A Mind Forever Voyaging, developed in response to Reagan's re-election, where an AI simulates the effects of neoliberalism over 50 years on a small midwest town. After predicting environmental decay, arbitrary police raids, and televised executions its political masters try to silence the program.

Recently discovered The Train, a game where you're French resistance delivering Nazi-stolen art to the allies. It's a "plate spinning" simulator with multi-step input, playable in about 20 minutes. It feels like the progenitor to a modern indie game: Iron Lung 30 years before Iron Lung.

My hyper-fixation of the week: Densha de Go on an elevator. I know "Densha de Slow" doesn't work but let's go with it.

Games never should've advanced beyond the "sixth generation" because Raven Software perfected X-Men 20 years ago.

What if a modern adaption of DOS era detective games that starred you, the player, but things get increasingly personal as the game continues? Like those Doritos Flash games where you could opt into receiving emails.

37. Mole A contemporary take on Soviet era existential horror (Solaris, On the Silver Globe) combining esoteric religious themes and brutalist retro-futurism. The kind of game where after viewing the "credits" I had to take a walk to decompress.

Mockup of a Story of Seasons style game where you maintain a co-op rooftop garden while organization with your neighbors to buy the deed to the building. As a suburban boy I dream of living in a clean self-sustainable urban environment. #lowpoly #pixelart

This game was originally released in Scandinavian countries in Danish. A full English version was produced but never released. Until now this was considered lost media. If you're a sicko who loves The Dark Eye, Cosmology of Kyoto, and Gadget this is a game you can really sink your teeth into.

London Seirei Tanteidan a ps1 Bandai rpg finally got an English translation by humans. As an RPG it’s fairly like a 7/10 so far but the novelty of playing an original game for the first time in English is holding strong.

We are like 6 years into AI powered roleplaying platforms and none of them come close to the brilliance of Facade a 21 year old game. LLM platforms refuse to be rude to the user.

#screenshotsaturday 1st of June, 2016. Wednesday. 28 year old JB signed the title to his new home, a 1,300ft² 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom townhouse. He has 5 days to settle in. Living on his own for the first time on a $36,000 a year salary, JB is looking forward to a new lease on life (lol).

So much hyperbole over “worst game ever“ I challenge you to play Mugen Senshi Valis on Famicom. for every complaint about Friday the 13th map here’s a map where the orientation can change mid-screen. The edge of a screen can loop back to the middle of the screen!

35. Aleshar: World of Ice One of the more unique and unheard of PC RPGs. Focusing on bloody, brutal combat and harsh survival in a world blanketed in ice. Victory is determined by striking first and hard. Prolonged combat is a disadvantage and you'll bleed out from compounding limb based wounds.

34 Star Fleet II: Krellan Commander v2.0 Called the 7th-worse PC game by CGW, this game fucks hard. Grand strategy in a Klingon-simulator with a charming ASCII interface. Destroy Federation ships, invade planets, enslave the population, and lead a fleet of slavering warlord aliens.

33. Akuji the Demon Akuji the Demon was an early indie evolution of Metroid compared to the direction Castlevania was going. Big expressive sprites, increased focus on platforming and secrets over combat, and mobility focused upgrades with a cute story about the final boss regaining his powers.

32. Tenderfoot Tactics Don't sleep on Tenderfoot Tactics. It features cute goblins, an open world navigable by static maps that vary by region, 16 classes, a really tight battle system set in a dynamically evolving tiny space (usually 9x9), and the best use of shaders in any game. Period.

31. Tactical Breach Wizards TBW distills tactical gaming experience down to one move + one action with great variability in results. Turns are 100% deterministic with the variability occuring at the end of the turn giving great tension to setting up future turns. Tom Francis doesn't miss.

30. Freakhunter Another game that adapts grid-based first person movement into a rarely seen genre mash-up: first person shooter! And by God does it work with buttery smooth movement and arcade sensibilities in respect to pacing. It's a simple game where every design consideration is meaningful.

29. Psychopomp I'm noticing a trend in adapting old school grid-based movement to indie games, particularly horror themed. Psychopomp uses the grid to heighten the tension by limiting visibility and freedom of movement, then combines it with my favorite aspect of DOS gaming: a sick ass UI.

28. The Nameless Mod I mourn internet forums which meant the death of community fan games. The Nameless Mod is a 2000s era shitpost in appearance but at its core is a fan community creation that rivals and frequently exceeds Deus Ex with multiple branching paths and callbacks to your actions.

27. Beyond the Edge of Owlsgard Point and click designers forget that death can be a learning experience and fun. Owlsgard is a great adventure in its own right but uses death (with checkpoints, mind) to express the hardships of its talking animal world being invaded by an oppressive evil.

26. Else Heart.Break() This game has everything I crave: lo-fi retro aesthetic, sprawling urban setting, a simulated world with NPC schedules, and every object can be hacked. It's like hipster The Matrix but also totally inscrutable and demands you put in the work to get a unique experience.

23. Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord Simultaneous turns, true line of sight, carefully modeled ballistics, penetration, and logistics. The WYSIWYG nature of design offloads a lot of crunchiness to focus on results. I'm disappointed Slitherine bought Battlefront but it hasn't impacted quality yet.

22. La-Mulana La-Mulana transcends its inspirations into a game that looks and feels authentic but stands alone in its scope and scale. Playing this circa 2007 with no guide and sharing secrets in forums populated by a couple dozen rabid fans is the most formative moment of my adult gaming life.

21. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale Recettear is a decent dungeon crawling/item shop sim that was propelled to internet stardom by Carpe Fulgur's strong localization, spawning its own memes I still see today. Proof that a good localization carries its own weight.

20. Paratopic I constantly look book at Paratopic as an example for how a linear narrative can pack so much detail in a confined space. "Every frame is a painting" is a cliche at this point but for real, every environment in this game is a diorama that feels lived in.
