Just south of Davenport, California (north of Santa Cruz, about 15 km or so?) I love these bluffs with all my heart.

Huge rolling waves sweep in off the northeast Pacific Ocean, breaking on the bluffs north of Santa Cruz, California. The sun is rising to the left of the picture and catches the crests of the waves in white-gold light. There’s a mist behind the headland that juts out into the middle of the picture. Extremely decorative. This one lost her vision about 1.5 years ago and since then has refused to go for any kind of walk, which is probably kind of fair.

#Birding with #MECFS in my case is mostly watching who comes to my deck feeder, water station and oak tree. Today a very wee pygmy nuthatch, newly fledged, came for a drink and a moment in the sun. They look v. fierce head-on, but really they were quite chill.

Pygmy nuthatch perches on the edge of the black drinking bowl on my deck. Their extra fluffy head and belly lead me to believe that they’re fresh out of the nest. They’re also a little tentative, not as assertive and agile as the older adults. The top of their head is light bluish gray, their throat is very pale reddish tan. Their belly is creamy white.

Their bill is sharp and pointy, slightly open after drinking water.

The background is out of focus foliage of a California live oak tree.

Pygmy nuthatch perches on my wooden deck railing. Fluffy head and belly lead me to believe that they’re fresh out of the nest. They are standing upright looking head on at the camera with their beak slightly open and their head slightly tilted to the left. Their black eye stripes give them a piratical air. Their legs are incredibly short and their tiny feet are curled underneath them.

I suspect it is hard for them to look threatening when their belly is so fuzzy and creamy white and their tiny head is so round and cocked so adorably. Still, they are doing a pretty good job. “ What’re YOU looking at?”

I feel like this squirrel has something on their mind…

A steel-gray squirrel crouches on the railing of a wooden deck, with the trunk of a large oak tree in the background. It looks to me (a totally uninformed lay person) as though it’s a female exhibiting lordosis in preparation for making bebbes. Her tail is fetchingly arched forward over her head, her belly is almost flat to the railing, and her pelvis is tilted into a position that looks pretty ready for mating. Also, she seems have quite a seductive look in her big dark eye. I waited to see if there was a male nearby, but after a few seconds of this pose, she jumped up, drank some water, and scampered off. So what do I know? Not much.

With a circle of black feathers at the base. Its eyes are a striking silver gray. It has a round red cap of feathers on the back of its head, but it’s not a crest like many woodpeckers have. Its upper chest is black but its belly is white, lightly streaked with black. It has gray scaly feet. We are seeing a side view of the bird, with its right eye looking at us and its head slightly tilted toward us.

In the background is the trunk and foliage of a California live oak tree.

Rough week in the Santa Cruz Mountains— we lost my dear friend and partner in musical crime, Erik Rozite. Most recently of the Dirt Rakers, but had fronted The Droolpigs, Acoustic Shadows, and other bands too. Playing a few tunes in his memory today at Discretion Brewing in Soquel.

It’s “just” a house finch on a backyard feeder perch, shot with an iPhone 15. But dang! He’s impressive and coppery!
