Thoughts on #AEW Grand Slam Australia: Kenny Omega is one of my favorites of all time. Will Ospreay is one of the most exciting babyfaces in wrestling right now. Kyle Fletcher has been a revelation since turning heel. But Konosuke Takeshita might be THE wrestler for me right now. #wrestlesky

I'm feeling *great* about AEW at the moment. TV has been consistently strong for weeks and Grand Slam Australia hit with me. Revolution looks like it's going to have an out-of-this-world lineup. Tony Khan is back in the weeds doing what he does best. Keep it going!

While I’m at it with fantasy booking title matches, a one on one Brody King vs Takeshita for the International Title moves me. #aew #Wrestlesky

Kenny omega and Will Ospreay are gonna win at Grand Slam only to turn around and face each other at Revolution, aren’t they?? That’s how I’d book it, with the winner going to Dynasty to dethrone Mox. #AEW #WrestleSky

'stop complaining about short womens matches!! not all matches need to be long!! sometimes a short banger is better' ok but when women are only allowed to have short matches there's a structural issue. do you understand that

Watching #TheBrutalist in IMAX today. I love me some long movies and don’t feel bothered by extended runtimes but I’d be lying if I pretended having an intermission was anything but refreshing.

Finally catching up with Dynamite. That opening segment and brawl absolutely kicked ass. The cherry on top was noticing Kenny ignoring a guy in the crowd wearing a MAGA hat looking for a high five, that’s my GOAT. #AEW #WrestleSky

Their WrestleDream match feels as hard hitting and violent you can get without a stip, their Texas Death Match made me worried I was about to see the next tragedy in wrestling, but this one was the fulcrum for their character shifts. Hangman pushed over the edge, realizing he might not be able to——

All of this to say that I’m also weirdly more excited for Saturday night as well?? Hangman in a Texas Death Match, Big Tom vs Big Kazu, and weirdly enough I think I’m up for that 12 man tag match now?? #AEW

A wildly uneven episode of #Aew Dynamite. The entirety of Omega vs Cage and the post match was awesome, the Moné video ruled,Ricochet keeps leveling up, Swerve remains magnetic, I’m loving the Hurt Syndicate, it’s great to have Samoa Joe back, the Gauntlet kicked ass and Mox vs Hobbs delivered big.⬇️

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 16/01/2025

I expected a lot from Hobbs but Mox is showing he’s not phoning this shit in. He’s having a great night thus far. That’s probably why the story is so disappointing. He’s still an incredible wrestler, and the story has lost the plot regardless. #AEW

That match only got hotter and hotter with the crowd and needed at least 5 more minutes, maybe even a couple more competitors injected. They stopped before they could reach the heights of what the match could’ve been and I think the crowd was hungry for it.

I really hate DQ finishes. The Christian Cage/Hook feud isn’t working. But bringing back Samoa Joe gets a big thumbs up. Having Joe, Shibata and Hook as a unit again should be fun, but this show has given me WILD whiplash. #AEW

If you’re gonna chug along with the Mox reign, the very least I ask of you is to let the Death Riders go out and have fun singles matches. Cope vs Pac should be incredibly fun. #AEW

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 16/01/2025

Not to be a downer because the match and the angle that followed it fucked hard, but those being on the same program as Death Riders and Learning Tree shenanigans makes the bullshit stick out like a sore thumb. Hard shift here. #AEW #WrestleSky

There’s really no “Kenny Omega” style match, is there? The way he’s fighting here feels like a completely different performance from when he fought Gabe Kidd. The way he adjusts to his opponent’s style to be the perfect dance partner is remarkable #AEW #WrestleSky

It’s certainly the case for me. EVERY promotion getting mass praise right now has at least one thing (or more) that sucks. It’s harder to ignore when it’s the world title picture, that should be an easy top tier program on your show. Same when Shota was in the Main Event of WrestleKingdom.

When it comes to wrestling on TV, I’m pretty easy to please. But there are two things that have made me sit with my arms folded lately and had to just say “go on, impress me.” One of those things was Monday Night Raw as a whole, and tonight delivered huge. Need this energy to continue. #Wwe

You know what? I deleted a post I had about *that match announcement, and I think I’m gonna let it play out. Not because we shouldn’t be critical, but because I’ve loved way too much about #AEW since the C2 started to let that get in the way, and I don’t wanna get so riled up that I forget the good.

Started watching AEW from the beginning recently since I did not properly join the party until late ‘21/early ‘22. Just finished the 6th episode Dynamite, the go home for Full Gear. Saw that show closing brawl, hopped online only to see THAT match for next Saturday and shed a tear.

I’m not going to be jumping to conclusions, I don’t want to just assume they’ll wait for him to come back to dethrone Mox, and above all, I’m not gonna pretend there’s no way to redeem the story. But the response from fans indicates that Darby might not even benefit from winning the title.

I’d say these three, Swerve, Willow, Stat, and Toni all are in a rotating lineup of my “Big 3” of AEW. Elevating everything they do even when they aren’t booked in the best positions. The company is lucky to have so many aces.

One of those things about the world being driven by “it’ll stick around if it’s making someone ludicrous money” that deprives us of the “just in case/if I’m feeling up to it” kinda show.

Not to mention, Kenny made it clear he wants to be a regular feature on TV, wrestling as often as he can. Did people expect an instant match with Okada, Fletcher, Takeshita, Ospreay, etc?

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 09/01/2025

This marked two great episodes of Dynamite to kick off the year, but this episode highlighted something damning: the world title picture is far and away the worst thing going in this promotion, and that fact fucking stinks. #Aew

Kenny coming back and getting involved in Callis Family shenanigans wouldn’t have been my first choice, but a) having Ospreay come out to save him is genuinely compelling, and b) if this means we could get a Kenny v Takeshita rematch or Kenny v Fletcher, I’m so fucking here for it. #AEW

I don’t know if they were rushed for time, all I know is I could’ve watched this match go for double the time and know exactly where I would’ve cut from earlier in the show to make time for it. Love Cope, but that angle with Mox sure got the crowd cold.

I’m a huge Mox & Cope fan but this angle isn’t working:/ this crowd has been molten hot all night and only quieted down during the Death Riders stuff. Some sort of pivot or shake up needs to happen because this ain’t it.

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 09/01/2025

It’s significantly harder to ignore this when literally everything else is excelling right now. Hobbs is a welcome surprise and I wish the title scene was in better shape for him to be challenging Mox right now.

000

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 09/01/2025

The one (and I mean one) thing that can derail this show is if they don’t give Toni, Willow and Kris enough time. The pacing, the action, the angles being pushed, it’s all hitting strong. Make sure we’re also giving the women’s division the spotlight they deserve. #AEW

MJF vs Jarrett is good. It gets MJF back on the heel track when all people want to do is cheer for the Devil, and gives Jarrett the good babyface energy he needs for his retirement. I approve.

The Casino Gauntlet continues to deliver (I’m pretending the tag gauntlet didn’t happen.) And Hobbs winning feels out of nowhere in a way that feels fresh, not random. He deserves it, there should be a great match next week, and I genuinely don’t know where it’s going but want to see the next step.

Jared Douglas @jareddouglass00.bsky.social · 09/01/2025

So far, the kind of show that tells me I’ve lowered my standards(Dynamite has been solid, even very good lately with high peaks thanks to the C2, but there’s no denying how much better it’s needed to be.) Breakneck speed, action heavy and pushing intriguing angles with fan favs, this rules.
