Bring Science to Politics - for Climate, Nature & Our Survival @sciencetopolitics.bsky.social · 27/05/2025
Earlier this month ~200 scientists gathered to #BringScienceToPolitics. Hear why @chrisgpackham.bsky.social joined us. Part of the "increasing number of scientists realising that the job isn't done once the paper is published"? Follow us and help push for the evidence-informed policy we all need.

I’m going to Parliament with 130+ other scientists this Tuesday to talk to our MPs about putting science back into decision making. I’ll be talking to mine about the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, the Climate and Nature Bill, and our 30x30 commitments.

I really feel that the whole “we can’t say we are over 1.5°c until it’s been 10yrs, 20yrs” thing is so illustrative of that. As a scientist I totally get it, but as a climate campaigner waiting ten years to say it with 100% confidence feels pointless.

Last week I concluded my review of the year by writing “I hope 2025 is the year people worldwide wake up to the multiple threats we are facing and start to act accordingly.” Maybe my wish for the year is beginning to be fulfilled. This week the media has been full of the horrendous wildfires in Los Angeles. I don’t want to downplay how horrendous these events are and any loss of life is dreadful.

The annoying thing is she’s really good on flooding ( we are coastal and have had two major flood events in the last couple of years) but she doesn’t yet see the link between flooding and climate change, or land/nature use

I will send one last email but I just get the same prepared answers from mine, she’s a new Labour MP and I can understand her being hesitant but at 28 she’s going to have to live with this for a long time.

1/ On 24th January the Climate and Nature Bill will be read in Parliament but – outrageously – the Labour party may not allow its MPs a free vote It’s no exaggeration to say the fate of the world depends on urgent political action, so this is no time to be playing party politics 🧵

I find it frustrating that in general, the solutions are all growth based? We don’t seem to be exploring the potential of a concerted societal effort to reduce demand, which makes the job in hand less of a challenge.

I wonder if people will join the dots, because CC just amplifies weaknesses? So areas that flooded occasionally flood more, or more frequently, but people still say ‘ well it flooded there in 1920 so it can’t be CC’ It’s very frustrating. Did they expect a smiting hand to come from the clouds?

We seem to have gone straight from ‘we don’t believe in anthropogenic climate change’ to ‘humans are controlling everything with lasers and haarp’ I missed the part where we all realised about burning fossil fuels & did something about it. I look fondly on how we dealt with acid rain and ozone now!

The ECT allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments for loss of hypothetical profits. A 20yr sunset clause means we need to grab this chance to leave en masse with other EU countries or face huge financial risk. The govt will decide this month - let’s help them. gju.st/3foecAI

Yes this area is the same, it was mooted as a harbour but then became very silted and marshy so each step of development helped people forget it was once largely unusable. I would like to see the shopping centre taken down & a large reedbed installed, as that would deal with the sewage overflow too!

Ours isn’t just a sea level rise problem though, it’s a bad planning, privatised water company, lack of council maintenance ,impermeable surface, rain bomb problem. I’m not sure anyone in charge here even understands the question, let alone has the necessary suite of answers.

We had Chris Packham with us in September which got a lot of media attention but it’s not easy securing a celeb so we are just going to keep repeating the action regularly until the election, and possibly beyond bc we want the opposition to be just as aware of the situation.

Our (coastal) town has seen severe flooding twice this year (used to be more like once a decade) There are lots of convos locally re what should be done but most focus on more engineering soln’s. I think we need more nature based ones. We just don’t know what volumes we will get, so how do we plan?

Jane Ripley @jane13.bsky.social · 07/11/2023
I live in a coastal town that has seen two very disruptive floods this year, poorer families in basement flats are already being displaced, but people imagine it’s a ‘foreign’ problem. I think it’s mostly a poverty problem, they can’t afford to move to safer places even in the same town/country.
