Writers! Join us for a weekend in March full of writing at the Miller Tree Inn. I'll be giving one-on-one editorial feedback with every attendee as well as teaching workshops and running writing sprints!

Jamie Ryu | Editor @jamieisreading.bsky.social · 13/02/2025

Feeling defeated tonight. I’ve had a lot of incredible, joyous news this week but also some really hard hurdles to face. If you’re a writer in the PNW looking for a weekend getaway in March, please, please, please reach out!

Writing might feel frivolous to some, but books are powerful. Information is powerful. Your voice and your story, no matter how small you think it is, are powerful. Never forget that ❤️

Jamie Ryu | Editor @jamieisreading.bsky.social · 03/02/2025

This is a weird time to be promoting an event, but we’re hosting a writer’s retreat. It’s from March 7-10 in Forks, WA. We’d love to have you. In light of everything that’s going on, I’m going to be focusing a lot on using your voice, protecting your work, and making sure your story is heard.

Jamie Ryu | Editor @jamieisreading.bsky.social · 21/01/2025

I have so much anxiety that I can’t sleep so I just want to say that I’m determined to fight in the best way I know how: by sharing stories that matter. That might sound or feel silly to some but stories, books, and information hold immense power. There’s a reason they’re trying to ban books.

Sometimes, I think the universe is out to get me. I just knocked a freshly made cream shrimp sauce off the stove and all over my floor. And that was after I already needed to get my car towed today and had an ear infection last week

MOST author-subsidized publishing options are vanity presses or vanity presses claiming to be hybrid presses. Those are SCAMS. They will take thousands from you and provide very little in return. How can you tell which ones are worth it and which aren’t? Here are just a few ways:

Fishes must have a hard time explaining that they were fished up and let go. Like: Fish 1: “I swear the giant alien roped me up by the mouth and but a thing next to me and threw me back down here” Fish 2: “ Not this again Jared, just eat the damn bug”

It’s been a year. I have been disciplining my body for a year for this. A year of careful eating and light exercise awaiting this faithful day. For the rest of the month I plan to devour so many McRibs. I do not care that it is just a prism of pork slathered with BBQ sauce. I need it now and forever

I don’t think it has too heavy an effect on buyers. It matters more to publishers who try to create more fanfare around the debut label with marketing. But I was never in sales or marketing so don’t quote me on that!

If you’ve published other novels, they won’t be able to call it your debut. But that should be okay. That used to be a problem but it isn’t as much nowadays.

Jamie Ryu | Editor @jamieisreading.bsky.social · 23/11/2024

It depends! They can call it your debut novel regardless
