I really enjoyed doing this interview with Frances Haugen about how leaking to journalists works and why sources get caught, why Meta continues to he a disaster, and what it’s like to see yourself dramatized in a movie: youtu.be/oB3IxwCfP7M?...

For NJans and NYers, the NY/NJ HIDTA (the bizarro pseudo-federal agency discussed in the article) is also the owner/controller of the main facial recognition system used by law enforcement across our region. A terrifying surveillance apparatus being built outside traditional public accountability.

this is the funniest thing i've seen in a looooong time. city passes new rule allowing prayer before city council meetings. satanist prays. city council then debates proper time to "undo the curse that was just put on our city" www.404media.co/it-is-done-h...

for those wondering, this cost us about $500 + a full day of someone's time to get, even though it was entered into evidence in a court case months ago. Still crazy to me that we have to pay for court records and in many cases you have to physically go there to get them

Body cam footage obtained by 404 Media reveals the first Flock camera searches ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge, and highlights how the system has turned otherwise mundane traffic stops into interrogations for drivers. @jasonkoebler.bsky.social scopp here: www.404media.co/watch-footag...

This was only a matter of time. In a very real way, the net effect of networked license plate readers is more like putting a GPS device on a car than it is like driving past individual security cameras. And if police wanted to track you over time w/ GPS device or your phone---they'd need a warrant.

Flock's whole thing is that they argue their system does not need a warrant and they claim this is a settled issue. Very hard to overstate the importance that a federal judge has said this is not the case. Flock's CEO just said it was "pretty cut and dry"
The new decision also immediately invalidates the core argument that Flock’s CEO Garrett Langley has made saying that Flock was not a constitutional issue. “You and I don’t get to pick what’s a constitutional violation and what’s not. We have judges, we have elected officials, there’s a process for that. We follow the law, we follow the Constitution. So far, in our belief and what will be for a long time, the courts have deemed this is not a warrantless search; this is a valid product as it relates to the Fourth Amendment. So I don’t see any change there,” Langley told The Drive in July, adding the issue was “pretty cut and dry.”

Notably, Hill suggested that other courts that have ruled Flock searches do not constitute a Fourth Amendment search were likely wrong to do so, and that they have not considered the widespread and automated context of the AI-powered surveillance system.

This is an incredibly important decision, and the judge is requiring the court to throw out all evidence obtained against her. Judge wrote Flock’s network is “a type of indiscriminate mass surveillance” and that courts must update their understanding of the technology
“The Fourth Amendment requires courts to draw a line when the cost is too great. Alaniz’s search in just the ALPR system provided him with more than 50 individual records of Kyle’s whereabouts across the country for an entire month,” Hill wrote. “The Court finds that because the ALPR systems Alaniz used to search Kyle’s historical location information intruded on her reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of her physical movements, it was a search under the Fourth Amendment. Based on the information in the record, the only reason Alaniz conducted that search was because he saw her license plate was from California.”

the goalposts for being an effective or "efficient" person just change with tech advances so there's nothing AI is going to be able to do that is going to be like: wow, now that the robot does my tasks i have infinite time to sit by the pool

i can scrub through a 4hr city council meeting in five mins thanks to YT transcripts but also so can everyone else, and so can an AI slop generator. So this doesn't make my life easier than a reporter in 1999 who went to the city council meeting and wasn't publishing into a fucked up info ecosystem

i see arguments like this sometimes and ... what's the thing. what is this "everyday annoying task" that an AI could actually do and that you could trust it to not totally fuck up? i cannot imagine the things. and tech/robots have made a lot of tasks more efficient but there's always more shit
there are so many everyday demos that could make ai, personal agents, & agents in general feel insanely powerful to normal ppl & yet ai companies keep choosing things like booking flights, planning travel, or god forbid planning a god damn wedding.

these are not everyday problems. they're relatively rare events & worse for a lot of ppl they're actually part of the joys of life. the best demo should make someone feel pain they already are familiar with disappearing. almost every company gets this wrong. they optimize for spectacle instead of relief which is fine in some cases but it doesn't last.

one of my favorite historical examples is a product called head on.

the ad showed someone with a headache, then showed them applying the product directly to their forehead while repeating:

"head on. apply directly to the forehead."

beautifully simple. you instantly understood the product, the problem, & the value. ai companies should be doing the same thing.

show me the annoying thing i deal with every single day then make it disappear. it's not sexy, i guarantee it will work. when jobs demo'ed the iphone he picked universal simple problems that the iphone did better than anything else on the fucking planet.

anyway, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
