this is an excerpt from the beastmaster channel in the balance just about combos, but i feel like square enix might have done a really bad job about explaining some of the complex systems it's working on, so imo it's really a matter of simple to pick up, but hard to master (full text in alt text)

Instinctual Combos
Chaining instinctual skills into a combo gives extra damage after each skill from the 2nd one onwards.
The extra damage uses the damage dealt by each skill as a base which is then multiplied by two numbers: the combo multiplier and the interaction multiplier.

The combo multiplier is straightforward and linearly increases as the length of the combo increases:
2-combo: 1.0x
3-combo: 1.5x
4-combo: 2.0x
5-combo: 2.5x
6-combo: 3.0x
7-combo+: 3.0x.

The interaction multiplier depends on the skill's affinity and how it interacts with the current affinity status. The interactions are named:
Infinitive: 2.0x
Intentional: 1.5x
Instinctual: 1.2x.

Infinitive happens when:
using a Sunstrider/Moonstalker skill during Moonstalker/Sunstrider affinity.
Intentional happens when:
using a skill with affinity clockwise on the compass from the current affinity
using a Sunstrider/Moonstalker skill without triggering Infinitive.
Instinctual happens when:
using a non-Sunstrider/Moonstalker skill without triggering Intentional.

A combo can be extended arbitrarily with Intentional and Instinctual Combos given the resources but can no longer be extended after an Infinitive Combo.
More specifically, performing an Instinctual Combo gives the affinity status of the last used skill and performing an Intentional Combo gives the Sunstrider/Moonstalker status. However, performing an Infinitive Combo does not produce an affinity status and also gives the Wavering Heart status which prevents a new affinity status from being produced.

beat the story and did my first coda mode clear on rift of the necrodancer (level 1 song, but still took me like 30+ minutes to do lmfao) i definitely do not think i will be able to 100% this game because there's a beat coda mode on the hardest difficulty with all random notes achievement

got given a god run by floor 2 and decided i wanted hush and delirium out of the way, lost my holy card almost immediately and was terrified until i found a deck of cards which generated two holy cards which wasn't even needed because delirium died in under 10 seconds lol
