I’d agree with prosecutions and also heavy sanctions until the illegal settlements in the West Bank are dismantled too. On your case of Germany which committed crimes on a far worse scale, while there was an initial occupation and trials, (west) Germans regained self determination just 4 yrs later.

Australia was settled at the expense of the Aboriginal peoples, Pakistan partitioned from India with millions being made refugees in both directions, Japan committed horrendous war crimes in WW2. Yet none of that negates the right of self determination that the citizens of those countries have.

That Israelis living in the established state of Israel (but not the illegally occupied territories which should become a Palestinian state) have a right to determination in their existing state in the same way Australians, Pakistanis, Japanese etc etc have a right to self determination in theirs.

But it wouldn’t be. And I don’t think a single state with two violently feuding ethnic groups is likely to resolve the situation - more likely a Lebanon style civil war and violence that exceeds even the current level.

James @jamesyookay.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But if one believes Israel and the occupied territories currently constitute an ethnostate an Israel within the pre 67 borders alongside a Palestinian state is a perfectly reasonable way (and most likely to stop further bloodshed) of resolving that situation.

James @jamesyookay.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
No the intent of the Green Party is not that Israel complies with international law, dismantles the settlements and withdraws to the pre 67 borders, but that Israel should cease to exist. The two are very different things.

The government were talking about an age restriction on social media to protect the young, perhaps we need another to protect the pensioners.

As a dual UK DE citizen I’m very much in favour of having a figurehead that is not directly elected be it a King or a President. It was a delight seeing Chazza chiding congress about the perils of an unchecked executive branch on his state visit.

I'd agree that the actions of the Billionaire class and venue owners deciding who can play or not is the real story.

In general I think it's best that light entertainers keep their political opinions, religious affiliation, etc, to themselves. Just because someone can sing, act, or strum a guitar doesn't make them an expert on geopolitics, and often is just cringy and self indulgent. Exhibit A:

I'd cut the copyright term to 20 years, the same as patents and scrap DRM. Long enough to create an incentive to create new works (video games and films are expensive to produce) but avoiding the problems of excessively long copyright terms, orphaned works, out of print works etc.

Also, consciousness and conscious experience is orthogonal to being able to produce (sometimes!) coherent text output. I‘m pretty sure our dog is conscious but ChatGPT isn’t.

Indy is a bad idea for the same reason that Brexit was, putting up trade barriers to your largest market is never going to make economic sense. Also the whole ‘ruled by Westminster‘ schtick is no different from Farage’s little englander ‘ruled by Brussels’ line. It’s just grievance mongering.

Scotland has plenty of self determination, it has its own parliament and had a vote as recently as 2014 on its constitutional status. You just don’t happen to like the result.

To be fair given their notorious unreliability and massive depreciation leasing one is probably the most sensible way to go for those that want one.

And New Zealand allows all permanent residents to vote. Both New Zealand and Australia have the virtue of being consistent. The UK in allowing some non-citizens to vote but not others is just daft. I’d go with the New Zealand option - if you live somewhere and pay taxes you should have a say.

Do note though that Reform’s predecessor parties courted the votes of Commonwealth citizens in the Brexit referendum, something they seem happy the forget now.

They are also eligible to be an MP toI so you could have a Minister who isn’t a British citizen. The only issue I have with it is that if we allow some non-citizens to vote why not allow permanent residents from non Commonwealth countries to vote as well?

Never mind a gateway to AI, I'm increasingly feeling that my phone is a gateway to an increasingly enshittified web (in large part due to AI slop), which makes me want to give it up completely. Already turned the screen to grayscale to make the thing less appealing to use for casual doom scrolling.

Overcompensating for their personal inadequacies. Doesn't say much about someone if they think that the best thing about themselves is the group that they were randomly born into.

Very 1984 Ministry of Truth Vibes. I think we need a regulation for News Organisations so that if an article is edited after initial publication there has to be an edit history like you have on Wikipedia so people can see the changes made - not a problem if it is an innocent typo correction etc.

Just go with the German voting system with two votes too. Half the parliamentary seats are for a local MP via FPTP and the other half are filled so as to make the system Proportional to the national vote. Best of both worlds: PR but also a locally elected MP.
