Dear West Virginia University Board of Governors,

By your very presence here today, I believe you have a vested interest in this University and are committed to providing the best educational opportunities afforded to West Virginians. It is with this common ground that I make this appeal.

In a statement released on Tuesday, VP for Research Fred King stated that the University will be focusing on data-driven fields of artificial intelligence and analytics. On the surface, there is nothing wrong with that, however we must not invest in artificial intelligence at the expense of human intelligence. King said “our students will be competing in a world in which data will reign supreme.” Data is not an entity; Data is not some future overlord. The power that can be obtained by data, the potential for a better future that data affords us, is through critical thinking.
