Some Thoughts on AI, LLMs and BS

I do not know how many of you use LLMs like Chat GPT. It appears at least some students feel ‘anxious, confused and distrustful’ about AI in the classroom and among their peers and/or are not happy about their professors using these tools.

My recommendation and preference in this class: avoid using large language models (LLMs) like Chat GPT.

In return, I promise not to use AI detectors like TurnItIn. These technologies turn up too many false positives, provide your words - uncompensated - to large companies, and undermine the trust and community I hope we build together in class. I also use an ungrading approach to assessment that emphasizes your learning.

LLMs are tools with specific purposes that can help their users with specific tasks, e.g. computer programming and quantitative analysis. You will have plenty of opportunities here at NYU to experiment with these tools. However, LLMs cannot write. They can string together words that look like sentences, and sentences that look like paragraphs. However, they cannot write, in the sense that writing is thinking. To the extent the assignments in this class require thinking (including but not limited to memos, process journals, reflections), using LLMs like ChatGPT will not help you fulfill the assignments or achieve the goals in this class. They may create a deliverable (like a group presentation), but will not help you learn the process of building group cohesion and co-creating deliverables together (which are just as important as the deliverables themselves).
Just like traditional grading emphasizes product over process, so too do LLMs circumvent the process for the product. In the words of Frankfurt, via Hicks, et. al, “ChatGPT is bullshit”. The models do not concern themselves with the truth or accuracy of their outputs. For example, they will generate fake quotations and citations. ChatGPT may help you write an email to your group to set up a meeting. ChatGPT will not help you connect the course material to the civic engagement assignment you complete, and it will not help you reflect on your course experience to make your final grade recommendation. ChatGPT can help you look like you know what you are talking about, but I do not care about ChatGPT’s takes. I care about yours. If you need assistance with your writing, talk to (or email) me, and/or look into the university’s Writing Center.

If the reasons outlined above are not sufficient to deter you from using LLMs, I encourage you to make an informed decision about usage. Look into the environmental costs, labor practices, data mining/privacy issues, and accessibility issues. If you choose to move forward with these tools, you must acknowledge this usage.

Had a mostly good time at the game today but Fifa and Met Life need to reevaluate their vendor policies. No water easily available (even to buy) at/after the 72nd minute was problematic (to say the least). Positive: taking public transportation from Princeton to the stadium #FifaCWC
Dear Fifa and MetLife-

I had the opportunity to attend the Fifa Club World Club this afternoon at MetLife Stadium. I want to say the experience was fantastic- great crowd, some good soccer.

However, at the 70th minute, with a heat advisory (91 degrees/feels like 96), we could not easily access water. We were willing to pay, of course, but all of the vendors we came across by our section were already closed. This policy - or practice, if not official guidance- has the potential to cause great harm. (Also, if you need the capitalist argument, it represents lost profit.)

Please reconsider your policies and practices for the other semi and final (not to mention next year's World Cup.

Thank you.

For the past several weeks we have been wrestling with "What makes an issue a Jewish issue?" "Who gets to project a unified communal identity....and who gets to choose what that identity reflects?" Thanks @kampeas.bsky.social for giving me additional material to enrich these discussions.
screenshot: Legacy groups have long held that if the Jewish community wants to maintain influence it cannot alienate the executive branch and/or one of the major parties. The other view is that Jewish organizations aspiring to represent the entire community should reflect the views of their constituents, however much that might irk the powers that be.

This while 🧵 @goodtroublein.bsky.social called out this approach in Indiana last year when IUDs were cut out of a bill designed to expand birth control access. Article about the Indiana issue in the following post. 1/2

"I think the way this is happening is very reminiscent of how things played out for abortion access," Dr. Caroline Rouse, an OB-GYN who teaches at the Indiana University School of Medicine, told Mirror Indy. "Their playbook for eliminating reproductive choice is not subtle."

She is a board member for the Good Trouble Coalition, a health care advocacy group that originally supported the bill before lawmakers amended it.

"While some will argue some access is better than no access, we are concerned about the precedent this bill sets," said Dr. Gabriel Bosslet, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a coalition member, during the committee meeting.
"If hospitals only have to stock the subdermal implant, they will not stock IUDs."

This paper focuses on the relationship between message framing on social media and donations. The fun part is our data came from a competition in which nonprofits went head to head for fundraising - think World Cup bracket. 2/3

Hi Dr. JLD,
I just wanted to take the time to say thanks for an amazing semester. I enjoyed your class, especially your teaching style and emphasis on group work--it encouraged us to make friends in class and get to know everyone when we usually might not take the time to. Your flexible deadline system has to be the greatest thing ever. I was struggling with three back-to-back midterms and term papers so I was super grateful for that extra bit of cushioning in terms of submission deadlines--it really helped relieve a lot of stress and I'm sure all your future students would appreciate it if you continued to use it.

It was a great experience being in your class, and I hope to learn again with you soon!
