That's that "Spielberg Reaction Shot" in action and Sam Neill did it brilliantly. Close Encounters has more examples of the technique. It's great character-focused filmmaking.

Ummm, raising taxes and spending money IS fixing policy. It's kind of fundamental to how policy works.

The complaint seems to be less about QR codes as a means of passing info and more about digital menus. QR codes are great. Digital menus suck. Problem solved. :)

The sort of AI that's being shoved down the market's collective throat and crypto share the same "something for nothing" value prospect. We're not being pitched a pattern recognition engine that can detect cancer from x-rays. We're being pitched "write without learning to write", etc.

This is a good follow-on to the convo about how SF works. While I like this film, I feel like it misses the cold war vibe of Who Goes There? which the first film adaptation didn't, but that's because Carpenter's film reflects its time, not the time of the original.

A lot of people miss the fact that this neat story they're reading is an extended reductio ad absurdum argument or that this cool technology they're reading about is an extended metaphor meant to highlight a particular aspect of human behavior or just a way to set the stage for the real point.

My nine year old self, on his first trip to the south, was asked if he wanted grits with his order. He charmingly asked what a grit was and how many came in an order. Ended up loving them and later moved on to advanced classes that included such wonders as hush puppies.
