📷 Sunrise from yesterday, with Mt Rainier on display.
Orange sun split by horizontal threads of darker clouds fills the space between black silhouettes of branches, with a large mountain shadowed on the horizon.

She's so sweet, folks. I need to help her up into bed now because her hips aren't doing so well, but I would lift her into bed for a thousand years if it meant I got to have a thousand years with her <3
I've pulled up the sheet, revealing Tipsy's face looking up to me, big brown eyes and age-whitened eyebrows which have only sharpened her resting look of anxiety over the years.

#WIPSnips "Handle" from FotF#2, Sink or Swim AL has just gotten done yelling at the Captain, and while it wasn't really planned it doesn't go how they'd feared - nor, though, does it go how they'd hoped…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book two, Sink or Swim:
"I turned sharply to leave, and he didn’t say anything behind me, but I didn’t feel triumphant so much as I just felt ill, my stomach roiling and blood rushing through me. I stomped over to the door, grabbed at the handle, and pulled on it.

It didn’t open.

“It’s a future that you’re walking away from, Al.”

He didn’t sound angry and that was such a slap in the face. He should’ve been. I was. I was angry and I was yelling at him about it and I was just some snot-nosed little coalboy shouting at the Captain of the ship, and he should’ve been furious and flying into a rage, and the fact that he wasn’t made it feel like I wasn’t even worth that to him. I wasn’t worth protecting the way the other lads were, I wasn’t worth getting angry at the way Molly was.

I wasn’t worth anything."

#WIPSnips "Frontier" from FotF#2, Sink or Swim The Compass is primarily a charting ship, so she's plenty used to sailing the edges of the map…but airborne. In the water? Well, she's not as well-adapted…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book two, Sink or Swim:
"A circle in red was out in a blank section of the map, with a rough indication of the island we’d found as well, along with notes of its latitude and longitude and the height of the mountain’s peak – numbers I recognized even if I couldn’t necessarily decipher them. A solid red line led from it to the southeast, dodging more northward or more southward to avoid islands once it made it back to illustrated sections of the map – areas of the known world, rather than the less-fully explored frontiers which we tended to frequent. The line carried all the way back to the coast, ending roughly near the port we’d left from, Calaires, at a seaport which was called Valnellis.

I pointed at a red X partway along the proposed route. “What’s that?”

  “That’s where we sink.”"

#WIPSnips "Box" from FotF#2, Sink or Swim Trying to make their way back to land from the island where they've been stranded, storms leave the crew unable to take a reference from the stars and sun, meaning they're left with just doing math and hoping. Math: final vestige of the hopeless XD
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book two, Sink or Swim:
"With each passing day, our own mark on the map became more and more vague. When the sun was out, we were an X, a small cross with the Compass’ position being the intersection of the lines. After a day of dead reckoning, we were a small square, a box about the size of a gambler’s six sided die. After a week and a half of the same, we were a loose circle the size of an inkpot, and one drawn in an increasingly hesitant hand each day.

With each passing day, we came closer and closer to the area of the map marked as potential extensions of those islands. Considered impassible.

On the twelfth day without sun, the circle of our estimated position was so large that it overlapped with the previous day’s. It felt so pointless at that moment to be using a map at all, if we could have been in the same place yesterday and today. Felt like no headway was being made, like none could be made."

#WIPSnips "Thorn" from FotF#5, Seen or Unseen (working title) AL's discovered a creature which they've been assured is an unthinking beast. After a close encounter that had AL fearing for their life, they're not sure what to think…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book five, Seen or Unseen (working title):
"We moved at the same time. Opposite directions, away from each other, and I couldn’t say at the end of it whether it did have a mind.

There were stories of lions with thorns in their paws. Did the lion think?

Did it matter?"

#WIPSnips "Twist" from FotF#2, Sink or Swim Molly and the Captain are negotiating, and Molly has a particular caveat for her aid. The two of them still don't get along, and being stranded on an island? Well, it isn't helping. XD
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book two, Sink or Swim:
"As she started to leave, just as I was about to turn away and follow her, she spoke again. “Al will be staying in my quarters. With me.”

I froze, halfway through the turn, as I saw the expression which shifted over his face. The way his eyes met mine, and held them. He seemed to know most things aboard his ship, at least generally – knew enough to know my name, at least, and supposedly how long I’d been around.

He must have heard the rumours.

