I keep coming to BlueSky to post something, realizing it doesn't allow enough characters in one post, and then posting it on Threads instead 🤷‍♂️

I just saw TikTok has randomly put all my signed paperbacks on a flash sale! Until midnight Eastern US time, they're all half price. If you're in the US, go grab em fast! Follow this link to my TikTok account, and then go to my shop / spotlight to find the paperbacks that are on sale:

People who aren't writers underestimate how much of the writing process is just sitting and staring into space with a blank expression.

I feel like I'm finally getting my writing mojo back. I had to stop midway through shaving my head this morning so I could write down amazing ideas I had for specific problems I've been wrestling with in both Books 3 and 4.

I’ve since found out this is only if you don’t login to CapCut (which I don’t)

Thanks for the recommendation! I have Premiere Rush as part of my Adobe subscription but had never really used it much before. I'm trying it out right now but will keep YouCut in mind if Rush doesn't work out for me.

Wait, so... CapCut is suddenly putting a watermark on any videos we export unless we pay for Premium? And Premium is... 🧐 $25 a month?? Can we just go back to having the app banned instead?

I didn’t like the miniatures that came with my Marvel Dice Throne board game, so I’m making my own. The first set of characters is drying while the second prints. These models were designed by various creators—Legion, Hall of Heroes, C27, and Wicked3D have figures in this batch.

I'm used to flying Southwest and benefitting from their two free checked bags for carrying my books to signings. Now that they're getting rid of the free bags and likely raising prices overall, the likelihood that I'll be doing any book signings outside of Florida and Georgia has greatly decreased.

Trying to reset my TikTok algorithm today. Suddenly my entire FYP is videos from the cast of Buffy, and all my reading and writing content is gone. I do love me some BTVS, and that whole cast is delightful, but that's not really what I use my TikTok for!

2/ I'm all in favor of speaking with our money and protesting the oligarchs, but we need to know what's effective, who we're holding responsible, and who we're catching in the crossfire.

1/ Businesses boycotting AWS would hurt Amazon. Readers boycotting Kindle Unlimited would not. Independent authors are the ONLY ones who suffer when readers stop reading their books. Also, Andy Jassy is the CEO of Amazon; Jeff Bezos hasn't been since 2021.

Google made changes, and a bunch of my most-used Chrome browser extensions no longer work. Switching to Brave as my new browser only took a few clicks, and I have zero regrets.

2/ However I did it last time isn't working anymore, and I always spend at least a month poking at the story with different sticks until one of them makes it move.

1/ I'm very much a process-oriented person, but the sad truth is that I don't really have a reliable process for writing a book. Every time I start a new project, it feels like it's the first time all over again.

Don't buy my books tomorrow, February 28. I'm in full support of the global economic blackout. Feel free to buy my books and everybody else's again on Saturday (and please do!), but hang onto your money tomorrow.

No joke, getting a new book shipment is Author Gym time 🤣

010 0

Jason Dorough @jasondoroughauthor.bsky.social · 24/02/2025

Update! All books in the shipment were correctly my own books, and there were no Onyx Storms. 15% of the copies were damaged this time, which is actually a pretty great improvement over the usual damages.

Ah, yes! The anxiety of receiving a huge new shipment of your own books. Will they all be fine? Will they all be damaged? Will half be fine? Will a quarter of them be Onyx Storm? WE'LL SOON FIND OUT!

I woke up in the middle of the night trying to remember how many seasons Tom Hiddleston was Doctor Who. It was only after I was fully awake this morning that I realized I was thinking about season 1 of Loki 🤦‍♂️

I just finished reading Golden Son, the sequel to Red Rising, and it's fantastic. I normally skip around and don't read series straight through, but I'm going to have to jump right into the third book immediately.

I’ve only had time to begin one run on it but think I’m going to like it! It’s more different than the previous ones than I anticipated, so it’s taking me longer to wrap my head around the new changes than I’d thought it would.

As promised, I made a video giving my thoughts about why I think my book signing this past weekend at MegaCon went so well. It's now posted on my TikTok and Instagram, and you can find both of those in my links!

My MegaCon book signing went really, really well, and I'm thinking about making a video about the things I think made it such a success. Is that something people would be interested in hearing?

Thank you so much to everybody who came to my table at the MegaCon signing today. I had a fantastic time, saw great friends I don’t see often enough, and sold more books in 2 hours than I thought possible. I was too busy to take many pics, but here are the few I managed to get, solo & with friends!

Reminder if you're at #MegaCon that I'll be signing books tomorrow (Saturday, February 8) from 1-3pm Eastern in the Book Nook area (Room N329) on the second floor of the convention center. Come find me, and I look forward to meeting you!

That feeling when you've trained yourself to sign your name in your book-signing style and accidentally start signing legal documents and other non-book things that way. People are just going to think I'm extremely extra.

I'll be signing books at MegaCon in Orlando this coming Saturday, February 8, from 1-3pm Eastern. My signing is in N329 (second floor of the convention center, north concourse). If you're there, stop by and say hi! Map and details are in the images.

If you're in the US and are interested in directly reaching out to your House or Senate representatives and don't know where to start, I highly recommend the 5 Calls app (link in the first comment). I used it today to call my reps and plan to make use of it regularly in the future.

It's a highly regarded South Korean thriller movie from 2003. I'd heard about it for a long time and finally got around to watching it when I saw it was on Netflix tonight. Let's just say it was an... unsettling watch 😅

The comments on my regular videos are all great, and I suspect those are the ones my actual subscribers see. I think the shorts just get shot out to anybody and everybody, so that's probably where all the garbage comes from!

010 0

Jason Dorough @jasondoroughauthor.bsky.social · 26/01/2025

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I have pretty thick skin when it comes to getting trollish comments to or about me. I only really get upset when I see comments going after OTHER people 😅 So I'm not letting these get to me at all. I'm mostly just sharing this to warn other folks!

110 0

Jason Dorough @jasondoroughauthor.bsky.social · 26/01/2025

Thank you! I appreciate that so much! The bad comments themselves aren't really bothering me, as I've developed a thick skin after all these years of posting content. I'm more just annoyed that YouTube doesn't have a better algorithm and keeps showing my stuff to toxic randos.

110 0

Jason Dorough @jasondoroughauthor.bsky.social · 26/01/2025

I've always had good comments from my regular YouTube videos, but the shorts have always drawn in comments from the lowest common denominators. I'm considering just turning off comments on my future shorts, but I'd hate to do that, because I do occasionally get some good ones.

000 0

Jason Dorough @jasondoroughauthor.bsky.social · 26/01/2025

The YouTube Shorts comments are a cesspool. I suspect it’s because the algorithm is terrible and sends videos out willy nilly. I posted my second short today, announcing my signing at MegaCon, and this was the first comment, within 2 minutes:

My only real complaint (and it's a minor one) is that they inserted some narrative pauses and additional spoken dialogue into the middle of a bunch of the songs, so the original versions' momentum and impact get lost or at least changed a little. But I still enjoyed it a lot!

I finally saw the Wicked movie tonight, and, as someone who once cosplayed as the Joel Grey version of the Wizard with a group of friends at a comic convention, I give it a thumbs up!

Thank you! The comment I got felt like it was just some random person making random threats, so I don’t think it was anything really about me or actually targeted at me. I reported them, so hopefully that’s the end of it.

Rite of passage-- I posted my first YouTube short a couple of hours ago, and I already got a 💀 threat comment! First one of those I've received since I started doing this public-author thing, and I'm not scared or worried about it or anything. It's just annoying that existence in 2025 is like this.
