Bakker: Personal Toll More Than We Can Bear
Transcript of Jim Bakker's statement
Thursday:
Thank you. As you know, for many years Tammy Faye and I and our ministries have been subjected to constant harassment and pressures by various groups and forces whose objective has been to undermine and to destroy us. I cannot deny that the personal toll that these pressures have exerted on me and my wife and family have been more than we can bear.
In fact, as our friends are all too well aware, my and Tammy's physical and emotional resources have been so overwhelmed that we are presently under full-time therapy at a treatment center in Cali-fornia. We want to express our gratitude for the support and encouragement we've received from so many of our friends and partners.
I have decided that for the good of my family, the church and of all of our related ministries that I should resign and step down immediately from PTL.
I have also today resigned from the Assemblies of God. I am not able to muster the resources needed to combat a new wave of attack that I have learned is about to be launched against us by The Charlotte Observer, which has attacked us incessantly for the past 12 years.
I am appalled at the baseness of this present campaign to defame and vilify me.
I categorically deny that I've ever sexually assaulted or harassed anyone.
I sorrowfully acknowledge that seven years ago, in an isolated incident, I was wickedly manipulated by treacherous former friends and then colleagues who victimized me with the aid of a female confed-erate.
They conspired to betray me into a sexual encounter at a time of great stress in my marital life. Vulnerable as I was at the time, I was set up as part of a scheme to co-opt me and obtain some advantage for themselves over me in connection with their hope for position in the ministry.
I have sought and gratefully received the loving forgiveness of our Savior who forgives us of our sins. I have told Tammy everything and Tammy, of course, has forgiven me, and our love for each other is greater and stronger than it has ever been.
Now, seven years later, this one-time mistake is seized upon by my enemies to humiliate and degrade me to gratify their envious and selfish motives.
They have falsified, distorted and exaggerated the facts so as to make the occurrence appear many times worse than it ever was. Anyone who knows Jim Bakker knows that I never physically assaulted anyone in my life.
In retrospect it was poor judgment to have succumbed to blackmail. But when extortionist overtures were made I was concerned to protect and spare the ministry and my family. Unfortunately, money was paid in order to avoid further suffering or hurt to anyone to appease these persons who were determined to destroy this ministry now, in hindsight, realize payment should have been resisted and we ought to have exposed the blackmailers to the penalties of the law. I'm truly sorry for all this that has happened in the past or any harm that may have occurred
I bear no malice to anyone. I forgive those who have borne false witness against me.
I cannot undo the past, but must now address the future. I have no doubt God has a redemptive plan for PTL and for Jim and Tammy. I fervently pray for the future of PTL and Heritage USA. It is my life to pre-serve, to protect those cherished values which it embodies.
I've asked my friend, Jerry Falwell, to help me in my crisis. The PTL Board of Directors has accepted my resignation, appointed Jerry Falwell as chairman of our board of directors requesting him to designate a new board of directors. He has done this and the old board has accordingly re-signed.
I asked the prayerful support of our friends and foes for the preservation and advancement of God's work and the future of PTL.
God bless you and goodbye.