It seemed everyone had spread them, coalboys and Corpsmen and more, all chatting away like sewer rats about how Al and the Faekyn were getting up to all manner of sheet-twisting activities, and I was sure the Captain couldn’t have avoided them all. I felt as if the blood was draining from my face as he looked at me, as all the words I’d heard called out from doorways and whispered behind my back all piled up on me from the shadows of my memory.

“A most… unusual request,” the Captain began, but before he could say more, Molly was retorting.

“Not a request at all, in fact,” she spat, every sharp syllable snapping from her tongue and teeth."

If my artist keeps turning out stuff like this I may not survive to see final publication. Seriously. I know Bluesky is gonna compress the hell out of this but just imagine the detail that's there past the compression XD
A crisp lineart drawing of a Faekyn woman getting out of a carriage; she has a flat, slitted nose and curly hair, and is wearing a smug expression, and her wings are currently folded behind herself and hidden. She's wearing luxurious robes trimmed with fur. Her carriage is pulled by Griffins, which look back with disdain from the left side of the picture. A gathered crowd of humans watches with a mixture of intrigue, distaste, anger, and suspicion, including AL, the POV character of the book, wearing dirty coveralls and a thick wool shirt from their work in the boiler room. In the background, arches and walls and buildings of the city can be seen.

Partial detail from an inline illustration for Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight, by me, Jared Goring. Art by AngryRob.

#WIPSnips "Dash" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Think this has been posted before, or at least in part, but I like it anyway. AL would take offence at being called an optimist…but they are though XD
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"“Hope can be very dangerous,” she murmured, looking down at her worktable as she picked up a crystal of some sort between tweezers and soldered it into place in a little metal socket. “It can be dashed, and leave one bereft in the aftermath.” She took a deep breath, her nostril slits closing for a few seconds before she let it out in a sigh. “Perhaps it is better not to hope, and spare oneself.”

For some reason, it sounded to me a lot more like she was talking to herself than me.

With a shrug, I slid into the workbench beside her and took up a few pieces in hand. “Yeah, maybe. I’ll tell you though, I’ve been in a few grim places, and I think I might say hope’s all gets us through sometimes. The times it gets dashed might hurt, sure, but the ones who give it up… well, they’re the ones I feel really sad for.”"

#WIPSnips "Grand" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight AL deals with the choice between survival today and survival tomorrow - and it's not much of a choice, is it? Gotta survive today to even make it to tomorrow…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"I watched her leave the shop in awe. I’d never get that old.

Never even dreamed of it, certainly never hoped. I dreamed of greatness, sure, but never age - if I was going to do something grand, I knew it would need to be soon. She’d gone through twenty-seven coalboys, the Compass had - twenty-seven of my fellows who’d died in or on or around her. The canvaslads had lost around a dozen, mostly just falling free of their lines although rumour had it one had hanged himself in the nest of ropes they slept in up in the envelope. The planksmen had even lost four or five. Wasn't as sure of any of the others' numbers.

It wasn’t a safe job. It was just one that kept me fed, clothed, sheltered. Alive, for now at least, but I knew it would never let me get old."

#WIPSnips "Substitute" (using "alternative" as an- erm, well, you know XD) from FotF#2, Sink or Swim Attempting to return from an island, AL and Captain Yann have a discussion about routes. Gallows humour, anyone?
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, Book two, Sink or Swim:
"“Just thread those mountains,” I pointed to a string of protrusions from the ocean, north and a bit eastward of Calversman’s Island. Three of them, large, with an area northeast of them circled and annotated.

“Those are the ones,” he nodded.

“The ones labeled ‘traversal impossible’, sir?”

A dark chuckle slipped between his lips. “Only says considered impossible, as a matter of fact.”

Technically, he was correct, even. That was the note on the circle – “more islands spotted northeast but unmapped. Location inhospitable. Storms. Traversal considered impossible.”

I stared at the sheet, shaking my head, and he must’ve seen me.

“There’s no alternative,” his jaw tensed for a moment, eyes darting over the map. “Further north than those islands, winds are turbulent this time of year and we’d be lucky to avoid a high speed introduction to high seas. Further north than that, we’re lucky if our mainline doesn’t freeze solid before it even gets to the boilers.”"

#WIPSnips "Keep" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Sometimes the line between "us" and "them" is a cordon. Sometimes it's a shield.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"“Not you. Them.” Her eyes flashed to mine briefly, and they looked angry but it didn’t frighten me. The anger wasn’t directed at me, anyway.

It was kind of nice to have a distinction drawn between us, actually. For the first time. Previously it had always been a cordon, a fence - the Corps gets nice food but the coalboys don’t despite the fact they keep the ship running. The Corps gets nice uniforms but the coalboys don’t because they’ll ruin them. It had always been something that held me back, that cut me out.

