Here is the answer, based on AES data (thank you McAllister, Cameron, McEachern, Perry & Jiang, doi:10.26193/HJ3KT1)

A fun fact I learned from this book is that the horse was originally domesticated for meat. Grass on the Steppe is often below winter snow. Cattle and sheep would starve; horses instinctively dig with their hooves. The Proto Indo-Europeans discovered they could ride them later, by accident

I’ve been reading “The Line of Beauty”, which has been on my list since @ppfideas.bsky.social’s series on political novels. It’s magnificent, and has an interesting new insight on the Thatcher era: everyone was incredibly horny. And gay. Five stars

I, too, would like to slam the state-based levy. Land tax is no more than a “tax on the rich”. That’s right. It merely “funds public services” by “redistributing money from people who can afford it”, and it’s “fair” and “good”,
Billionaire Dial A Dump founder Ian Malouf is a vocal critic, slamming the state-based levy as no more than a “tax on the rich”.

I like how, in this story that’s mainly about political tactics, we get a glimpse of the alternative Treasurer’s stroke of genius: what if we had automatic de-stabilisers?

Left-wing NIMBYism is the most depressing NIMBYism. After guns and drugs, housing is the #3 most tightly regulated market in Australia. To look at the current pile of policy failures and blame “the free market” takes a huge amount of motivated self-delusion

Novels used to get dinged from the Miles Franklin for not being Australian enough. This one’s about Australia/China, but mainly China viewed from Australia, and being a #BadChinese, so I’m glad it worked out. Also I really dig the Joan’s Book Club design ethos of the post-award reprint cover.

It’s a jokey tongue-in-cheek bit of metafiction which feels extremely 90s (complimentary). The modern journey into fake/real China is intercut with tall tales and ironical vignettes from the Jin Dynasty, which was an embarrassing historical cul de sac for the main arc of Chinese civilisation

Interesting question
Commenting on the claims that Israel had sought a green light from the Trump administration for the attack, Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft said: “What is the value of an American security umbrella [for Qatar] and hosting a US base on your soil if the United States itself conspires to attack you?

Those two events were huge demand shocks; the Trump tariffs are a negative supply shock, which would call for an emergency rate _rise_, no? (Assuming that the Fed board keeps doing their job and don’t get fired or DOGEd or whatever.)
Excerpt from a Gruaniad article:

Analysts believe the US Federal Reserve may need to step in. Jim Reid, at Deutsche Bank, said: “Markets are pricing a growing probability of an emergency [interest rate] cut, just as we saw during the Covid turmoil and the height of the GFC [global financial crisis] in 2008.”

I’m genuinely confused about what Dutton thinks “tardy” means 🤔
Excerpt from article in the Gruaniad:

Dutton accused the prime minister of “lying to Australian women” by suggesting the return-to-office orders would impact anyone other than people who are working for the public service in Canberra.

“I think it’s actually pretty tardy and I think the prime minister has been caught out telling fibs a few times now and his record is starting to build up of somebody whose word I wouldn’t trust on some of these issues,” Dutton said.

Richardson said there were risks inherent in any program the size of Aukus, but he argued that, four years into the deal, reversing the decision and extricating Australia from the tripartite deal would simply set Australia back and expose its defences.

It’s the Stink Spirit, from “Spirited Away”, looking stinky and disgusting. See the joke here is that I’m the Stink Spirit, hahaha! Haha! Because, like the dad in Spirited Away, I’m desperate for approval and attention but also too insecure to get it through honourable behaviour or making intelligent comments so instead I’m posting this, as if I’m at a ghostly restaurant where the ghostly chefs (Bluesky users) are putting plate after plate of food (posts and likes) in front of me and I’m just gobbling them all up, soon to transform into a bestial form and forget my own humanity until, LUCKY FOR ME, my daughter will come and rescue me. Thanks honey

Everyone’s got a Catholic-clergy joke up their sleeve, perhaps one they heard at a party. Mine is: A cop stops a car two priests are riding in. “I’m looking for a couple of child molesters,” he tells them. The priests look at each other. “We’ll do it!” they say.
