Been a Switch week for me. Did a shell swap for my partner’s Joycons. Originally grey/black. ExtremeRate Chrome Pink shell and buttons. Also swapped the plastic locks with metal ones on both mine and my partner’s so they don’t accidentally slip off anymore.
My partners joycons. They were originally default black/grey. I gave them a new ExtremeRate Chrome Rose Gold shell. Still need to change the colors in Joycon Toolkit. This is original lock that came installed in the Joycon. Because of the scratches on it, the Joycon can easily slide out of the rails without pressing the release button.

These are made of plastic which is why it can wear down so quickly. This is the Joycon with the new metal lock installed. These are much more durable and will ensure the Joycon will stay locked to the rail until you’re ready to take them off. No more accidental disconnects. These are my joycons put back together with the new lock.

Sometime when a Gameboy game doesn’t save, one reason could be the solder joints on the battery. I measured the voltage on the battery reading 0V. After removing the battery. I tested it again and it was 2.91V. After reapplying some fresh solder on the battery and pads, the game can save again!
Copy of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Gameboy Color. The shell is pretty worn and the label is severely damaged. Seller mentioned that the game’s battery was dry. When I opened the shell, I tested the battery on my multimeter and it read 0V. CR1616 batteries are usually rated at 3V. I was ready to replace the battery with a new one until something in me told me to test the battery I just removed. Tested with my multimeter and it read 2.91V which tells me this battery still has plenty of juice.Copy of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Gameboy Color. Cartridge shell is open to expose the PCB inside. Since the battery still works, I reapplied some fresh solder to the legs of the battery and the solder pads they’re connected to ensuring a strong connection. My guess as to why the battery wasn’t making a connection to the board was the game was probably dropped either from a tall height or multiple times. This is similar to what happened to my childhood copy of Pokémon Red.Super Mario Bros. Deluxe running on a standard Gameboy Advance which is why the screen is hard to see. It’s on the Select File screen of the game which shows that the game can hold a save again. My file shows I’m currently on World 4-1.

Brought another Pokemon back from the dead. This time, Red Version. Client’s copy had graphical glitches. Turns out the cart was in pretty bad shape and had broken traces. After repairing those traces and replacing the battery, it’s back to normal again 😁
PCB of Pokémon Red before I worked on it. The battery looks like it has a scorch marks. The corrosion is mostly in the back of the board and under the MBC3 mapper.Title screen of Pokémon Red. You can see where a Pokemon normally appears next to the trainer, it’s a box of jailbars. This also carries over into the Professor Oak introduction and Pokemon battles. The easiest fix for this is to reflow RAM, ROM, and Mapper; however, the same issue appeared even after reflowing and applying brand new solder. PCB of Pokémon Red after I worked on it. Did a full trace repair on both the rear and front of the board. The green splotches around the MBC3 mapper is solder mask to protect the trace repair job. I also installed a brand new CR2032 which will last longer than a standard CR2025.Title screen of Pokémon Red after repairs. Instead of the jailbars, you can Charmander appears normally beside the trainer. This game has been a rescued!

Call me a Necromancer because I brought this copy of Pokémon Blue back to life! Seller said that it wouldn’t save. It didn’t even boot. Pins were corroded. IC next to the battery had legs that were oxidized. Dead battery. Cleaned pins, removed oxidation, replaced old CR2025 with a brand new CR2032.
This is the PCB for Pokémon Blue version as I received it from Mercari. The connector pins were pretty corroded. The IC next to the save battery had two legs and the joints under them that were severely oxidized. Lastly, the battery was completely dead.

The game wouldn’t not boot in this state. Once I cleaned the pins, I was able to get the game to boot but the game wouldn’t not hold a save. I’d get a message saying the “The file has been destroyed” when trying to load the previous save. This is the PCB for Pokémon Blue after I worked on it.

I deep cleaned the connector pins, removed the oxidation from the legs and joints of the IC next to the battery, and replaced the old CR2025 with a brand new CR2032 (which will last longer). I had to build a jumper to one of the legs of the IC because one of the joints was too severely corroded which is what the solder mask is protecting.Testing Pokémon Blue after repairs on a Super Gameboy for Super Nintendo. I made a backup of this Pokémon Blue rom and played about an hour and a half on an emulator. I was able to use that save data and write it to the cartridge. It recognizes the save on the cartridge and the save holds even after power cycling.Testing Pokémon Blue after repairs on a Super Gameboy for Super Nintendo. I’m so close to getting this Pokémon Blue to work. Seller said it doesn’t save. When I got it, I couldn’t even get it to boot. Pins were in rough shape. That little chip to the left of the battery looks to have 2 darkened joints. Tried to freshen them up but I think that chip is busted.
This is a DMG-KFDN-10 PCB for Pokémon Blue for Gameboy. The seller indicated it doesn’t save. The battery seems to be new and in good condition. There’s a small chip to the left of the battery. I believe that’s what controller the saves. There were two joints that looked darker than the rest. I tried to deoxides the legs and used a jumper for a missing pad. Unfortunately during testing, it would tell me “Save file has been destroyed”. So that tells me that that chip might need to be replaced

Stuff I’ve been working on lately. Recapped SNES with a brand new shell to replace the old, yellowed, and damaged shell. Still need to work out kinks in the new one. I also made a DIY GBS-C. I did all the recommended mods from the GitHub. I still need a proper power supply to actually test it out.

Got a BlueRetro Adapter for my NES so I can use my newly Bluetooth modded NES controller. Turns out there were some kinks with button mapping, which thankfully, I was able to rectify. My fiancé got me an 8BitDo Bluetooth Mod Kit for the original NES controller. The original NES board has problems with messed up inputs but everything else about the controller was good. So I swapped the boards out. I’m impressed with the quality! Tested it on my Switch playing Punch Out.

How my week’s going 🙃
The section of a PS5 controller’s motherboard where the USB-C port should be installed. All of the solder pads except the anchor points for the USB-C port were torn off during the removal. The connector inside the USB-C port was wobbly to the touch and would not detect a USB cable which is why I wanted to replace the port. I used Chip-Quik and plenty of flux on all the joints and applied at least 420 degrees Celsius of heat from my hot air gun. I’m not sure what went wrong but I suspect it was from how wobbly the internal connector was which may have torn the traces or I may not have applied enough heat to that particular area that got torn off. I’m not sure. Either way, this will be a frustrating fix once I do more research. Worst case scenario, I’ll use this controller for parts.Broken microphone flex cable on a different PS5 controller. This is a simple fix but it’s also a reminder to slow down when opening any controller, especially PS5 controllers.

Modding’s all fun and games until you get stabbed by a rumble motor adhered by the strongest bonding agent known to man (exaggerating of course)
While cleaning up the inside of a Switch Pro Controller, I attempted to remove one of the rumble motors from the shell because it was adhered so strongly, it took a lot of effort to push it out from the other side. Once I pushed it out, the pressure from the push shoved the rumble motor into the side of my left hand. When I removed it from my hand, I was bleeding. So now I’m bandaged and showing the culprit rumble motor that injured me lol
