nicotine is apparently a nootropic and possibly good for the brain as smoking and lung cancer rates have gone down but parkinson's rates up (nicotine is speculated to possibly be beneficial for parkinson's as it boosts dopamine while parkinson's people have less dopamine)

so essentially you think wiki is now more or less obsolete due to LLMs existing (and you can check primary sources with them just like with wiki)? (And LLMs you can run "locally" on your device). That's fascinating, never really thought about it that way until now.

I think it's probably more of a question of how to effectively help the needy in society and a discussion of what specific approaches we think might help

I think about this from time to time, the people who aren't rewarded for major problems they may prevent that are unknown to the population. Or even people who struggle to want to live but choose to do so, so like their whole life they "solved" the problem of continuing to live but no one may care

I suspect this answer may be less surprising as the AI's trained on the data of people who'd have this opinion or viewpoint; other AI seem to give some slightly different answers (for example, "increasing the welfare state"), although there's overlap (also probably trained on a lot of the same data)

I guess the question is why these kinds of jobs are thought to be tied to manufacturing? I think it has to do with the "productivity paradox", and the tangible goods produced by machines seem to be at the peak of prosperous output. hbr.org/1986/07/the-...

Income tax was created because the government grew too big, the tariffs were sufficient for covering a smaller government's needs. The tax was also supposed to be temporary but only expanded unnecessarily. Federal Reserve's bad policies have been credited as causing the Great Depression.

right, that's fine as a critique... I was just wondering about what those "real numbers" are in comparison. They could be, for example, actually higher than the numbers Trump gives. Some of the individual tariff rates are (but not averages I don't think?). thanks for discussing things

I understand that, I am asking for what the rate of tariff is on goods from various countries to the USA;it seems posters here do not think there are any tariffs at all (?). For example, this website has a chart suggesting there is a 20% tariff by China on certain goods: www.piie.com/research/pii...

was there the word "free" before this scribbling, because I think trump's been saying "free trade is bad" (or claiming it's not really "free" trade)

if these numbers are thought to be incorrect, does anyone have a link to the estimated correct numbers? Because other countries do indeed have some tariff rate, it's not just a trade imbalance calculation: www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/...

initially a bit surprising to me but this is basically Trump acting out of self-interest, because he was also attacked but for different reasons, so is trying to basically stifle assassinations. He could score political points by announcing *any* healthcare measure

as a related conversation, a lot of antivax people point out that sanitation has been a large driver of getting rid of various diseases - this is largely a correct point relevant to the discussion (like with various "quarantine" and "social distancing" measures that can be taken?)
