Wow - thanks so much, Ken! We appreciate you listening and taking the time to post. Who else should we be talking to in 2025?

Great conversation - I appreciated how the game ideas were very student-oriented and feasible. Well done, all.

Again, I agree we're not talking enough about this AND have enough research/data about it to make informed decisions. Because of character restrictions, I put the references used in a google doc here. Open to any and all feedback: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

ChatGPT Energy References Fall 2024
This was made using ChatGPT 4o by Jason Johnston on Nov 16, 2024 (at probably a total energy cost of 0.005 kWh) Here’s the updated and comprehensive reference list, including scholarly papers and ad...

Thanks for this. There are genuine concerns. Most arguments I hear, however, are hyperbolic or "large-scale analogies" (the moon-and-back) that don't compare with our everyday energy use concerns. What I'm attaching is quick research - I made it with ChatGPT 4o and Google so it might be wrong.
“A table titled ‘Energy Consumption of Everyday Items’ lists the energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) for common activities and devices, organized from highest to lowest:
	•	Gallon of Gasoline: 33.7 kWh
	•	Running a Gas-Powered Lawn Mower (1 hour): 2.0 kWh
	•	Using a Hair Dryer (1 hour): 1.5 kWh
	•	Running a Refrigerator (24 hours): 1.2 kWh
	•	Watching TV (5 hours): 0.5 kWh
	•	100 ChatGPT-4 Queries (0.0005 kWh/query; Source: FusionChat.ai): 0.05 kWh
	•	Frying an Egg: 0.05 kWh
	•	100 Google Searches (0.0003 kWh/search; Source: Tom’s Guide): 0.03 kWh
	•	Charging a MacBook Pro (full charge): 0.06 kWh
	•	100 Emails (0.0002 kWh/email; Source: Estimated average): 0.02 kWh
	•	Charging a Smartphone (full charge): 0.02 kWh

This ranking illustrates the varying energy consumption of activities and devices, highlighting significant differences in scale.”

“they felt like an insider“ - absolutely love this phrase. Reminds me of Michelle Miller’s “same side pedagogy” idea that I’ve referenced many times since reading it - thank you

We just used it at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as part of a "Digital Learning Book Club" with a great response. Four Zoom meetings for four chapters + async discussion. One faculty said, "This is the best PD I've had in a long time." Sparked a lot of questions, conversation, and care.
