How many sketches do you usually need before you feel like you’ve got a handle on a new character? #CANart #art #webcomic #process #sketch #comicbookart #cartooning

Digital sketch in light blue under-drawing with grey pencil, featuring a large man dynamically pulling a line or rope of some kind with his right arm. He wears a hat that is yet unclear, perhaps one worn by the Canadian Mounties. There are no background details and the drawing is loose and gestural.

See you at MCAF / FBDM this weekend! GROUP OF 7 Comics in Tent A05 between Roy and Duluth. Exploring the DNA of #mikemignola #hellboy through drawing this #homage #mashup Do you think Kirby’s The Demon is somewhere in the genetic? I wanted to see what HB might look like through Kirby’s lens.

An homage to The Demon number 1 with Hellboy in the place of Etrigan.

Do you ever tweak your artwork after it’s been published? This one first appeared on social media with a different approach, placing the figures within the title lettering. A variation of that was printed in @group-of-7-comics.bsky.social Peregrines: Badlands. I think I like this new one best.

A quick digital drawing added to PEREGRINES: BADLANDS from @group-of-7-comics.bsky.social I see something there, so I’m tempted to use it as the basis for a traditional pen and ink piece. #digitalart #illustration #comicbookart #indiecomics #smallpress #canadiancomics #canadianbooks #dinosaurs

Just finished the #hellboy drawing I’ve been sharing here and on IG for a few days. Ink and wash on 9x12” bristol. Up for sale locally or shipped to ya. DM me for details. #art #artwork #canartist #inkdrawing #inkwash #comicbookart #commissionsopen

A large demi-demon stands amongst skulls and dirt in what could be a graveyard, while carrying a smoking gun in his left hand. His right hand is oversized and has a rock-like texture, and his demon horns are sanded down to two flat discs above his eyes. He wears a trench coat and combat belt. The image is rendered in heavy black ink and a wash of greys. Hellboy is a no-nonsense paranormal investigator created by American cartoonist Mike Mignola.

Have you been to a comics event that profoundly inspired you? I’m reflecting on our Group of 7 experience at The International Festival of Comics in Angoulême one year ago. Met talented Canadian cartoonists and publishers (in France? 🤣), kind and generous locals, and saw mind-blowing original art.

An image I made in the fall. To be economic, I tried to create a composition that could serve a variety of purposes depending on the cropping. Book cover, display banner, website banner, etc. One of the first I’ve made with characters from both ‘The Group’ and Peregrines. #CANart #art #illustration

A montage of characters from the Group of 7 Comics series are arranged in cool reds, warm blues, and full colour. Seven characters charge forward from an explosion. Two characters stand tall faded in the background, while the many faces of villainy lurk in the shadows at the bottom of the image.

Do you ever make comics quickly? ‘Peregrines: Badlands’ is the fourth comic that we produced in a spontaneous style, with little to no script, and most panels were drawn in 15-20 min. The ‘how’ and ‘why’ we (Chris Sanagan and I) worked this way can wait for another time. Here’s page 1 #webcomic

Here’s 3 images of the Alberta Badlands, with four riders on horseback coming forward from the dusty horizon.

New cover art for an upcoming graphic novel. I can’t wait to colour it, so maybe it will be a late night. On second thought, I should consider ink-wash first. #comicbookart #bookcoverart #drawing #inkdrawing #comics #comix #graphicnovel #illustration

Artist Adam Matak wisely reminded me that ‘you can’t edit what you can’t see’. I need to start somewhere. I can finally see the entire next comic before me. Let the editing begin, by sculpting, carving, smashing, and rebuilding over and over until someone takes my tools away.
