Encourage everyone to read the words of the Declaration issued on this day 250 years ago that started this American experiment in democracy.

Every year on the 4th of July, I make a point of reading this. It's as relevant today as when it was written a century and a half ago. And it IS Brooklyn!

SCHOOLS OUT! Happy Last Day. Grateful to our amazing students, families, educators & parent leaders for an incredible year of shared advocacy. We accomplished a lot, and a lot remains to be accomplished. Wishing a safe, happy, restful summer, and a great 2026-2027 year ahead!

Bishop Kearney's closing left this building mostly vacant for 6 years. The Middle School of Innovation joined Bklyn's Daily Discovery Pre-K this year, infusing the space with energy & purpose. Yesterday's ribbon cutting, dedicating it in honor of Flora Iannarelli, was special.

Wherever you are. Whoever you are with. I'm hoping that tonight you get to create one of those rare "I remember where I was and who I was with" moments that you'll never forget. Go Knicks! #KnicksInFive

Always powerful to witness the massive neighborhood processional pass by my corner each #GoodFriday. Regardless of your background, it’s hard not to be moved by the solemnity and dedication on display. Wishing a meaningful day to all who are observing.

Trump demanded a "list of Jews" from the University of Pennsylvania, and a federal judge said, "Sure. It's not like history can teach us that there is anything wrong with giving a far-right, aspiring dictator a 'list of Jews.'" How is this our reality. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/31/u...

Great to be at my alma mater Seth Low for Chancellor Samuels visit this AM where he announced Interim-Acting prefix was now dropped from "Superintendent Erin Lynch-Reyes." Congrats to our very deserving Supe & to all D21 families, who are very fortunate to have such a capable leader.

In the 1890s, suffragist Laura C. Holloway's Seidl Society organized all-day concerts in Brighton Beach & Coney Island for underprivileged women & children, offering free meals & beach access, convinced music could dispel sex, race, or economic divisions. #InternationalWomensDay

3/2/1867: Congress created the Dept of Education following slavery's end. It's a dark irony to see DOE HQ honor Booker T. Washington while promoting a man who said, "Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously" and that we must "Ditch the DOE."

@nycschools.bsky.social custodial staff remain undefeated. After my own shoveling, swung by few schools their amazing work (still, into the night), then I dug out x-walk ramps at a few intersections near schools. If you have the ability to dig out even one x-walk ramp, it makes a big difference.

All cell phones in NYC just got this message. Seriously, stay off the roads thru Monday 12pm. On a less serious (but kinda serious) note, I'm glad we have a mayor who issued a statement like this, because the last one would have ended it by telling us to all stay in and smash.

UPDATE (as of 2/22 @ 12pm): The Mayor has announced that tomorrow, Monday, 2/23, will be an old-school snow day. That means all schools will be closed *and* there will be NO pivot to remote learning.

On John Lewis's birthday, as our democracy & our communities face new challenges and far too much silence, it's as important as ever to heed his advice: "Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."

On this day in 1939, 20,000 Nazis filled Madison Square Garden. Isadore Greenbaum (26) from Brooklyn rushed the stage to shout "Down with Hitler." Let’s channel that same Brooklyn courage to stand up against hate, extremism or fascism whenever it shows its face in NYC. 🗽

Coney Island, late 1800s: integrated beaches vs. minstrel shows & the Black-led "Negro Colony" on Coney Island Creek. The area’s pioneering spirit remains through Granville T. Woods, the genius behind the electric roller coaster and the subway’s third rail. #BlackHistoryMonth

All deeply flawed, but we've gone from our 1st #President (2x elected w/ 100% of Electoral College & set standard of voluntarily leaving) to our current (36% approval, 62% disapproval & testing guardrails of democracy). "Unpresidential" cannot be our new standard. #PresidentsDay

There will be time to talk about how this shouldn't have happened, how we keep seeing these tragedies, how we need to effect significant change (I'm thinking that) but right now our thoughts need to be w/ a family that's dealing w/ the impossible reality of losing their child.

First they came, and we must never forget how the story ended. On #HolocaustRemembranceDay, we remember the victims of the Holocaust and that the past is our strongest defense for the future. Silence in the face of injustice is the greatest danger of all. #NeverForget #NeverAgain

Much appreciation for someone posting in a community FB group about a Bensonhurst car w/ window open. The MacGyvered umbrella the good samaritan tried, helped, though much snow got in. Removed as much as I could and covered it with plastic. Hopefully it holds up for the owner.
