JB @jb.caustic.org · 30/06/2026I am, always, skeptical of claims when it comes to tech. So, it’s no real surprise that I’m here. 110
JB @jb.caustic.org · 10/01/2026I like this graph. The U.S. lost its ability to build and deliver. 000
JB @jb.caustic.org · 06/12/2025I love Berlin’s Museum Für Naturkunde. The lighting is rather dramatic. @mfnberlin.bsky.social remains a favorite. Now, if they’d just get another season of “Süses Oder Saurier” going. 030
JB @jb.caustic.org · 06/12/2025Short stop at Potsdam, and there‘s a Christmas Market with heavy pours of rum and a Ferris Wheel. 050
JB @jb.caustic.org · 23/11/2025It’s never really a bad time to enjoy a bit of snow in Germany. It’s just rare in Cologne. 140
JB @jb.caustic.org · 30/10/2025For no reason at all, here’s a street of Stumbling Stones of people who were removed from their homes and deported to camps outside of their country, often by force. After having their citizenship revoked. 082
JB @jb.caustic.org · 27/09/2025Important design work is figuring out how to build a birthday piñata shaped like a dragon, and assembling the materials list. 140
JB @jb.caustic.org · 14/08/2025Gotta say, that was my favorite show the year. Of course, it was also my second show of the year. I really should get out more. Thanks @ministryband.bsky.social and Uncle Al. 030
JB @jb.caustic.org · 13/08/2025For this silly trip, I brought along a segment of line and one evening, opted to tie a bottle sling around the neck. Not the best knot, sucks for cylinders, but useful in that it can be tied around most water bottles in Europe. Particularly useful is that it tightens from the “handle” loops. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 10/08/2025My favorite video of the day. 9 seconds of a cloud chamber. Each streak, little burst, movement, is some charged particle kicking off or stealing electrons and causing the alcohol to condense, making small clouds. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 08/08/2025While I prefer some clarity on their other stances, The Party (or The Faction) and I are on the same level here. 110
JB @jb.caustic.org · 05/08/2025Related to my eReader purchase. What sits in the English language section of a German bookstore? 040
JB @jb.caustic.org · 19/07/2025An example of the handwritten form, late 19th century and early 20th. heritage.generali.com/wp-content/u... 000
JB @jb.caustic.org · 19/07/2025So, if you know Cyrillic type (Russian, Ukrainian, and others), there’s a cursive (hand scribe…) of the type you’re familiar with. It’s a bit like that. Easy confusion of f, s, b, h, and so on. st4.depositphotos.com/2485347/2781... 100
JB @jb.caustic.org · 08/07/2025My other go to is a first generation GoRuck GR1. Less decorated, but also heavily used. It‘s been used to commute, carried 20kg of bricks for an endurance event, and also traveled to multiple countries. It’s the bag that made me appreciate the Molle system. 040
JB @jb.caustic.org · 08/07/2025And I swear to god, I’ll get an industrial sewing machine and revive that old school messenger bag design. After I troll r/MYOG a bit. 4/fin 120
JB @jb.caustic.org · 06/07/2025We all have an emotional support dead famous person, and who they are says a lot about you. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 03/06/2025It’s a small thing, but I’m amused at the sprouting mango seed. I know it won’t fruit. And it may not survive the summer. But, the improvised covering is helping it succeed. 040
JB @jb.caustic.org · 27/05/2025This gnome looks shockingly like my uncle. I’m wondering if he had a previous career as a model. 030
JB @jb.caustic.org · 26/04/2025Something something something immigrants and their tasty drinks and foods. 040
JB @jb.caustic.org · 11/02/2025The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster, remains as relevant now as it did when published in 1961. It’s one of my favorite books. And I’d forgotten this appreciation. 000
JB @jb.caustic.org · 02/02/2025Today’s listening. David Bowie, “I’m Afraid of Americans”. youtu.be/LT3cERVRoQo 110
JB @jb.caustic.org · 09/01/2025It’s snowing enough that the winter wonderland from last night has been restored, covering up the slush and grey snow. It won’t last. Never does in Cologne. 020
JB @jb.caustic.org · 28/12/2024Paperfolding, just playing with a scrap from making a square sheet from A4. 030
JB @jb.caustic.org · 12/12/2024A bit over 25 years ago SGI had an employee Webserver with various personal sites. Between instructions for surgical tubing catapults and fixing IRIX weirdness notes, there was a small section on paper folding. Not exactly origami, using standard typewriter paper, the example that stuck is this 150
JB @jb.caustic.org · 08/12/2024By the way, this is the SIM. It’s seriously confusing to have to steer a bike like a car. 020
JB @jb.caustic.org · 08/12/2024Also, tell me you’re focused on a U.S. audience without telling me the audience is U.S. 000

JB @jb.caustic.org · 13/10/2024I picked up a kid’s “field microscope” a while back, and it’s been super remarkable in the magnification for something so cheap. 000
JB @jb.caustic.org · 05/12/2023At a small farmer’s market in Wiener Platz in Cologne, payed 3€ for a stuffed bread thing with potatoes and onion. Then watched the cook take dough from a fermentation vat. Roll it to a ball. Roll it flat and thin with a dowel. Fill it. Add a little more. Cook it on the griddle. Amazing. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 04/11/2023I generally blame “Hackers” (1995), but I loved seeing internals of machines well before then as well. www.framerated.co.uk/frwpcontent/... 050
JB @jb.caustic.org · 13/10/2023I visited Gelsenkirchen and the graveyard where my mother’s buried. It’s my first time here since her funeral in ‘83, or her mother’s funeral later that year. Anyway vague memories associated with the place and some long forgotten sadness lingers. Her grave was dug up, plot released years ago. 000
JB @jb.caustic.org · 03/10/2023As an aside, since arriving in an area with exceptional public transportation, and easy access to green spaces, my average steps went up. A bunch. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 18/09/2023Fuck. I’ve written the word Nazi too much today. A reminder why it’s okay to punch Nazis. This is across the river from where I live right now. A family of 4, 1 survivor. Freed in 1946. 010
JB @jb.caustic.org · 18/09/2023Two of my favorite things, Al Pastor from Mexico, and Döner from Turkey, basically define my love of grilled meats. The fusion of Döner with French fries, tzatziki, and a soicey sauce is basically perfection in hand for lunch. 010
