The bitter smell of fresh grounds emanated as the barista poured four coffees. She handed Aria the final mug, the corner of her lip lifting. “Just let me know if you need anything else.”
As the stair treads groaned again, Cady leaned toward Aria’s ear. “She thinks you’re pretty… she’s not wrong, doll.”
Warmth flushed through Aria’s cheeks, and she sipped her coffee, sinking deeper into her rice-filled seat. Every taste bud fired as the hot liquid enveloped her mouth. Finally, the real thing.

Riley launched through the cabin door, meeting Zach’s wide eyes, the monster between them. He turned to run, his boots refusing to grip before he crashed into the mud-soaked earth. The creature reared its hulking frame onto two legs over him.
“No!” Riley screamed. Hot current rippled through her body, seizing her muscles. Pain seared beneath her skin. Her mind entwined with her parasite’s, whirling into twisting threads of consciousness, and they plunged into the bear’s psyche together.
Resistance. Their assault crashed against a wall. It wasn’t enough. Another jolt cascaded through her, and they battered the gates, smashing through the defenses. Then fear. Not their own, but an overwhelming dread rising from the colossal beast itself. A lost, scared animal buried beneath the dominance of its occupier. In a blink, she saw its life. Simple. Peaceful. Until it was twisted and left here as a sentry.
Darkness surged into its mind and another presence burrowed into them. Two raging blue eyes set against a dark, shadowed face, pulsing wires beneath its skin. ‘Heretic. At last.’

After a long day of pitching, it's fun to post a snip. Just some no nonsense aftermath.

Zach approached, running his hand through his short hair. His eyes scanned the splattered black blood painted on her clothes. “Happy to see you both.”
Aria peered past his shoulder. “Everyone safe?
“Exhausted with some injuries. We got lucky.” His face wrinkled into a grimace as his hand shot over his nose. “Holy… what the hell is that smell?”
Lucky so far. Something about this entire night didn’t sit right. Aria moved past Zach, waving for him to follow. “You don’t want to know. Any news from camp? Riley?”