For the first time, though, “them” felt like something that held away something bad. Like a fence maybe, but one that I was on the right side of."

#WIPSnips "Round" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight AL and Molly are stranded on an island, looking to find the pirates who are responsible for the stranding. Injured, fatigued, half-drowned, and with Molly still in manacles… AL really isn't looking forward to mountain climbing. XD
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"I stared. The mountain was tall enough that the Compass might’ve needed to divert course depending on her cruise altitude. Tall enough that it could’ve meant the wreck of an airship, tall enough that I imagined clouds might swirl round its peak if there were any nearby.

“I really hope we find them before that,” I murmured, dragging us both another step forward."

#WIPSnips "Out" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Everything is just something to do until you die…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"He laughed aloud, snorting, and then started to cough. With a nervous glance to the foreman, I wrapped an arm around his shoulders and ushered him along back to the stairs which would take us belowdecks. If we were slow because we were joking around, we’d likely get both whipped and charged for the time delay, and between the two I think the wage lost was worse. A lashing would heal, the sting of it fading away, but hunger could last you forever. I don’t think a coalboy’d ever been whipped to death, but if he never earned his way out of his position?

Well, there was a reason they weren’t called coal men. Wouldn’t make it that long - not that they would’ve been any good at it anyway, men were too big to fit into the tight spaces in the machinery anyway, but the point still stood.

I could be grateful for the job, but still realize that if I didn’t get out it would be the death of me. That was true of everything, though. Everything was just something to do until you died.

Different things just meant you’d get different amounts of time first."

#WIPSnips "Draw" from FotF#6, currently untitled Molly has gotten a little (or a lot) aroused, but unfortunately needs to leave for a meeting. She'll live, though. Probably.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book six, currently untitled:
"As I did, though, and my fingers brushed against her skin, they seemed to draw a sharp groan out of her throat. Sharp enough that I recoiled, apologizing by reflex. “Sorry!”

“As am I.” Molly pressed her hands firmly against the wall for a moment, leaning forward against it with a loud groan. “Sorry that I cannot miss this meeting lest I ruin my recently stated timeline, because as stated, I would much rather- do any one of many things.”

“Yeah I thought you were still a bit distracted,” I muttered, her wings drawing my eyes as they all but exploded in another flurry of movement.

“No, I am intensely and thoroughly and I suppose it would be even apt to say violently and all but entirely distracted, but- I will survive.” She swallowed heavily, briefly and sharply shaking her head before appending, “I suspect.”"

#WIPSnips "Platform" from FotF#5, Seen or Unseen AL and Molly have had to take up residence with a group living underneath a railroad trestle. Molly isn't used to communal living amongst humans, and she may have gotten a thing or two wrong as a result… and with no language in common, either!
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book five, Seen or Unseen (working title):
"I heard the wife saying something, or maybe shouting it. Hard for me to tell, as they sounded a little similar. Some languages just sounded a bit shouty, so I wasn’t too worried.

Did become sharply curious and at least a little worried when I heard Molly’s voice replying, though.

“I don’t- I- apologize, not that it matters as you can’t comprehend me anyway and I could say any words I wish with an equal effect on swaying your mindset, wardrobe banana horse farm- Fates I just-”

“Molly?”

She cut herself off with a gasp, her voice rising as she called out to me and I tried to clamber over toward that platform as quickly as possible. The little footbridges that had been built felt a little wobbly to me, so I stuck to the thick timbers of the rail bridge instead, leaning to stretch from one to the next.

“Al - Al I fear I’ve caused a misunderstanding. Please help.”"

In the end, I’m not even sure it was me that swung the blade, not really. I think it might’ve been the Fates themselves making my arm raise up and then plunge right down again. Didn’t even hesitate, not at all.

#WIPSnips "Warmth" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight AL and Molly's relationship starts out a little rockier, a little more contentious - due to disparate circumstances - but even there, there are seeds of what it grows into…
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"“What’s it feel like? Having magic?” I glanced at her with a raised eyebrow.

“Could I ask you what it feels like to not have it?” She didn’t look up from the seam she was working on. Seemed uncomfortable, but then a lot of people did when up against someone who was missing something they had. Folk with legs got uncomfortable around amputees, the well-off got anxious face to face with the poor.

