Autumn Walk 🍁
A country road bends to the left and disappears behind leaning pine trees. A maple tree has turned golden on the right. The sky overhead is dappled with clouds but dark blue shows through.

My next spooky season read is ‘Salem’s Lot. I remember trying to read this one when I was 12ish, but it didn’t hold my attention. Liking it better now. Such a time capsule of the 70s. 💙📚
‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King sits on a white textured blanket. The cover is shadowy shades of soft green and black silhouettes.

October is for country walks to watch the colors change.
The curve of a country road under a deep blue sky of whispy clouds. Tall trees tower over the left side of the road. A field of golden tall grass sits off to the right. Evergreens disappear back into the horizon line. A green field with bushes just starting to show their autumn colors with tall evergreens behind them, all under a blue sky with gauzy ribbon clouds.

Whenever the boy wizard thing trends this year, I'm just going to repost this:
Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
A much better boy wizard book series than that other one.

Diavola by Jennifer Throne was a fun summer read about a horrible family on vacation together in Italy with ghosts. Not sure it would stand up to repeat readings, but kept me engaged for a couple of days. 💙📚
Diavola by Jennifer Thorne sits on a white comforter. The cover shows a renaissance woman with an open book. Her blurred face is turned over her shoulder to stare out at the reader.

View from yesterday of the big Spokane fire that started about a mile north of my house and then headed right for town. I’m safe and lucky to only lose power for the night.
Across a freshly plowed field, there are small houses and a tree line with a huge wildfire smoke cloud dominating the sky.

Here's the intro the editors wrote for my horror story RED THREAD. Such names to be mentioned alongside! It's ✨free✨ to read over at Horrible Scribblings. #SFFH #HorrorWriter horrificscribblings.com/red-thread/
“Red Thread”–J. Nathan

The setting as antagonist is one of literature’s oldest motifs, dating back to the Cedar Forest in the Epic of Gilgamesh. In most instances, these villainous and/or oppositional settings represent an indirect or thematic antagonism. The horror genre, however, transforms the purely symbolic setting into a sentient, malicious, and hungry entity. The most iconic modern example is Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel (The Shining, 1977), a sprawling predator that craves the souls of the Torrance family. Close behind are Shirley Jackson’s Hill House in 1959 and Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves in 2000. J. Nathan’s story exists in the same literary tradition. Three curious women sneak inside their neighborhood’s notorious derelict mansion to do some exploring, only to realize far too late that the house was waiting for such an opportunity for a long, long time. The liminal space’s spatial and temporal flux puts the narrator in a position where she believes she must retrace her path through the house backward in order to escape, and thus the story itself is mostly narrated with events in reverse chronology, an experiment hard to pull off from a writing standpoint that works beautifully with the liminal themes.

Recently finished this and can’t stop thinking about it. I don’t know why we don’t talk about The Sundial as much as Jackson’s other work. It’s such a strange and interesting take on the end of the world. Very funny and dark. Very Shirley Jackson. 💙📚
The book, The Sundial by Shirley Jackson sits on a white down comforter. The cover show an east coast American mansion in the distance with a sundial dominating the foreground. In the upper right corner are four people dress in mid century fashion. We only see them from the waist down because of how high they sit on the cover.

First time seeing my words in print, in a book, that I can hold in my hands. 🤩 You can find this cozy tale over at @lunastation.bsky.social

J. Nathan

A faded crescent moon sits in the middle of the page. Under it is written:

J. Nathan is a speculative fiction writer living in the Pacific Northwest. She is greatly influenced by Ursula K Le Guin and Shirley Jackson. You can usually find her on a run through the woods or rambling about reading and writing on Bluesky @jamielnathan.bsky.social.
