A sea bird - seagullish - with reddish grey and white, black spot on the beak, and darker coloration on and behind the eye. It flies close to the sea water, and it looks like a grumpy middle-aged guy forced to go get groceries.

A passenger aircraft (ANA/Ibex) takes off from Itami airport. These are surprisingly difficult to get right. The distance means there's a lot of turbulent air to ruin your focus.

I'm *really* surprised just how good this is as a not-quite #macro for insects. Magnification is ~1:4 but that's at almost 1.5 meters, so it's easy to get close without scaring them off. This is so much fun! Ants and similar-size animals are probably a bit too […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

A dragonfly on a rope. Note how you can see the hexagonal structure of the eye in the reflections.

A bee is pulling nectar from a purple flower. You can get deep enough depth of field to get everything important in focus, despite the focal length.

A grasshopper on a wall. Nothing remarkable, but it's a fun image, and one I wouldn't have been able to get with a short macro.

Welcome to my parlour. A spider's nest with silk and the husks of previous dinners. Even something the size of this tiny spider is doable, with the right surrounding.

People. I love shooting people, though I don't do it so much these days (I need to write something about that). This lens can do isolated portraits really well. But usually I want to get in much closer and be in the scene, not apart from it. 4/6 #photography

A runner. This is a great example of when this focal length can really work for people shots.

A man in sunglasses is rising up on an escalator. This works as a composition, but could easily start to feel just a little stalkery.

A man is running along a subway station. The focal length isolates him and increases the perceived importance.

A photographer is sitting in a park, field-editing pictures on his laptop. This works as an image, but the fact that he's unaware I'm there is making it just a little creepy.

🧵 So I got a new toy: a #Pentax 300mm/f4 lens and a 1.4x extender. That's 420mm in 35mm terms; and 600mm with the extender. That's as long a lens as you'd ever want to use handheld, and way longer than anything I've used before. 1/6 #photography #camera