Sometimes, at least. The ones that had consciences, that had beating working hearts in their chests. I guess it was good she was one of them, as opposed to one of the ones who wouldn’t care, and I wasn’t exactly glad that it was making her uncomfortable but I’d been uncomfortable plenty. Plenty of nights with no food and no warmth, and those both added up to no comfort either.

Maybe it made me feel a little good to be spoiling some of her easy comfort. I’m not sure it should’ve but it did."

#WIPSnips "Smell" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Molly's tried to pay AL with coin worth more than they probably would've earned in their whole life. AL is - to say the least - startled XD
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"“Your life is worth far more than some coinage,” she hissed through sharp teeth, but I shook my head fervently with a laugh.

“Not if you ask the Corps or the Captain or any of the officers, Miss, or anyone groundside either, honest - it’ll just, it’ll put too big a target on my back, I’d be too scared to hold on to it and besides, what would I even buy with this? What, ten thousand pork pies? They’d go bad long before I had a chance to eat ‘em Miss, and I don’t have a larder to store ‘em anyway-”

“Ten thousand pork-” Miss Molly shook her head with a laugh - she had so many of them it seemed, so many different laughs, and they could mean so many different things. “That’s… absurd, Al, that is absurdity in its purest I think, but… alright.” She held out a hand and I hastily dropped the coin into it, wiping off my hands as if it would leave a trace on me that the officers would be able to smell.

“Sorry Miss,” I shook my head forcefully, “I don’t like to be rude and deny, it’s just- the officers always can tell who’s been snagging, and they’re none too kind about it.”"

#WIPSnips "Guide" AL's confronted with the racism of the soldiers, as directed at Molly - a woman of Fae descent and possessing wings… She refuses to rise to the bait.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"The first soldier was seemingly unhappy with her lack of response, and waved away his fellows’ comments with a scowl. “No no, you see - you see, what that’s about,” he explained loudly, glaring straight toward the figure at the bannister, “is about the fact that they ain’t fucking human, are they? Don’t react the same. It’s that they’re bugs, aren’t they? They are - look at the wings and all, it’s obvious, ain’t it?”

His fellows nodded, murmuring agreements, and I realized that while the Faekyn wasn’t reacting she also wasn’t moving. Even her dragonfly-like wings at her back hadn’t flickered for a few moments, and I started to watch them more closely as the soldier’s hand on my shoulder guided me quickly across the deck. She just stared into her telescope, or maybe straight through it, as still as a statue."

Hey it's still technically #Mermay so here have a free, short (~3k words), safe for work sapphic story about a mermaid and a sailor whose father has warned her not to get too close to the water… jaredgoring.com/at-the-edge/
Screenshot of black text on a white background:
"“Don’t go near the edge,” he’d start, and I’d cut him off before he could get any further (although he never would get any further).

“-I could trip, and fall in, I know,” I’d answer with a roll of my eyes, and every time he’d shake his head with a chuckle.

“No,” he’d murmur. “That’s not why.”"

#WIPSnips "Silent" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Look, attempting thought doesn't guarantee that thought will happen. XD AL and Molly have a talk about invisible oppression! Fun!
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"“The Embassy is granted wide purview for the power they wield, but it’s largely about… perception. There are obvious concessions granted to us Faekyn while the reality lurks far more in the shadows - tell me, with all of the Embassy’s power, when was the last time you saw a Faekyn city? An outpost, even? Tell me as well, you’ve got your Regent and other human nations have their Empresses or Tsars or whatever else, but have you ever heard of a Faekyn ruler? King, Queen, or otherwise?”

I was silent for several moments, chewing my fish as I thought. Not really about what she was saying - those answers were easy enough: never, never, and not in the slightest. What I thought about instead was how to phrase it.

“Never, never, and not in the slightest, Miss,” I replied, resorting to simplicity. “But then again, I’ve never seen our Regent either.”"

#WIPSnips "Insect" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Surprisingly with people using insectoid descriptors as slurs for Faekyn (due to their wings), there are only a few instances of 'insect' specifically! Here's one from a trip to the boiler room: Molly has an adverse reaction.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"The Captain and the guards didn’t seem to notice, they just strode forward into the boiler room. Miss Molly took dreamlike steps, her eyes drifting slowly around - her hands rose to do the same, reaching out and touching and batting at things that weren’t there. Not quickly, not manic, not as if she was seeing some sort of insect or pest that remained invisible to us.

I’d seen a man in the alleys once, drugged out past the ends of his own wits. Had seen plenty I suppose, but one in particular sprung to mind - many were frantic, batting at fleas that may or may not’ve been there, but there was one who reminded me of her in that moment. He’d kept talking about the butterflies, how gorgeous they were, and he had moved in a way that was maybe a little similar to Miss Molly at that moment - in the way that an infant toddling is similar to a parent’s purposeful stride. Which is to say, hardly at all, but still."

