At its core, good caregiving is about finding a way to communicate — listening, watching and empathizing — to learn and respond to what the other person wants, needs and feels. #Alzheimers #dementia #caregiving #kindness #compassion
"A person with dementia is not being deliberately difficult. Often their behavior is an attempt to communicate. If you can establish what this is, you can resolve their concerns more quickly. Place yourself in their shoes and try to understand how they might be feeling. There's power in empathy."

Do’s and Don’ts of Communication and #Dementia alzsd.org/dos-and-dont... by @alzheimerssd.bsky.social #Alzheimers #caregiving #kindness
Tips for Interacting With a Person With Alzheimer’s:

* Don't stop visiting them just because they may not remember you

* Use their actual name when addressing them

* Avoid quizzing them on what they may or may not know

* Don't assume they're always confused

* Avoid speaking to them as though they are a child

* Treat them how you would like to be treated

Empathy is at the core of enduringly successful caregiving in which quality of life for the both care partners thrives. #quote #Alzheimers #dementia #mentalhealth
Empathy

“When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you
don't blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not
doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or
less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have
problems with our friends or family, we blame the other
person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will
grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive
effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason
and argument. That is my experience. No blame, no
reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you
understand, and you show that you understand, you can
love, and the situation will change.”
