Throwback to, in preparation for my mother's wedding, I got my hair cut by my stepdad's barber Roscoe. Roscoe wasn't super familiar with cutting hair for white people, so when I told him I wanted my hair cut "short" I got a buzz cut.

11 years ago, I offered to teach a girl in my English class how to drive a manual. After driving around in the abandoned Metro North Mall parking lot, we went to Jimmy Johns in North Kansas City. Today's our 7th wedding anniversary and we went to the same Jimmy Johns

There's a white squirrel that lives down the street from me. I've been trying to get a photo of it for months. It's been my white whale. I finally got a photo of it today.

This game of "leap frog" between development and annexation led to inconsistent standards applied to those developments. One example of this is that many of those neighborhoods developed prior to annexations lack basic infrastructure such as sidewalks.

In the 1950s and 60s, the city of Kansas City, MO rapidly expanded its borders. Due to the timing of those expansions, many inner-ring KC suburbs were mostly developed prior to being annexed by the city. Later expansions were developed under City jurisdiction.

In my neighborhood, one road has been leaky for years. In 2023, a geyser appeared in the middle of the street. Leaks still reoccur constantly and the water dept just patches the one spot instead of replacing the entire line.

I walked to the old Brookwood School Lot right across from the KC North Community center. Was able to get there thanks to the new sidewalks on Russell Rd.

An empty lot at Antioch and Russell Rd. A 6-room neighborhood school named Brookwood School used to be here. I believe it was there from the 1920s-50s. Was vacant until the 80s and torn down and sold to KCMO parks. All that remains is the retaining walls and an unmaintained baseball field.

Domestic Assault is the 10th most common charge for KC's jail population, with only 6% of detainees having been charged or sentenced with Domestic Assault. With an average jail population of 85, that works out to be about 5 people at a given time.

Jaz Hays @jazhays.com · 27/03/2025
The only charges prosecuted on a city level that could be considered "violent" are Assault and Domestic Assault. On the average day in 2025, only 38% of Kansas City's jail population had one of those charges.

Some City leaders like Councilman Crispin Rea and Mayor Quinton Lucas have claimed that around 65% of people we currently detain are in for "violent" charges, and specifically citing domestic violence as a major contributor. But is that true? No one has mentioned where these numbers came from.

On April 8th, KCMO votes on whether to renew a 1/4¢ sales tax to build a City Jail. KC already incarcerates people, but City leaders have not provided clear and accurate information about the charges contributing to our current jail population. I worked on a project to collect that info. 🧵
