Fun news! I was named one of the inaugural #SciAmYoungAmericanScientists! Thank you to whoever nominated me - I’m excited for the research ahead in @thegardinerlab.bsky.social and working with my stellar students!

Spotlight: What’s next: Cell Biology from ASCB MOSAIC Program Alumni

Location: 116
Date: Monday Dec 8 5:30PM
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

In this session, six alumni of the ASCB MOSAIC Program (AMP) will present their latest research on a range of cell biology topics. The goal of the NIH-funded MOSAIC program, now concluded, was to diversify the tenure track faculty at research-intensive universities nationwide. AMP alumni are leaders in both their subfields of cell biology and in advancing equity and inclusion in the academic biosciences. Learning objectives include gaining new knowledge of cutting-edge cell biology research and networking with rising-star speakers.

First science session of #CellBio2025! 🧫🧪 Co-organized by @iaincheeseman.bsky.social and @abbybuch.bsky.social on the importance of the physiological context on studying cell biology. As a big fan of the ECM, I couldn’t agree more!
Photo of a PowerPoint slide that reads: “what is ‘physiological cell biology’?”

Underneath is a depiction of (left to right) gears, gears in a cell, a highlighted green cell in a liver. The corresponding words above it say molecular function <-> cellular organization <-> organismal contextPhoto of a PowerPoint slide that reads “traders between simplicity and fidelity in cell biology”

Underneath is a graph with simplicity on the X-axis and fidelity on y-axis. 4 points are within this space: 2D cell culture is high simplicity low fidelity, unicellular eukaryotes are high simplicity high fidelity, mammals are low simplicity high fidelity, and 3D cell culture is mid simplicity mid fidelity

All of this is reminding me of when I was on a panel at the 2023 San Diego Comic Con. The panel was titled “Dr. Evil: Scientists as Supervillains” and one of the questions we were asked was what would be our villain origin story. I didn’t really have an answer back then but I do now.
Photo of a room with people as more enter to fill it. In the foreground is a miniature replica of an orange 3D printed statue of myself and on the right side of the foreground is the back of a table tent sign displaying my name. Most of the font is too small for me to read but at the very bottom in bold it says “Jaye Gardiner” and at the bottom is the date, time, and title of the panel (Sunday 2:30PM to 3:30PM Dr. Evil: Scientists as Villains)

(3) My combination of science and illustration also makes me a science communicator. I’ve got to do this in a variety of venues from classic outreach to linking science an pop culture at San Diego Comic Con to talking to folks at a life size 3D printed statue of myself (😅)

Next year I’ll be a #NewPI: an Assistant Professor at Tufts University starting my own lab wanting to understand how viruses affect fibroblasts and that fibrous network (called the extracellular matrix) to make an environment supportive for cancer to flourish.

A few fun facts: I love cartoons and comics and rarely watch things with actual humans in it. I have no attention span for movies and I will disappoint you (no, I have not seen Star Wars or LotR). I’ve never had a cup of coffee. Crochet fiend (I track/graph progress). Proudly left handed.
