We've all come home from amazing conditions with a memory card full of very similar frames. Taking fewer photos isn't a rule, but it can be a sign that you're becoming more deliberate and more confident. #landscapephotography

Has landscape photography changed what you notice when you don't have a camera with you - light, colour, texture, shapes, small details? What do you find yourself seeing differently now? #landscapephotography

I love cameras, tripods and filters. But at some point your gear becomes good enough. When you stop wondering what to buy next and start concentrating more on the artistic side, that's progress. #landscapephotography

Do you take more photos or fewer photos on a landscape shoot than you did when you started? I suspect becoming more selective often comes with confidence, but I'm curious whether that's true for you. #landscapephotography

A slightly counterintuitive sign of progress: coming home with fewer photos. It can mean you're more confident in your settings and composition, and less worried that you need dozens of near-duplicates just in case. #landscapephotography

If you're coming home from shoots with fewer photos than you used to, that may actually be progress. I explain why, plus 6 other signs your landscape photography is getting better: youtu.be/nELt-oNOX7Y #landscapephotography

Editing progress isn't only about making a photo look better. It's also reaching the point where you can see what you want from an image and instinctively know which tools will get you there. #landscapephotography

If some of your old photos don't look as good to you as they once did, that's probably good news. Your standards have changed because your eye has changed. Compare your work now with your work then. #landscapephotography

When you look back at photos you loved 5 or 10 years ago, do you still like them as much now? Or can you immediately see things you'd do differently today? #landscapephotography

If you still have an internal thirst to learn - camera settings, editing, planning shoots or finding new locations - that's a strong sign you're moving forward as a landscape photographer. #landscapephotography

Photography changes the way you see ordinary places. Morning light on a cluster of trees, autumn colours, smooth pebbles on a beach - noticing details you once walked past is a real kind of progress. #landscapephotography

One of the best signs your landscape photography is improving is simply that you still want to get out and make photos. If that desire is still there, even when the weather isn't exciting, your photography is probably doing okay. #landscapephotography

Is focus stacking a regular part of your landscape workflow, or something you only use when the foreground is very close to the lens? #landscapephotography

A landscape technique doesn’t have to be something you use on every photograph to be worth learning. Long exposures, monochrome and focus stacking are simply extra creative options you can choose when a scene suits them. #landscapephotography

Jason Roberts @jasonrobertsphoto.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Black and white isn’t only something to decide later in editing. Using a monochrome viewfinder on location can change what you notice in the scene and sometimes reveal a photograph you might otherwise walk past. #landscapephotography

Stopping down increases depth of field, but very small apertures can also soften the image through diffraction. Focus stacking gives you another option when you want sharpness from something close to the lens all the way to the horizon. #landscapephotography

Which of these took you longest to start using in landscape photography: moving your feet, getting low, black and white, long exposures or focus stacking? #landscapephotography

Jason Roberts @jasonrobertsphoto.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
You don’t need an ND filter to start experimenting with long exposures. Shoot very early, very late or into blue hour, stop the lens down and you may already be into multi-second exposures. It’s enough to start learning what the technique can do. #landscapephotography

Before I set up the tripod, I like to move around and use the viewfinder or screen to test alternate compositions. A few metres left, right, forward or back can completely change how the scene fits together. #landscapephotography

If a scene looks a little flat in colour, switching the viewfinder to black and white can reveal contrast, texture, shapes and shadows you weren’t noticing. It’s one of five beginner techniques in this video: youtu.be/gr2GYVk6Pyc #landscapephotography

Do you ever switch your EVF or rear screen to black and white while shooting RAW? I find it can make contrast, texture, shapes and shadows much easier to notice. Does it help you see differently? #landscapephotography

Jason Roberts @jasonrobertsphoto.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Focus stacking sounds complicated at first, but the idea is simple: take several photos of the same composition focused at different distances, then combine them so the foreground through to the distant landscape can all be sharp. #landscapephotography

Long exposure photography gives you a different way to see the world. I like to think of it as bending time: anything moving through the scene can blur, giving you a creative option that simply doesn’t exist at faster shutter speeds. #landscapephotography

Jason Roberts @jasonrobertsphoto.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
If a scene feels a little boring in colour, try switching your camera display to black and white while shooting RAW. You keep the colour information, but suddenly contrast, textures, shapes and shadows can become much easier to see. #landscapephotography

How often do you deliberately change camera height when composing a landscape? Do you tend to shoot around eye level, or are you regularly getting the camera right down near the ground? #landscapephotography

Don’t always shoot landscapes from head or chest height. Get the camera close to the ground and see what changes. Altering camera height can give you a very different relationship between the foreground and the rest of the scene. #landscapephotography
