

Last week, DJT blamed the global diesel shortage on Ukraine’s strikes in Russia. He’s ignoring a far more obvious cause: the war he started. At least DJT is consistent - it’s never ever his fault!

Poll watch: Americans’ satisfaction with K-12 education has dropped to 32% — the lowest in nearly 3 decades and down 11% over the past two years, according to a Gallup survey of 1,200 U.S. adults. And 47% of those polled give K-12 schools a “poor” rating for preparing students to think critically.

Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the wedding of DJT Jr. and Bettina Anderson in May. Kremlev attended the wedding along with a large group of Russians. Can you imagine GOP outrage if that had been Hunter Biden?

A YouGov poll showed only 24% of Americans think the construction of AI data centers is a good thing, while 47% say it’s bad. 61% of Americans don’t want one in their town. So of course, DJT is seeking to exempt data centers from having to notify anyone about how much air pollution will be released.
