Difftastic is really wonderful, thank you for your work! When I’m not on my own set up, standard git diffs are jarring.

Would you agree that hitting an LLM api endpoint is far simpler than successfully setting up cloud infrastructure, which is inherently far more stateful?

Jamie Donaldson @jamiedonaldson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
I’ll grant that “if you build … around a single provider”, you’d be somewhat locked in, but I don’t think people are doing that. The fact that there are tons of LLM routing services, and the consumer facing products let you pick the model shows they are interchangeable.

Jamie Donaldson @jamiedonaldson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
Yes, I think the margin will shrink as the market matures and stabilizes. I think public cloud services are not analogous because LLMs have low switching costs. I’m not sure what a good analogy is, maybe wireless telecom services; basically a utility, except no monopoly.

Jamie Donaldson @jamiedonaldson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
LLM-as-a-service will not be a high margin business, so they should make as much money selling hardware as they can during the exuberance. There is no network effect, no customer loyalty, no API lock-in, and no way to stop distillation attackers from undercutting them. It’s a commodity.

Wouldn’t the wealth of the bettors skew this? Since net worth follows a power law distribution, I’d expect that to be reflected in the sizes of bets and therefore the distribution of profits.

This one’s my favorite
Comic with two panels. The left panel shows an incoming call with a caller ID picture consisting of two bald men looking reassuringly at the viewer.

The right side panel shows one of the men in the caller ID picture reaching through the screen to answer the call.

Hmmm, I guess it’s good for the memory pre-fetcher if you’re lookups follow that pattern. Otherwise, it’s just a biased distribution. Comparing the Hilbert maps for FNV1a and DJB2a convinced me of FNV1a’s superiority. softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/49...

They’re also more convenient, imo. I used to hate devices with AA and AAA batteries, but I prefer them since I got a set of rechargeables. I always have a dozen batteries sitting in the charger. Just swap and go, no being tethered to a cable while it charges.

Ironically, if you want to see fewer normal people participating in this, more insider trading helps discredit the whole idea. The more obviously unfair it is, the less likely they’ll be to participate.

What’s the complexity that is inadequately acknowledged about warrantless, secret, domestic mass surveillance? It was secret because they knew it was wrong and the public would be outraged.
