Went to see Princess Mononoke on the big screen tonight. Stumbled out with eyes widened and soul nourished

Rewatched seasons 1 and 2 of Colin from Accounts, then smashed S3. Damn-near perfect. So funny, as always, but more moving this time out. A deep seam of melancholy. And that ending is exquisite

First watch of Chabrol’s La Femme Infidèle (1969). Masterful dissection of Bourgeoisie mores. The scene where a young child rages at his parents and then switches gears to politely greet a stranger by shaking hands is a perfect expression of the masks we don. All-timer of a final shot, too

Walked Gene through the shopping centre to get to park this morning, and The Delafonics’ ‘Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time’ was playing. A sign that it’s time for my annual rewatch of Jackie Brown, which remains Tarantino’s best film

Started The Pitt this week. 9 episodes in. I find it oddly relaxing. Not sure why given it’s non-stop patch-ups and ops in a clogged emergency ward with a never-diminishing queue of patients. Maybe it’s the competency of the staff. I look forward to watching after a busy day

Watched Mike Flanagan’s series of Carrie today. Eight 50-minute eps, back-to-back. Thoughts when the embargo lifts

Don’t feel Tony has got quite the love it deserves in reviews. I’d much rather zoom in on a formative summer in someone’s life than watch a cradle-to-the-grave biopic. Transported me to a time and place. Beautifully made. My man-crush on Leo Woodall has hit new heights

Watched the first 5 eps of HBO’s illicit-sex-in-the-suburbs crime-com DTF St.Louis yesterday. Can’t get enough, so to speak. Nobody does mundanity mixed with murder better than Jason Bateman

Went on a safari today on a tract of land that has been rewilded. The sign listed wild boar, deer, beavers, and more. We saw a dragonfly and the backend of a horse

The End of Oak Street is a lovely blend of intimacy and scale. Funny, thrilling, genuinely scary, and chock-full of masterfully staged set-pieces. It’s the dino movie that Spielberg might have made in the early 80s, if CGI had developed a decade earlier than it did 🦖 🦕

I’ve not yet seen the Tony that is out this weekend, with Dominic Sessa playing a young Anthony Bourdain. But it’s going to have to go some to match this grubby beauty

Absolutely. It’s a nasty trend in this year’s movies, and nearly always unnecessary.

I was called “four eyes” for the first time in years yesterday, by a cyclist as he passed me in Soho. Didn’t realise it was a denigration that was still employed, given how many of us wear glasses. Stupidly, it still stung. I was straight back in the classroom in the 1980s

RIP Chuck Russell. Much as I enjoy The Mask, I’ll always remember him - and salute him - for his first two features: A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob. They are, respectively, the best Elm St sequel and one of the finest horror remakes

First watch of Cry of the Banshee (1970), starring Vincent Price as a witch-hunting magistrate. The cruelty still stings, and there are flashes of gaudy gore that were shocking at the time. Best of all, Terry Gilliam created the animated title sequence

The Odyssey at BFI IMAX this morning. Nolan’s finest since Interstellar. Side note: remember those rumours that he was making a horror film, before it dropped that he was adapting Homer’s epic poem? Well, there’s a scene in this that confirms he’d make a GREAT horror film

Patio being dug up today. Guys rung me as I worked upstairs and said, “You better come down and see what we’ve found.” Turned out to be a well. My mind had immediately gone to bodies so it was quite the relief

Conversation with my mum this w/e. Mum: “You know Jenny who I used to work with at the hospital when you were a toddler?” Me: “No.” Mum: “She died 7 years ago. And you know her husband, Pat?” Me: “No.” Mum: “He died 5 years ago. And you know their son, Pete?” Me: “No.” Mum: “He died this year.”

When I said goodbye to my 8-yr-old niece on Sunday, she asked if we could have a movie night next time she comes to stay. She suggested hot dogs, hot chocolate, popcorn and *two* movies. She’s a great niece

Clint’s retired? 70 years in the business. What a career, in front of the camera and behind it. Avoiding naming the obvious titles, I’m especially fond of note-perfect Charlie Parker biopic Bird and elegiac romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County.

Walked through a graveyard today and one of the graves was being tended to by a whole family. Together they were changing the flowers and cleaning the headstone and clipping the grass. I found it profoundly moving

Don’t miss Curry Barker’s Obsession, in cinemas tomorrow. It’s fun, playful and really fucking intense. No punches pulled. Toxic codependency taken to extremes. Barker’s going to be a major player in the horror genre

I often call my dog Gene by the nickname Genie. I was talking to Gene in coffeeshop just now and a guy said, “Is he Genie?” I said, “Gene, but we call him Genie.” He said, “I won’t tell you my name then.” Turned out to be Aladdin. Officially the only Aladdin in Oxfordshire, he said. Meant to be.

I rated Caveat and really rated Oddity but Hokum is a step up for Damian McCarthy. V few genre filmmakers possess such mastery of mood. Put me in mind of Lawrence Gordon Clark’s work in the A Ghost Stories for Christmas series in the 1970s. Sustained suspense of the highest order.

Love this. I adore a movie set on a train. The season is running at BFI Southbank throughout July. Great selections. The three I’d add are Keaton’s The General, Peter Hyams’ underrated Narrow Margin, and Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan

Back in the day I was teaching the history of VFX to 14yos: ‘The CGI in Terminator: Judgment Day was revolutionary for its time as can be seen with the T-1000 which-‘ ‘Sir,’ ‘Yes?’ ‘That thing on its shoulder looks like one of my nan’s crushed Bakewell tart tins.’ ‘Thanks. As I said, revolutionary.’

My wife’s added this to my key ring and I’m now spending dog walks on red alert, scanning for fallen bees in need to replenishment. Feel like a stretcher-bearer in the Korean War

Rewatches of two 90s horror movies featuring David Arquette today: Scream 2 and Ravenous. The latter is every bit as lyrical and queasily disturbing as I remember it, but funny, too. Did I miss that 27 years ago, or just don’t recall? Positively Monty Python in places.

One of my faves as a teen. Still great. A rung below the major Scorsese, Coppola and De Palma crime movies, but (mean) streets above anything we get in the genre these days. Oldham’s best US performance - has the edge and explosive energy of his early UK work
