My writing has improved quite a bit. I learnt many tips and tricks, especially when I'm writing for media pieces like articles, features, or even a release. Looking forward to our last class. See everyone there! #UCWCOMM205

Don't have any tips to add, but he gives some great tips when it comes to practicing our presentations. The one that stood out the most to me was tip #3 to focus on 1 or 2 improvements at a time. Focusing on too many can cause us to poorly develop on each. #UCWCOMM205

1) Features are long, while news articles get straight to the point. 2) Features can be ever-green, while news tends to become irrelevant. 3) Features are more for entertainment or promotion, while news is more to inform. #UCWCOMM205

We've learnt quite a lot this semester, but the two things I'll walk away with is to apply the 3 c's to my writing and the different ways to write news articles and releases. #UCWCOMM205

I would start the article with an eye-catching fact or a story from a student's experience. I would use some statistical data but not too much to distract the audience. Interview professionals who've done research in the area. Looking for them on social media or research databases. #UCWCOMM205

If I were to write a feature, I would write on 'Jonestown Massacre' for an audience of 'true crime enthusiasts' with the purpose of 'entertaining and informing.' My hook would be, "(word limit, look below)" and I would try to publish my work in a 'true crime magazine or blog site." #UCWCOMM205

Yes, the lead is engaging, as it answers the 5W1H. The target audience, of course, is Canadian consumers who want to know more about what they're buying. We can even further narrow this down to those consumers have iPhones, due to the being only on the iOS platform. #UCWCOMM205

We've all got nerves when it comes to public speaking, but we shouldn't let that come in our way. I take a deep breath, calm my mind and get going. The words come out and it's usually good. Sometimes there's a slip up which catches me, but I just pause and continue. #UCWCOMM205

A) Mic Check ❌ You should deal with the technical details before, as something as simple as a mic check might distract your audience and set a tone you don't want. But hey, sometimes things don't work out. You check it, and it still happens. If so, go on with your speech. #UCWCOMM205

Yes, I agree. Goals allow us to understand what reaction we want or expect from the audience. Based on those same goals, we can clarify how we can achieve them. You can have multiple goals with a speech, but it's necessary to limit them so you don't confuse your audience. #UCWCOMM205

I'd hit the audience with a hook they can't resist. It's like the first line of a book; you need to make sure your words will pull the audience in. Adding some storytelling never hurt anyone. Maybe some comedy or an oddly fun fact. It's up to you and, well, who your audience is. #UCWCOMM205

Preparation is key. You don't need to be an expert in what you're presenting, but you should have a basic grasp. Practice and perfect your style. It's not a 1 size fits all. I don't have a particular presenter I look up to, but I've learned to develop my skills by actually doing. #UCWCOMM205

Tim uses many techniques throughout the Ted Talk. He starts with an anecdote, carefully crafting his story to be relatable (guilty here) and engaging by adding comedic relief. He breaks down the concept into a visual example accessible to all audiences. (the monkey exists) #UCWCOMM205

Yes! It's easy to want to talk, but active listening is difficult. When you're actively listening to what the other person is saying, and analyze each remark, you'll be able to create new questions which guide the interview. Although difficult, it's something I strive to improve on. #UCWCOMM205

Being prepared for the topic or person you will interview is truly important. Preparation gives you an understanding of what to ask and how to react to answers, allowing for the smooth flow of the interview. You don't want to be taking time to think of a question during the interview. #UCWCOMM205

All the tips mentioned in the video are great. However, the one that stood out to me was 'record faithfully.' When we write for news and work with information, we must ensure the person's message is correctly interpreted. There's no space for bias, only truth. #UCWCOMM205

"BE NEWSWORTHY!" Not everything a business does needs to be a press release; a simple social media post or an email can do it. If you're hiring people or promoting your business, a social media or job posting will do. Only major events with impact should have a press release. #UCWCOMM205

Duolingo! I don't know what their marketing team runs on, but I'm always invested when a Duo ad pops up. It's always something curious, unexpected, and shocking. They don't follow trends; they tend to make them. #UCWCOMM205

The ad targets businesses or business professionals on X (formerly Twitter), offering them the chance to join an Advertising workshop. There is a clear call to action, even mentioning when the event will be. It's a good ad. #UCWCOMM205

I don't have another step to add, but I'd say the most important step is setting goals for your PR Campaign. Setting these goals lets us know where we want our campaign to go and what results we expect. #UCWCOMM205

The ad is quite effective as it has: - a CTA 👀, - creates a sense of urgency (until August 21st 🗓️), - indicates benefit (free 6-pack bun 🍞). #UCWCOMM205

The target audience are parents (those with kids between 3.5 years to 9 years). The purpose is to promote MyGym's services. We can make this more effective by having a: - more appealing graphics - better and more visible CTA - button or link the customer might click #UCWCOMM205

There are quite a lot of things we should keep in mind when writing a newsletter. I'd go with - a captivating subject line, and an attractive lead - keeping it short (attention is less these days) - consider your audience - 3C's are always a given. #UCWCOMM205

Kates comment on Tip #5 really stood out for me. She agreed that from time to time you need to test the waters with different CTA's. You never know when your tried and true method stops working. A/B testing is a great way to get results without changing everything over night. #UCWCOMM205

It was a great class last week. We learned that good writing is about considering who the audience is, the medium and format we will use, the voice and style, and finally, the purpose of the content. We touched on why we should be careful of intensifiers and redundancies. #UCWCOMM205

Writing for media and academics is very different. When writing for media, our content must be conversational and easy to understand. Academic writing is formal and uses jargon that only industry specialists may understand. We can put this down to their intended audience. #UCWCOMM205

It's true that a good lead can make a difference in someone reading your piece, and as @npr.org points out, writing one isn't as easy as it looks. My favourite of them all though, is the Anecdotal lead. Nothing beats good storytelling. #UCWCOMM205

Hey! Since I've come to Canada, my main source has been the CBC for written articles. When it comes to video coverage though, I tend to also watch CTV or Global. I find that there are many options, but I stick to the few I started with. #UCWCOMM205

Just found a gem of British comedy. "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" is a classic tale with a twist. Imagine the script is set, the actors in place, rehearsed and ready... then everything goes wrong, on purpose that is. If you want a good laugh, give it a watch. #UCWCOMM205 youtu.be/T7CAEjWIVh0?...

Grammerly is my go to tool. I know while I’m in the middle of creating content, my mind works to put the words to the page. However, I may misspell a few words, forget one or two punctuations. It’s good to have an editor up your sleeve. #UCWCOMM205

I’ve always been intrigued by the worlds Neil Gaiman creates. One I’d recommend everyone to read is Coraline. Even though the movie is great, reading it is a whole other experience. As for the textbooks, can’t escape that… but I find picking up a book once in a while refreshes me. #UCWCOMM205
