Right? Even if it cures cancer... that's really not the only health concern.

People are using it for work, too. A woman basically said, "I've been doing this job for years without AI, let me keep doing it without AI," and they kinda had to say yes. Religious exemptions, especially for Christians, are a low bar in courts, and this is pretty clear cut.

She won an exemption from using AI at her tech job. The Pope's remarks could fuel similar appeals.
Legal experts say employers must take AI-related religious objections seriously, as a 2023 ruling raised the bar for denying such accommodations.

Before he enlisted, my grandpa had a job cleaning ambulance interiors. Very similar vibe there.

Even if it doesn't succeed, the fact that is happening *at all* means our democracy is critically broken right now.

Protest the Hero. I tried to go see them with my brother when I was in HS, but they ended up having to pull out of the tour because of a visa issue. Ended up getting tickets to see them a decade later and nearly had to scuttle plans again because a tornado tore through just south of the venue.

For me, it's just, why keep reading them? Do you really need that much help? Are you just keeping reading even though none of them are helpful? Are you trying to fix imagined flaws? Are you reading them and thinking, "I *am* doing everything right!" Like, all those scenarios are a bit sus, imo.

When my wife and I got married, our RSVP form had a question asking for favorite book/genre (which we used to hand-pick books for each person for favor bags). My SIL put "self-help" as her preferred genre 😬

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

I also think Aunt Crystal will just avoid watching it, to keep it in the abstract. People will go to great lengths to avoid see uncomfortable truths right in front of them. All they'll have to do here is avoid going to a webpage.

I started this year. I'm very sporadic with it, though. Recently I had some trouble writing in it until I realized that since it's just for me, I can do it however I want and started writing poetry in it.

One of my chores as a kid was scooping the litter boxes every night, which meant after watching Gremlins, I had to go into the basement alone. I practically ran back up the stairs after I finished because I was still so spooked from that movie.

Infer vs. Imply: Usage Guide

The use of infer to mean "suggest, hint" is commonly identified as an error for imply, especially when used with a human subject. Sentences like "They infer that it can't be done" and "Are you inferring that I'm at fault?" are, by this thinking, correctly rendered as "They imply that it can't be done" and "Are you implying that I am at fault?" In truth, the meanings of infer and imply have overlapped since the 16th century, making the need for a distinction a matter of preference. Those who wish to honor the distinction will limit their use of infer to its meanings relating to reaching conclusions and surmising or guessing, as in "Based on these facts we can infer certain conclusions"; they will avoid even the "to involve as a normal outcome of thought" and "point out, indicate" meanings.

And other authors can't sell future books *either*, because publishers won't want to risk putting out content that might get banned. Many books have been shadow banned by the industry before pen hits paper.

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

The justification I always hear about why 'leaders' deserve their salaries (seeing Kotlikoff near $1mil) is that they are the ones who will be held responsible when anything goes wrong. Kotlikoff needs to earn his salary by resigning. Doing so is also probably the easist path to culture change, too.

Not to insomnia-weigh-in on the concept of restorative justice, but I thought long and hard ten years ago about what I would say if someone asked what Alex Kozinski could do by way of restorative justice. (Nobody ever asked.)

For something like this, though, I would argue that old search algorithms could usually surface this sort of thing and if it didn't, who cares? If the stakes are so low, the impact of failing to get an answer is, too. If the only use cases are low stakes ones, what is the point?

If the creators really thought it was going to destroy the world, they would either stop what they are doing or try harder to hide it. If this is what they are saying, what is it that they aren't saying?
