📈 For the upcoming year, my allegiance will now be with the Steelers, as here in 2025 I'm building a team of smart creatives in Pittsburgh to lead innovation for SR Measure and Stockpile Reports.

Eagles win! 🦅 Of course I had to honor them with a stockpile, given that I spend most of my time thinking about ways to improve or invent stockpile measurement techniques via 3D computer vision and machine learning. 😄

🎨 Generative AI was used as effective entertainment. During one of the intermissions, random fans in the crowd were turned into bobblehead characters. It was fun and well done! Let’s Go Pens! 🐧

🚀 That puck moves fast! With shots traveling 25-45 m/s, I wonder what an augmented reality UI could look like that leverages event cameras (cameras that offer high-speed, asynchronous, per-pixel updates for intensity changes). Though, the camera might track the puck faster than our eyes can keep up!

🏒 Hockey + AI ? I attended my first @penguinsnhl.bsky.social hockey game this weekend - it was a lot of fun! Two things that surprised me:

🔬 I’ve used hillshade before to emphasize elevation changes in terrain, and so I could mentally visualize what it would look like to turn it into an animation. However, nothing beats actually doing the experiment and seeing the results.

💡 Sometimes I get a random idea that I just have to try, either because I think it sounds fun, because I think it could help our business, or because I think I might learn something new (or more typically it’s all three!).

Jared Heinly @jaredheinly.bsky.social · 10/01/2025
🤔 What does it look like when you continuously vary the sun azimuth in a hillshade visualization of a stockpile site?

🏢 Here in 2025 I'm opening an office in Pittsburgh and building a team to tackle and lead new innovation for SR Measure and Stockpile Reports, with key roles around mobile development, UX design, 3D computer vision, and image-based machine learning.

📏 Can you spot the tape measure that was being used as a test to manually verify the scale?

❄️ This past week I got out of my office and measured some snow-covered piles (one of the environmental challenges of being in Pittsburgh over the winter). 📱 The animation above shows a sparse point cloud that was computed on an iPhone 16 within seconds for one of those piles.

❓ The answers aren't in the office... 🥾 One of the core principles that we believe in at EveryPoint.io is that we need to get out and get our boots muddy in order to truly understand our customers and build a better product.

Slightly related: During my holiday break I really enjoyed reading (or re-reading) How Google Works. Lots of inspiring thoughts for how to build a team, product, and company.

🏝️ Benefit of vacation: It’s important to get away and do things other than work. Downside: When writing my first line of C++ for 2025 I tried to end it with a period (as if it were a sentence) instead of using a semicolon. 😬

RANSAC is a powerful tool. There may be more up-to-date resources out there, but for me, the USAC paper by Rahul Raguram et al. is a great overview of the many kinds of modifications or improvements that can be made: rahulraguram.com/assets/pdf/R...

Oh yeah, that's a fun one! In previous work I had cases where landmarks would undergo restoration for several years, and so there was a set of photos that had the same scaffolding around the structure. That was more of a long-term temporal change of the scene, compared to what you're showing here.

What's something fun, interesting, or surprising that went into making some of your work possible, but that most people might not be aware of?

That's awesome! My first foray into 3D was also maze exploration. I tried to do ray casting on a TI-83 graphing calculator, but it was way too slow. That encouraged me to learn my first "real" programming language (Java) so that I could write something that would run on our family's PC.

Given the option, I would choose both. Yes, both of them will contain noise, but each one provides some sort of value in assessing a paper's contributions.

Oh, I'm sure you're probably fine. I had a different cooler, and I think it had some specific instructions for how tight it expected to be. As long as you followed the instructions for yours, you should be perfect.

Congratulations! 🎉 That definitely is the scariest part of assembling a computer. For me, it was the amount of force that I had to use to fully tighten the heatsink in place. I thought I was going to break the motherboard!

Seconded. I love your idea for having two documents: one sparse for live presentation, and one with more detail for further study. Though, depending on the presentation topic and goal, I imagine the second document could be the course textbook or research paper that's being presented.

🍬 This morning I was like a kid in a candy store I had a ton of fun at Pittsburgh Robotics Discovery Day. It was inspiring to see so many applications, and meet the people behind them. It's a reminder that computer vision and AI are just tools. 🛠️ What matters is how we use them!
