Tina Peters. Openly plotting sedition. You absolute, inconceivable schmuck.

That these people feel perfectly safe literally shouting their intentions from the rooftops with no consequences whatsoever tells you everything. I‘m unable to see how this country can be saved from itself. How is there any salvaging this? Everything is broken.

Especially Pete Hegseth. And since he’s an actual combat veteran, that is REALLY saying something.

All Republican men are weak. Conservative and right-wing politics definitionally attract weak men. That’s been overwhelmingly obvious for years now.

This is all Hegseth, subjecting the entire military — and us — to his own projected personal insecurities, obsessions, phobias, and pathologies. Apart from Trump, who is a category unto himself, Hegseth is the most ridiculous human being I have ever known of.

On another note, can we take a moment to step back and remember what it was like to have presidents who were NOT always seen at their desk with their staff *towering* over them like toddler-minding babysitters? Seriously. For a shitheand as obsessed with power optics as he is, it’s an odd look.

I don’t understand. Why would the doctors and nurses just ignore her birth plan? I know nothing about maternity care whatsoever, so I have no frame of reference for what the article discusses, or of Ali’s experience.

I might get blasted to hell for saying this, but….it’s hard for me to imagine even the original top brass like Tytla, Babbit, Natwick, the Nine Old Men, etc. —- being able to animate the VERY specific and complex head shape of the Grand Councilwoman in Lilo and Stitch. I mean…that fascinates me.

(cont) It is INSANE to me that the past 29 years have been a long, slow, process of watching all my 14-year-old self’s fears come true, piece by piece, inch by inch. I was a goddamned KID and I knew. Deep down I always knew. Political analysts, journalists, etc. — what was THEIR excuse?? 2/2

I was 14 years old in 1997 when I read “1984”. Combine that with what I already knew about Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin, and with what even with my young teen’s perspective I could clearly see and hear, I thought “The Republican Party are authoritarians who would go full fascist if they could.” 1/2

Somehow — don’t ask me how — I was unaware of Musk until late 2018, when he was just beginning to be a political voice. So I never knew him as the popular genius-innovator figure with a solid reputation. All I knew was what I was hearing now, and I was like, “I don’t get it. This guy seems dumb.” 🤨❓

Me in 2016: “Okay, Rudy Giuliani seems genuinely unbalanced lately. Why is nobody talking about how erratic his behavior is?” Me around 2020: “Elon Musk just seems kind of…stupid.”

(cont) The calculation to be made is whether avoiding El-Sayed’s UAE connection is worth the price of maintaining a politics that will continue racking up high human tolls until we wean ourselves off it. In the long run, that would include ending our relationship with the sleazy petrostates.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
To ignore the wider consequences of moving our politics in one direction versus the other and frame it in terms of Calhounism and invoking comfort women… That’s needlessly incendiary and reductive. Especially since we’re dealing with a situation far more dire than one person’s real estate profits.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Wait, this is going off the rails. There was between a politics that maintains corrupting incentive structures that have a high human toll here and abroad, or one that aims to dismantle that corrupt incentive structure and repair the damage it’s created. The latter is long-term harm reduction.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Friend. You don’t know anything about my politics. You‘re making a lot of wild assumptions. If you‘re referring to the economically beneficial legislation and executive actions Obama and Biden both managed to pull off, the latter under especially incredible odds, no serious person ignores that.
110
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
The reduction comes from prying ourselves loose from the corrupt political infrastructure that’s become normalized over the past few decades, which has — on top of producing terrible domestic consequences — put us in the position of enabling an irrational and destabilizing foreign state.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
That’s a response to something that wasn’t said. I said that the party’s drift away from economic populism played a role, but that economic reductionists who think that’s the whole story are completely unserious. What’s inaccurate about that?
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Don’t flatten my views into the caricatured “modern Leftist” you’re talking about. It‘s not easy to convey much nuance in these limited posts. Primaries are when you have to weigh long-term consequences of your party’s choice. And the one calculation that matters above all others is harm reduction.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
The pick-your-poison is between one strain that owns no property in sex-trafficania but aims to maintain the political infrastructure that has put us in the position of enabling and running cover for a dangerous and destabilizing foreign state — and one that aims to dismantle that infrastructure.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
No, I don’t. But what am I saying that’s wrong, here?
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Wait a minute. This is s strawman. FDR’s New Deal coalition could only be formed by having to work around and accommodate the southern supremacists. Otherwise it wouldn’t have passed at all. No serious person calling for a return to economic populism is ignorant of that history.
000
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
I’m not thrilled about that but I think this frames it in a very flattening way. But what is it about Steven’s’ politics that you favor over El-Sayed’s?
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Wait a minute. Those aren’t mutually exclusive at all and I’ve never seen any serious arguments that they are. Economic reductionism is inherently unserious as it completely whitewashes the reactionary backlash to the ‘60s. But to say the shift toward neoliberalism played no role is also unserious.
110
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Can you explain “Jefferson Davis Dem”?
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
That’s your takeaway from this? “Sore loser”? That’s just bad-faith deflection away from the substance of what’s being discussed here. If you want to push back against the politics, do that. Don’t slap the non-sequitur label of “sore loser” on it and expect it to read as a serious take.
010
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
He does not talk about 2016. That does not happen.
100
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
That makes no sense. I don’t understand how people who say this are missing that Sanders and his still small but quickly-growing faction of political allies are literally the only source of momentum in Democratic politics, and have been since the initial wave of post-Obama optimism fizzled out.
000
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
By what definition of “grifter” does Sanders remotely qualify as one? To be a grifter, there has to BE a grift. What’s the grift here?
010
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I’m starting to feel there are certain words that should require passing a written exam and acquiring a license before you’re allowed to use them online. “Cope” is one of them.
021
JLG @jayellgii.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
Will someone explain to me how that’s even possible?? I don’t understand — it’s not like we’ve been bombarding Iran with apocalyptic intensity, reducing cities to rubble, etc. Things have been — in relative terms -- on the restrained side. So how are we almost out of missiles? I don’t get it.

The mental gymnastics in these conversations are maddening. This is as straightforward as cause-and-effect gets. The U.S. continues to send military aid to a state that is aggressively using it for a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Absent that aid, that state cannot sustain those campaigns.
