I am skeptical of any narrative coming out of the UAE government in relation to the FlyDubai incident.

I’m very melancholic today. I don’t know what to do with my career, and I don’t see how I can find fulfilment. I spend so much time trying to get into software, so much effort working in software. And all I ever got was misery. It’s disappointing. I don’t have a clear idea of how to leave it […]

It’s interesting that whenever you hear about someone quitting an AI lab, the stated reasons are always aligned with the industry’s internal narrative; It’s always something to do with how powerful the models are, or how transformative it all is. These people never seem to quit because they’ve […]

[War, Suicide] It’s interesting that two incidents - The arrest of suspicious people near a UK airforce base, and the FlyDubai incident - Are being tied to Iran by governments and some in the media. Such associations are possible, but claiming them is premature. The incidents may turn out to […]

It strikes me that a lot of current technological development is aiming to produce concepts from a popular culture perception of the future, rather than things that are practically useful or feasible. Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning research is almost entirely focused on producing […]

Some day, the subordinate powers of the Western bloc will realise that the United States of America is the greatest threat to their interests. On that day, they will begin to act with some degree of sense. I cannot say when that day is coming, but I hope it will be soon.

If you give an unreliable computer program the ability to perform arbitrary actions over an internet connection, it will probably do something harmful. This is incredibly predictable, and indicates that the program is either immature or badly designed in the first place. It is not an indication […]

[Transphobia] Been worrying massively about the rise of transphobia again. It’s terrifying. A huge force that wants to ruin my life for no reason, because of an irrelevant detail of how I was born. It is hard to live and function with that sort of threat. I’m not sure if it will become a […]

I’ve been feeling this recurring sadness about leaving software development. I know it’s the right choice, but I feel a sense of loss. I was so invested in it, and I don’t really know what I am without it.

[War, Humor] Donald Trump is gearing up on a big decision: Should he escalate the Iran war to the point of a crushing defeat that ends the USA’s status as a world power permanently? It’s a difficult decision. On the one hand, further escalation would kill thousands, disrupt the world in […]

This AI-generated proof OpenAI has come up with does not strike me as very impressive. From what I’ve read, the process involved running 10,000 “AI agents” for 88 hours. Collectively, that’s 880,000 hours of runtime on complex statistical models - Probably well over 100,000 hours of runtime on […]

I’ve spent the past 12 years spending all my energy fighting, but all I’ve done is build a life I can’t live. I feel defeated. I’ve spent so much time, and I have so little to show for it. I feel like I’m behind where I should be, behind others. It all seems like such a waste.

[aipol] i've been mulling over the claim that "genAI is just like {compilers, LSPs, ...} because it improves productivity also! they're just abstractions of 2025!" and, sure, this is true at least in the facile and mostly useless "line of count" generated sense. but that's also irrelevant. I'm […]

Economists have been predicting an economic recovery in New Zealand for several years, and I don’t really take them seriously anymore. To the extent there is a recovery, it seems to be due entirely to international factors, and affects a limited segment of the country. Personally, it really […]

If you want to use AI code generation “responsibly”, then you should not do it until there are tools and techniques that are proven to work well. Using unproven tools is irresponsible, and these tools are unproven.

I’ve been quite sad recently. I’m not sure if I can or should continue in my career as a software developer. It seems like the industry, in general, does not care about quality or good practices. AI is an obvious example, but it’s just everywhere. The treatment of women is also an issue. But […]

“LLMs are just a tool” is a phrase that comes up a lot. It’s strange. A tool can and should be critically evaluated, but people say it as a response to that critical evaluation. It seems to function as a thought-terminating cliché, rather than a statement of meaning.

I find the idea of code generation worth considering. Using natural language and an LLM is obviously dead end. Input is too ambiguous, output quality is dismal. It’s also impossible to verify. Using a formal specification language as an input might work. That removes the ambiguity, and allow […]

Debates about transsexual women are not really about transsexual women. They are about a fictional kind of being that reflects misunderstandings about transsexual women. A lot of people conflate this fictional being with actual transsexual women, and are quite resistant to being corrected.

Kind of rich for Mr Rubio to claim Iran isn’t interested in making a deal. The Iranians made a deal with the US about a month ago, and then the administration he’s part of torpedoed it. Also, the president he’s serving under torpedoed another deal about a decade ago. It’s hardly surprising that […]
