He was not bad looking. He smiled at you. He leaned in — because it is loud, only because it is loud — and said something like hey, having a good time?

And you said: thanks, I’m not—

And then something. Gay. Into guys. Like that. Some version of the sentence that needed, urgently, to contain the information that you are not.

He nodded and drifted back into the crowd and that was that.

I want to sit with you here for a moment.

He asked if you were having a good time.
That was the whole question. It was, if we're being precise, an invitation to dance together and maybe talk, the most ordinary social transaction that happens at parties, the thing humans have been doing since there were fires to dance around.

You could have said great music or I just got here or do you come to these often or literally anything that acknowledges him as a person extending a small ordinary kindness.
