Very excited to read this new book from Claire Grossman, Juliana Spahr, and Stephanie Young — "Crowd Control The Racial Ordering of Literary Reward". The work leading up to it has been thrilling and provocative.

Turnitin steals student writing so it can catch students stealing writing. It requires students to upload papers for free or, even worse, professors upload student papers without their permission to a machine that now owns the paper. No compensation. It's a super fascist ed tech tool.

Proposed to my wife in there, dueing the hot summer of 2002. We're still together now.

Hang on a second -- it's almost as if they were not really trying to make America great again at all.

Better get that one on later. Her peak era.

Absolutely colossal. The Bryan Ferry version is a decent cover.

That is an utterly fantastic record.

Huge when I was 13. We had no idea that we were living through one of pop's greatest ever years.

Same here -- knocked my socks off. I was 16.

Rich, thanks so much again. Book eagerly awaited! I'd like to do an academic article about the experience of music listened to on the move via the #5albums polls. Last year I gave a presentation on this at Lancaster Uni but I haven't had time to write it up. Take care and enjoy the break, mate 👏 🎶

Three of my five top twenty -- delighted to see De La and the Blue Nile finish so high. Third for the Velvets is great although I did hope they'd pip the Roses!

Splendid. One of many brilliant lyrics.

That's always been a strange one (the Maarjamäe memorial). Funny how people seem more offended by a Soviet-era memorial to the 1905 Revolution like the 'Taxi!' one than by Tsarist oppression, when that system was every bit as bad as the post-Stalin Soviet one. Weddings in manor houses etc

Yes, agreed. As with earlier new technologies (e.g printing, railways) we have to separate the ways in which it can massively improve things for people from the objectives of the tech barons, absolute monarchs etc who try to keep total control and use it for profit/dominance/exploitation.

Definitely got time that week and at least Monday/Tuesday of the following. Will spend some time in the BL and also seek out seminars around Senate House etc.

efforts (Reidi tee and that rather cramped and flashy Rotermanni corridor). I also have very fond memories of Rahvus Raamatokogu and surroundings as they were in the early 2000s -- it's where I got my academic mojo working again after a decade of drifting!

It is a sad story, yes. The place was still hosting concerts and big theatre shows during my first spell living in Tallinn (2002-05). I've never been in but apparently the spaces inside are incredible. It still connects the centre (Viru Väljak area) to the sea much better than the later (1/2)

Unfortunately will miss this but will be in London the following week, in case you know of any interesting seminars etc then.

#5debutalbumsfinal Just an incredibly good album. I heard this on the radio -- a year later, having got a music centre with turntable for Christmas aged 14, I got hold of the album. m.youtube.com/watch?v=2q5C... The Blue Nile, 'Tinseltown in the Rain' from A Walk Across the Rooftops' (1984)

Comparative Literature departments in the States tend to be much more left-leaning than English departments there. On the wokeness or otherwise of Cambridge University, the recent expose in the FT of what they've let Reform UK politician James Orr, also a Cambridge academic, is quite startling.

Loved that place as a child--my aunt and uncle lived nearby and we would always walk down the Chine towards the sea when we visited.

Cairo, IL! Still to see that confluence although I've seen the Mississippi-Missouri one just north of STL close up.

I still miss my two classic 900s ... but only a bit. The 9-5 estate is very cool, though.

So sad to hear of the death of Bonnie Greer, novelist, broadcaster and hugely inspiration woman. She was a great supporter of this Womensart project & WA books and our chats will be cherished always. A true intellectual & beautiful person. RIP xx

This was my favourite album when I was 15 -- it was so great to discover it back then.

Jason Finch @jasonpfinch.bsky.social · 12/09/2026

Don't they just. I have fond memories of all four being in the charts when I was pre-teens / early teens -- the Madness and UB40 ones I later got hold of on greatest hits albums.

Jason Finch @jasonpfinch.bsky.social · 12/09/2026

Top right: four incredibly good singles (Madness, The Police, UB40, Bowie).

Mayor Zohran Mamdani did in eight months what NYC officials refused to do for 25 years: he unsealed 68 boxes and put 170,000 pages of hidden 9/11 files online. What these documents expose about the government lying to ground zero heroes is devastating: www.dworkinsubstack.com/p/they-wrote...