#WIPSnips "Meet" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Molly's had a bit of a rough emotional time, and AL tries to help find a new and lighter topic of conversation. Sometimes being a bit bumbling can bring some brightness… but also AL really cannot say her name.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"For a brief moment, I paused, trying to recall what it had been that the Captain had introduced her as. “Marluh… Cart… um…”

“Mollekartradrædreyunni.” She slid into the bench, picking up her soldering iron again.

  “Mollycartara-”

“Mollekartradrædreyunni,” she repeated, softly, humming the word like it was a song or a laugh in and of itself. It was a damn sight better than crying and shouting at the very least, and brought a little smile to my lips. Made my own fears and angers and frustrations easier to ignore, as well, and it might’ve been mind magic but I mightn’t’ve cared if it was.

“Molla-carta-dray… de, um,” I shook my head with a huffed sigh as she laughed. “See, Miss? Just not cut out for it, clearly.”

When I got a pair of the pieces held up again, she made her final adjustments and started to solder, her narrow teeth glinting through a smile for a silent moment or two. Her eyes flicked up to meet mine for an instant. “Who’s to say I wouldn’t have difficulty with your name, though, hmm?”

  “It’s Al.”

She laughed. “No, you’re right, that really is quite an easy name!”

I joined her for a few seconds, chuckling."

The Birds: Flightless Edition
Screenshot of white text on black background, from Wikipedia entry on the "Emu War", a 1932 campaign against flightless birds which involved the Australian Military. Text reads as follows:
"In the days that followed, Meredith chose to move further south, where the birds were "reported to be fairly tame",[11] but there was only limited success despite his efforts.[1] By the fourth day of the campaign, army observers noted that "each pack seems to have its own leader now—a big black-plumed bird which stands fully six feet [1.8 m] high and keeps watch while his mates carry out their work of destruction and warns them of our approach".[12] At one stage, Meredith even went so far as to mount one of the guns on a truck, a move that proved to be ineffective, as the truck was unable to gain on the birds, and the ride was so rough that the gunner was unable to fire any shots.[1] By 8 November, six days after the first engagement, 2,500 rounds of ammunition had been fired.[6] The number of birds killed is uncertain: one account estimates that it was 50 birds,[6] but other accounts range from 200 to 500, the latter figure being provided by the settlers. Meredith's official report noted that his men had suffered no casualties, except for their dignity.[1]"

#WIPSnips "Rain" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight I thought a book set almost entirely inside of a ship wouldn't have it…but it does! Molly gets taken into custody under suspicion of [bad things]. AL…does not react well to her absence.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"They asked more questions, I did my best. I shoveled coal and hammered out a dent in one of the pipes. Someone said it had been four days, or five, I couldn’t really hear. Said I’d been in to help them half a dozen times and hadn’t been but one bit of help, and I couldn’t recall any further five instances, but he seemed certain. I twisted valves, careful to keep their gauges out of the red. They didn't believe me. I asked questions. The pistons on articulated sailfin two, left side, had to be recalibrated and the rain lashed at my face stinging as I squinted through it to see. The Corpsmen said I was hardly any help at all, and the Captain mused that hardly any help was better than none. They asked questions. I might have answered. Shift whistle blew. Shift whistle blew. I slept. I woke. It had been a week. It had been a day. A fortnight."

#WIPSnips "Pride" from FotF#1, Fight or Flight Sam and the Lieutenant had a… let's say "altercation" so as not to give spoilers, during which the Lt.'s boots were damaged. At crew call, the boots are fine…whilst Sam is emphatically not. Saxon, a coalboy-turned-Corps-cadet, is responsible.
Ebook screenshot from Flight of the Fates, book one, Fight or Flight:
"They hadn’t even mentioned Sam at the crew call, and all I could think about was those damn boots - and with what Saxon had said up above, knowing the Lieutenant didn’t even need to strain his own elbow. He’d just paid Sax to do it.

Saxon, who had even known Sam, but apparently didn’t care anymore. Didn’t care or didn’t know. I guess when they’d stuck that blue pin in him, they’d popped whatever pride or decency he’d ever had - I remembered him as a kid still, because it hadn’t been that long ago, but I guess it was true what they said. There wasn’t an age requirement to being an asshole, and Fates only knew what a child was gonna grow into.

  Those damned boots."
