Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 13hBut by that same token, Alice can also foster a great community by removing/downranking posts featuring lizards (not puppies) or removing comment threads where people are saying hurtful off-topic things. The space is to talk about puppies, and Alice is doing a valuable service to make it enjoyable 000
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 13hIf Alice makes a community all about puppies and it's the number 1 top community on Bluesky, and she bans Bob because they had a messy breakup, there's no recourse for Bob to have discussions about puppies in the puppy community now, and the ban is permanent 100
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 13hThat said, I think any moderated community can very easily have the same issues Reddit has with power mods (especially in larger communities), CSAM, and communities that exist to centralize the spreading of mis/disinformation. It would need to be designed to counteract all of those 100
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 13hSo: 1. Reddit 2. Facebook 3. Private Accounts? I feel like 1 or 2 are fairly interchangable, it's how you skin it. Unless 1 does not have moderators, and 2 does? If that's the case, I _think_ I'd prefer 2? Really I think the biggest issue to solve is discoverability 100

Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 28/09/2026I could maybe see them paywalling permissioned data for "private accounts". But the people who want private accounts are probably going to be the angriest at having to pay for them. They've talked about a Patreon model in the past, but this doesn't seem like that (plus there's CC issues with NSFW) 010
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 28/09/2026Very curious what the value add could be. The easiest thing to do would be to inject ads, but then people could easily use Witchsky on Desktop or Heron on mobile. Feed generation/management directly competes with community products. Permissioned data seems too big of a feature to paywall? 110
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 28/09/2026This is also why Bluesky is missing things like private accounts. If Bluesky controlled who could see your data, then Bluesky could easily say "people who use Witchsky can't see this user" etc. But they purposely made it impossible to do that, which also makes it impossible to do private accounts 020

Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 28/09/2026Just dug through the archives to find a YouTube video of one of my old trips for timing reference. At the 1 minute mark I'm passing Ganesha so removing that single corner did indeed cut a full minute! 110
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 28/09/2026Interesting how removing that first curve in the 90s saved an entire minute on the trip! The original curve looks sharp enough that it'd probably have derailment issues. Today's SOP is "full throttle until Indy queue/Cambodian Shrine"; that doesn't track with that sharp curve and a 1 min marker 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff but that's the gist of a lot of the problems. It's certainly doable if you aren't in a big hurry but if you have concerts daily, you'd need to very explicitly plan your tour around it. But also maybe with enough money anything is possible 230
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026We also have issues like the fact that we don't have many grade-separated crossings like other countries do; we have level crossings. This means that there are a lot more deaths and accidents on the tracks, which require investigation and shutting down the tracks 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026Since your train is so big and so slow and doesn't fit on the passing siding, it can't pull over to let the Amtrak pass. Instead, the Amtrak has to pull over to let the big, slow, long freight train pass. Multiply this by all over the country (due to the freight oligopoly) and you see the problem 130
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026This is called Precision Scheduled Railroading. You run fewer trains to fewer places and charge people more. This saves money, but now your trains don't fit on passing sidings that were built 50-100 years ago. That's no big deal because you run fewer trains, but it's a problem for passenger trains 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026Why is it so much slower? Well, BY LAW, Amtrak has priority over freight traffic. IN PRACTICE, it does not. Nobody bothers enforcing the law. Additionally, freight railroads are trying to cut down on locomotives and staff to save money. The easiest way to do that is to run fewer, longer trains 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026By law, Amtrak has priority over all freight traffic, and should have no problem getting from place to place. In the 1950s, the California Zephyr went from Chicago to SF in ~930 minutes - one trip took 785 minutes! Surely we're faster now, with better locomotives? No. Today it takes 1,105 minutes. 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026The next problem is getting around. There are multiple ways you can do it: 1. Try to convince a freight railroad (BNSF, CSX, Union Pacific, etc.) to carry your car. They don't like this because of liability 2. Try to convince Amtrak to carry your car. Obviously Amtrak is carrying people anyway 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026But basically the first problem is you need to have the Federal Railroad Administration certify your private car, which is apparently a royal PITA. The FRA has rules that are constantly changing on you, but let's assume you bypass all that quickly/easily enough because billionaire 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 27/09/2026They're pretty nice but there's sadly a lot more rules that go alongside them than what you have with a private jet etc. (Yes of course I would be the person to know this information) I'm of course also ignoring the whole "it's expensive" part for obvious reasons, you gotta rent the track and stuff 130
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 26/09/2026Oh, those are the work lights! That's super interesting. I wonder if someone tripped or something and Disney did this to avoid liability 110

Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 26/09/2026The good news is that I went to Disneyland all the time during this period (and have strong memories of those walls). The bad news is that I was single-digit years old so I don't remember much, just like fuzzy images 110

Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 25/09/2026Sure is! If you need a loan for anything, that loan is gonna be high interest! And if you work somewhere that relies on loans to pay the bills, they're going to have a hard time getting good deals on loans too! So less expansion, less construction, fewer projects, fewer jobs 010
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 25/09/2026(this is a quick summary, it is complicated, there are many other factors such as inflation, the dollar's status or lack thereof as a reserve currency, yadda yadda yadda) but the short version of it is that this means things will be expensive and the economy will suck more 120
Jay Stevens @jaystevens.me · 25/09/2026The US needs to take out a loan and this is the interest rate that lenders are offering It is spiking because people don't think the US will be able to pay back the loans anymore, so they want higher interest 120
