I can’t believe I’m part of the same species that would do this to an innocent animal. He will be fined and receive the Probation Act like all these monsters do, and basically get off with a slap on the wrists. Animal cruelty should be punished with a very lengthy jail sentence. jrnl.ie/7187716

“In response, Galway [University] said its overseas collaborations were established in accordance with legal, ethical and governance requirements” Nothing ‘ethical’ when the animal being experimented on can’t give consent. Truly outstanding work by The Journal. jrnl.ie/7183554

Irish universities paid hundreds of thousands for invasive animal experiments abroad
The overseas experiments are completely uninspected and uncounted by Ireland’s regulator as they take place outside its jurisdiction.

I couldn’t agree more. The meat, dairy and egg lobby have done a good job of convincing us all we need animal protein, supported of course by the state. Blinkers well and truly fastened, the public continues to buy into it without a second thought.

It might also be given to older people for free from their relatives who have a bank. Even if you are paying for it from a contractor or turf-cutter it will cost a lot less than other fossil fuels. People also continue to burn sticks. When you’re on a low income you’ll do what you can to get by.
100
Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
It’s free (or even marginally profitable) if you have your own turf bank and offer the contractor to cut extra for himself as payment for works, or ask him to cut extra and then sell that directly off the spread bank to relatives/neighbours. Compare that to ~€2k for a fill of oil. Big difference.

Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Offaly has the highest turf consumption of any county as per CSO data. Best we have.
000
Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
…somewhat played up. Turf is largely about economics. It’s free fuel in many cases once you allow a supply of turf to the contractor or sell it yourself. In addition, it’s about ownership and access. There’s a feeling of dispossession at play here too. Turf is a highly emotive subject.
010
Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Oil is a commodity, whereas turf is won through physical labour (alongside mechanical means these days). A lot of people have been saving turf since childhood, and see nothing wrong with it. They don’t have the education we have. Having said that, the notion of ‘heritage’ and ‘tradition’ is…
110
Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
It’s free fuel in many cases for some of the most disadvantaged, marginalised and vulnerable people on our society John. That doesn’t take away the carbon cost of course, but instead shines a light on the actions of the state in creating a system of profound inequality in rural Ireland.
120
Jamie Rohu @jamierohu.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Those stats are for the country as a whole. Take a look at the midlands, especially Offaly, in isolation. Turf rightly or wrongly remains central to many communities way of life.

Hi Amy. I think they’re loath that any scrutiny over farmed animal mistreatment may get out into the wider discourse. In this case it’s a state institution which has seemingly acted in such a way that may garner public ridicule. A PR disaster.

Lough Ennell, Co. Westmeath. This is a beautiful lake, with birdlife aplenty. However, like most of our waterbodies Lough Ennell faces human-induced pressures. The most obvious is enrichment and pollution arising from agricultural activities in the farmland surrounding it and beyond.

Peat in situ is not homogeneous, but layered in strata based upon the types of habitat that produced it. Reed swamps, fen and raised bog all result in varying deposits, with each being used by people for different purposes (eg upper layers used as a growing medium in horticulture).

Out on Cornafulla Bog in Co. Roscommon today meeting local community activists concerned about a wind farm being constructed here. It is windy, but the bog is close to special areas of conservation and adjacent to Clonmacnoise. The peat averages 5m deep, so not an ideal site it would seem 🤔
