Reader's Digest is only $10 for new subscribers. This is my pile of unread magazines going back to January. Somebody please talk me out of a new magazine subscription.

This is the second load of the hazardous waste left by my late brother. I also found used motor oil left in the garage by my nephew (he admitted that he left it there). Guys, please don't leave this for your elderly wives and mothers to deal with (or in this case, your 68 year old sister).

I've lived here almost 5 1/2 years and never once had my water service disrupted...until today. Oh yippee, a water main break. Looks like thousands are affected.

2026 garden update: for dinner tomorrow!

Janelle Downey @janelledowney.bsky.social · 11/07/2026

2026 garden update: if I'm not mistaken I finally have a pollinated zucchini blossom. Also the zinnias are glorious. Tomato harvest not so glorious; the squirrels must be starving since they're making off with lots of the green tomatoes.

2026 garden update: first squash blossoms! Both are male flowers of course, but two weeks ago I doubted I'd get any squash this year at all.

Bluesky; please welcome Wilma to Janelle's kitchen. She's a 50+ year old Sunbeam Mixmaster stand/handheld hybrid mixer who recently found herself ownerless and kitchen less. I've never owned a "real" mixer before, only a 43 year old) hand held mixer so Wilma is an upgrade for me

I adore these two photos of my Mom gardening in their yard circa 2002, when she was about 70. Even though she no could no longer maintain her flower garden she still loved to fill up pots with flowers. I wish they'd taken more photos of each other doing ordinary things. I miss them both terribly.

I've posted a garden update each of the last 2 June 11ths so here is my 6/11/26 update. The squash is definitely behind but I germinated more of them; I even have 2 cucumbers and onions! Tomatoes, peppers and zinnias are coming along. Pray for my herbs; the 🐿️ is determined to annihilate them.

My bedroom has only one northeast facing window, so for 10 or so months a year it's relatively dark and gloomy all day. But in May and June I get an hour of early morning sun, which makes me happy.

Took care of this disaster left behind by my late brother. None of this will go to the landfill. It's not all gone but there'll be another hazardous waste collection event soon.

I'm on a streak...12 days in a row of adulting. Today my bathroom got a Spring clean (it really needed it). I'm gonna try and do a weekly touch up from now on.

Snow update: I lost a couple of tree limbs, and there's a big wad of snow sitting on top of my electric line, but I'd say this storm ended up being much easier than the last one. It was much easier to dig the car out (less than 1/2 hour). I'd say we'll be pretty much back to normal by tomorrow.

Book Bans Still Happen Loudly in States with Anti-Book Ban Laws

If book banning is being crafted to circumvent Freedom to Read bills, it's beyond time to call this a public health crisis.

Our legal system's treatment of immigrants and the deceitful tactics used by agencies like ICE violate due process. We must resist this abuse of power and defend the rights of all seeking asylum—no family should fear the wrongful actions of those enforcing our laws. @elizaorlins.bsky.social #FindOut
