Crisis averted…for now! We seem to have managed to dry it out the right way (and the Apple Store confirmed!). Hoping it stays functional. 🤞

You know how sometimes when you have downtime while recovering from an ENT procedure you’re finally able to push through massive revisions in your YA and it’s unbelievable and then you spill water all over your laptop? I hope you don’t. (At least I have all my work set to auto-save to OneDrive!) 🫠

Y’all should’ve seen me the moment I heard this news. 🎉 Amy is the kindest soul and most supportive writer friend you’ll ever meet. Though this news is long overdue, I’m excited to see her books on all the shelves, continue being one of her CPs, and thrilled for the future of kidlit with her in it!

After years of being curious about my lineage, I finally received my ancestry results. Apparently I'm 12% Scottish Highlands cottage, 16% used bookstore, 9% October, 13% cat rescue, 11% rainswept cobblestone side street, 7% dimly-lit café in Prague, 17% scone, and 15% Oxford comma.

I’m probably the last parent to realize this but I finally figured out how to enjoy my iced tea or juice at the table without my toddler insisting she have some. In a mug. Where she literally can’t see it. I’m sure I’m late to this finding but holy gravy it’s changed my life.

We all have regrets in life, right? Well, I’m starting to think having those regrets is sometimes exactly what we need. Here’s why. open.substack.com/pub/jamiesev...

Me in college (in my late teens/early 20s): I am the go-to girl for six departments, serve on three activity boards, and take on every crazy opportunity thrown my way. Me in grad school (in my 30s): I am going in, getting that degree, and getting TF out of here.

My husband took our 3yo to the pool today. As they were leaving, a couple arrived and the guy said, "She's too cute, man!" Afterward, my husband said to our daughter, "You hear that? He said you're too cute!" And she said, "No, I'm not cute. I'm just smart." I have never been prouder of her.

And now I'll go back to sharing picture books I copyedited with my family and reminding them that, if they spot a typo, please do *not* tell me. 🫣

Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
We all love books, and we love supporting authors in their dreams. Where maybe one skill lags, we'll help them now and try to build it up for their next book, too. All anyone can do is their absolute best (and of course be open to feedback and suggestions).
120
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
They understand the weight that name placement carries. But know there's an entire team behind that one name, tons of discussion, querying, back-and-forth. If/when errors sneak through, it could be for a variety of reasons. That's why the team exists: to make the best (and error-free) book possible.
110
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
So the next time you open a book by a favorite author, or an author you're just getting to know, and you see a typo, or something you think isn't factually correct, I realize it's easy to point fingers at the name on the cover. And that's fair; it is their book, after all.
120
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
All this is to say that, while as an author you want to ensure you've self-edited and fact-checked yourself as substantially as possible, there will be queries. No one catches everything. A writer who's also a copy editor might have a cleaner manuscript, but I guarantee things were still missed.
110
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
That's why different kinds of editors exist: developmental, line, copy, proof. Yes, there are editors who specialize in multiple kinds of editing (my experience in professional editing work ranges from dev edits to copyediting and proofreading). And of course, many writers are also editors. 👋
110
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
My point is to say: You can be a great storyteller, but even the greatest authors in the world will miss things. Or be unfamiliar with certain things. And that's okay; that is why they have a literal team behind them. Because each component of writing represents a different skillset.
120
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
And if the author or editorial team chose to stet my suggestions, so be it. I had done my job. (Unless it was egregiously wrong, in which case I would fight to the death until they changed it.)
120
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
I (and many colleagues) have worked on books by well-known authors where the story itself was phenomenal, but many fact-checking queries came up, or typos, or inconsistencies. To the point where I thought, "How could I be fact-checking THIS author like this?" But working in Man Ed, that was my job.

Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
I will say, if you are truly in this profession for the long haul, you will learn the fundamentals at the very least. (Yes, understanding how to format dialogue is essential.) But nobody is perfect at *everything.*
120
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
I know this topic has been discussed in various forms already, but this conversation got me thinking about how not every great storyteller is necessarily as skilled at other components of storytelling: grammar, fact-checking, formatting.
130
Jamie Schlansky Evans @jamieevans.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
when a reader loves a book, they usually just associate it with the person who wrote it. Because, why wouldn't they? The author's name is literally on the cover! And growing up as a reader, I was certainly in that category.

I was recently thinking about the number of legendary storytellers who have contributed to kidlit. All amazing and unique in their own right. But the other day, while talking with family and sharing my experience getting to work on some of these authors' books, it occurred to me that,

Our 3yo has insisted on wearing her hair down pretty much every day for weeks (she used to love ponytails or space buns!). My husband just informed me she’s been telling him she wants to wear it down to be “just like Mommy.” If you need me I’ll be melting over in that corner. 😭

3yo, in rear-facing car seat: Mommy, what we gonna do? Me, driving: Huh? 3yo: That car right in front of me! Me: OH. You noticed the car tailing us! (Explains tailgating danger.) 3yo: Tailgating is NOT nice! My 3yo understands more about traffic safety than most ATL drivers.

100% agree. I do think I've felt a lot of growth this year, and honestly the small ways we can help one another often mean the most! And hello to a fellow Atlantan! There are many engineers in this city, aren't there? 😆

Reason #546 why I love book people: They are kind. My local B&N is closing and having a huge sale to clear out inventory. The line to get in was an hour long and wrapped around the building. It started raining and two awesome women offered to share their umbrellas with me. 🥹

Whenever my husband and I visit a bookstore, I love showing him books I worked on (I got very emotional seeing so many at Powell’s, but that’s another story). But I often worry people hear me and think, “Who is this weird person who thinks she copyedited these picture books?” 🙈

After reading our daughter a bedtime story, she randomly pointed to the cover and said, “Front cover,” then turned it and said, “Spine,” and then turned it again and said, “Back cover.” The way my eyes bugged out of my head. She’s not even three! (I bet it was you, daycare!) 🫶

I love reading and writing contemporary YA too, and yes, I have heard that it’s struggling as well. I do think stories that span beyond realistic settings will do better right now, but it pains me for the readers who are looking for and need those realistic stories.

I keep thinking about my speculative YA manuscript that I've revisited and revised over the years, the one that somehow also became a climate book. And I want to see where I can go with it. So...to keep my writing juices flowing, that's where I'll focus. And eventually query. 🤞

I made a hard choice recently, after a middle grade IP project I was approached about writing didn't come to be: I'm going to focus more on my YA for a bit. I love middle grade, and it's been suffering in the industry. I'm not abandoning my stories there; I'm taking a breather.

It was August 21, 2024. Zoey passed away on August 13, 2024. Ellie was born basically a week after Zoey died. I am a firm believer in fate, though it’s often complicated for me. But this was a gentle reminder that there is always a light waiting for you after darkness. 🐾✨

When we took her to her first vet appointment, the records from the rescue listed a couple different birthdates and we wanted to see which one might be the most accurate. The vet then noticed a third date in one of the records and said that one seemed to make the most sense…