Review: A big pile of shed from Costco jaythurber.com/2026/09/17/do-it-you…
jaythurber.com
Do-it-yourself corner: A pile of shed
If you follow me on social media, you know that over the past few weekends I’ve been building a new garden shed in the back yard. We already had a shed, but it’s full, and we also still have a lot of stuff in the garage that would be handier outside. In the interest of public service, here’s what I’ve learned. For the record, the kit is a 9-by-12.5 feet “Lifetime” brand shed from Costco. The instructions leave a lot to be desired, and the instructional videos really are misleading. They show two people snapping these sheds together like Lego bricks, and it’s a lot more complicated than that. You absolutely need a perfectly level, square platform. I built a “skid” platform on concrete blocks, which themselves are sitting on gravel and sand beds. If you try to put one of these sheds on uneven ground, it is never going to go together, and you are going to be in a world of hurt. Even a concrete patio might not be level enough. I mean flat and level. If you use wood, don’t go cheap. Get pressure-treated wood rated for ground contact, and try not to get those warped and bowed boards they sell at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Order them from a real lumberyard, if possible. There was a lot of fiddling necessary to get the parts to fit; the walls are held to the base by giant snap-tabs. (Remember building a “snap-fit” plastic model kit as a kid? Same idea.) The plastic has almost no “give” or flexibility; it’s the same type of resin that heavy-duty children’s toys are made from. Some people suggested using a heat gun to warm up the tabs enough to slide them together. I used a big hammer, a wood block and a lot of swearing. The last time I built a shed like this, it was a metal kit from Sears, Roebuck — so it’s obviously been a hot minute. I recall the assembly being much easier than this plastic kit, although I may be misremembering. Based on Google street view, that shed is still in the yard of our old house 11 years later, though looking a little worse for wear. With the Lifetime kit, most of the parts are held together with self-tapping sheet metal screws. Those screws are barely sufficient to hold the pieces together and it’s very easy to strip out the holes. Also, some of the holes aren’t drilled through properly, and that wasn’t the only quality control boo-boo I noticed; a bag of washers was supplied with the kit, and some of them didn’t have holes punched in them. On others, the screws wouldn’t fit through the washers. I ended up going to the hardware store and buying a bag of zinc-plated screws with built-in neoprene washers to keep moisture out. Speaking of moisture: After the first heavy rainfall, the shed leaked, mostly around the thin plastic “skylights” in the roof. Those skylights are an odd design choice; otherwise, the roof is a fairly clever design in which the rafters double as rain gutters. The skylights are flimsy and almost guaranteed to let rain in; and they don’t provide much light to the interior anyway. The front doors are another clever design; they come with a neat little latching mechanism and the hinges are built right into the structure of the shed itself, to make it harder for them to jimmy open or come loose. Unfortunately, poor quality control also let the doors down; the metal rods holding the doors to the structure wouldn’t fit until I shaved them just a little bit with an angle grinder. Similarly, the metal edges of the doors — where the padlock hasp needs to be installed — were just a smidge too tight. They needed copious coaxing with some silicone lube, a mallet, a pry bar and a lot of profanity. And the instructions, once again, are not terrible clear; if you carefully follow the diagram in the instruction manual, you will be installing one of the door edges upside down, and you will have to spend a lot of time removing and reinstalling it. (Ask me how I know.) Our old shed in the background. They now call me Jay “Two-Sheds” Thurber So you pays your money, you takes your chance. I think we paid around $1,500 for the kit, delivered; plus I paid another $500 or so for the lumber, concrete blocks, gravel and assorted other hardware, and $9 for a bottle of Advil. For another thousand dollars, we might have gotten a pre-built wooden shed delivered. I’m not 100 percent sure the savings was worth it. Although it’s done, I’m not putting anything into it until I can waterproof it (I’m going to caulk all of the seams) and possibly reinforce the walls with an internal wooden frame. Overall the shed feels sturdy, but the walls flex easily and I could see them buckling if someone accidentally leans on the shed, or if a tree branch strikes it during a heavy storm. If I recall correctly, the manufacturer claims you can hang objects weighing up to 30 pounds on the walls as designed; I think they’re dreaming. The flimsy plastic hooks provided in the kit will never support 30 pounds, and even if they could, the load would pull the walls apart. **My review:** You get what you pay for, and this entire kit definitely feels like it was built to a price point to be sold at Costco — much like their hotdogs. Hopefully this review helps someone else who’s considering buying one of these shed kits. ### Share this: * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * ### Like this: Like Loading… ### _Related_

Unfortunately, this article aged very well: "The ultimate impact on the American psyche is going to be profound and will manifest itself in the political system and the way we live our lives. This is not a passing or small event." Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News, Sept. 12, 2001
BY MILES BENSON AND DELIA RIOS OF OUR WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - As American leadership at every level moves to cope with the immediate crisis of mounting death and destruction from the disasters at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, an important question will arise:
Can national security and civil liberty co-exist?

This issue will be at the forefront, testing President Bush and his administration as they lead a frightened and angry country.

In pursuit of security, experts believe demands will be heard for more intrusive use of wiretaps, searches, detainment and "profiling" techniques to seek out possible terrorists. These could turn on skin color and national origin or ethnicity, and fall particularly hard on Arab Americans and Muslims.

"We will now see ourselves as a battlefield as never before and our sense of privilege, protection and isolation is forever destroyed." said Henry Aaron, a senior fellow and public policy specialist at the Brookings Institution.

"The ultimate impact... on the American psyche... is going to be profound and will manifest itself in the political system and the way we live our lives. This is not a passing or small event."

In times of national distress, the American public and Congress rally behind the president, who is central to establishing control, reassuring the nation and leading it out of tragedy.

Now it's Bush's turn.

"This is his opportunity to really assume the mantle of the presidency," said Fred I. Greenstein, chair of the Program in Leadership Studies at Princeton University.

As the search begins for perpetrators of yesterday's calamity, historian David M. Kennedy sees a major danger that American ideals of freedom might be undermined and swept away in a storm of anger, a rush for vengeance, a demand for protection against future attacks.

The continuing threat is not to "security interests in the usual sense of the term" but to "maintaining civil liberties and an open society and not becoming obsessively paranoid about internal threats," said Kennedy, a Stanford University historian who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book, "Freedom From Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929-45."

At this moment, the nation inevitably looks to the president for assurance that the guilty will be punished, that things will return to normal.

"He has to interpret the events for people. identify the cause, and explain the significance for the country," David Hart, an associate professor of public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. "Does it mean we have to change our daily lives? Change our transportation or communication system in ways that affects us on a daily basis?" In times of great crisis, the president has great powers, not all of them spelled out in the Constitution. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus, allowing Union troops to arrest and imprison individuals without formally charging them.

In this crisis, consequences will be run short term and long term, said Stephen Wermiel, a law professor at American University.

"The short-term question is the degree that law enforcement will try to get around the limitations that have existed on wiretapping, searches, stopping people at borders, detaining people at airports and ports of entry, profiling overtly on basis of skin color and national identity.

"I think we'll see that start to happen immediately," Wermiel said. "They will use powers without a lot of concern for what we thought were fairly clearly established civil liberties.

The notion of probable cause will be a lot easier to establish than it normally would be. I suspect that any Muslim group remotely suspected of sympathy with groups suspected of terrorism will become a target of wire taps and surveillance and maybe searches."

And the passions of an emotional public will support all that, Wermiel said

"But I hope we're not going to panic and forget about the tradition of protecting the rights of all Americans on which this country has been built."
