ITV’s Martin Lewis programme is pretty good, but they can’t cover everything so there’s definitely room for more consumer programmes.

2am to 10am here. Thankfully I’m retired so no longer have to cope with the horrors of 9 to 5 work, though my sleep schedule is currently being disrupted by building work next door that starts at 8.00!

Not everyone. But a fair number. And the Mail and the Telegraph are not exactly renowned for scrupulously accurate journalism.

People think that because they believe the drivel that’s written about it in the Mail and the Telegraph. The question should be why the right-wing press does this.

The problem is they only allocated 40 minutes per viewing, and a lot of people (understandably) are spending longer than that. I think I’d want to take my time if I’d paid 30 quid for a ticket!

Not your main point I know, but as a non-American I’m aghast at the mere idea of a gunfire-tracking organisation! And very thankful that I live in a part of the world where such things are unheard of.

I don’t understand the hostility to compulsory voting. I’ve lived in two countries that have it (Australia and Belgium) and it works perfectly well. Agree though that some more flexibility as to where you can vote would be useful, and it would definitely make sense to hold elections at weekends.

I also have very bad short sight and, several years into my varifocal journey I have found that the only thing that works for me is a good pair of varifocal glasses. I deal with the sunglasses issue by wearing ones that are designed to go on top of regular glasses; sounds weird but it works!

When we storm the barricades of overpriced seasonal tat, can we also instigate a system under which no Christmas-related crap can be sold before November?

Oh I remember this one! The comments after it were also entertaining, with puzzled Americans disputing which was the “away” player (because US sports apparently put the away team first, bizarrely).

I think only allowing 40 minutes to see it is the problem. That’s clearly ludicrous. Why they settled on that time I have no idea, but the root of it is (I suspect) sheer greed on the part of the BM - wanting to cram in as many paying customers as possible.
100
jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It wouldn’t have worked anyway, as the BM is no longer offering priority access to new members. I guess there’s been a big rush of people joining!

Mystery solved! Thanks! The moderation reminds me of my old office’s “profanity checker”, which (a) couldn’t spell, and (b) blocked emails with words that partially contained something deemed inappropriate, eg “sex”. Which was a bit of a problem given that we worked in Sussex.🙄

It’s an unwritten law of social media that any post criticising someone’s spelling or grammar will itself contain a mistake. I’ve done it myself, more than once!

The entire premise of that article is nonsense. He says you should “find people you like and respect on the other side” to talk to. But I would never “like and respect” a racist, so you don’t even get to the starting point.

I’ll be interested to see where this leaves the Green Party in London. In my borough (Hackney) the Greens got a massive majority in the recent local elections. Hackney also has a significant Jewish population. I can see trouble ahead.

Surprised they can get any decent lawyers to act for them at this stage. I know barristers have the cab rank rule so it’s more difficult for them to refuse instructions, but I’d have thought solicitors firms would be running for the hills.

That whole area has changed so much - Tate Modern, the Globe, Shard, etc. Someone in Southwark made some very astute development decisions back in the day. If you’d told young Peckham-dwelling me about all this 30 years ago, she wouldn’t have believed it!

As soon as I saw Quintavalle was involved, I knew exactly what was going on. He’s a cunt. That’s not language I use lightly, but in this case I think it’s entirely justified.

The term “hard-working“ always seems to be used in politics (and the media) to idealise whichever group of people they’re talking about. The one that infuriates me is “hard-working families“, as if single people don’t count!

I had something similar but the police wouldn’t tell us what had happened. They just said “there’s been an incident“. So my reason for being late was “incident”.

Though there are other ways of exploring options. When I was at school I was planning to do a degree in French (language and literature). Went on a taster course in 6th form and absolutely hated it! Admittedly that was a long time ago; I’m hoping schools give more helpful advice these days.

jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
True. Also (in my experience), you rarely get offered refreshments in any public sector recruitment, simply because they don’t have the budget for it. They would supply tap water, but coffee? Dream on!
010
jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
That doesn't surprise me at all! But I would still think it odd to be offered coffee in a JAC interview. It's a formal selection process, not a cosy chat with your mates.

jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Same here. In my line of work interviews tend to be very formal. Drinking water would normally be available, but I’d find it extremely weird to be offered anything else! It might happen in a “friendly chat” situation, but never in a proper interview.

I live in east London and my most convenient airport is London City. Therefore all flights (or at least, the ones I want to use) should go from there. But not on a flight path that will cause noise over my house. Surely that’s not too much to ask?

jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Interesting. I’m sure there are many reasons why people are put off applying, which as you say is a different issue to them applying and not succeeding. I hope more will be done to investigate.
020
jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Interesting. The lack of diversity in the appointments does look odd. It’s not the selectors’ fault if they don’t receive the applicactions, but I wonder why people from the other groups don’t apply.

jane-n.bsky.social @jane-n.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Also, why are they all barristers? I thought solicitors were eligible to apply these days.
