This is a list of practices that together offered a (partial) picture of the distinctive habitus of early Christians. We could do worse in putting together a program of renewal and expectations for members. 📕 (From *The Patient Ferment of the Early Church*)
The habitus of the early Christians knitted together distinctive behavioral acts, borne in their bodies, that revealed their fundamental values. On the basis of what we have seen so far in this book, components of the habitus included:
• Meeting frequently: The Christian community is the believers' primary community.
• Standing in prayer, arms raised:
Christians are confident that they are in touch with the powerful God who can defeat the powers that hold people captive.
• Praising and thanking God: God, who raised Jesus from the dead, is at work;
Christians can be patient, believing that in him all things are possible, that no action on their part is urgent.
Patience grows out of praising the God who holds all things securely.
• Making the sign of the cross: Christians recall Christ's saving work and appropriate his protective presence.• Eating together (at eucharistic and other meals): Christians share the table as a new family.
• Giving the kiss of peace: Christians bond together in love, as equals.
• Memorizing texts (the Sermon on the Mount, Isaiah 2:2-4, and many others): Christians inwardly appropriate resources that encourage them and point to new possibilities.
• Visiting the poor, the sick, and prison-ers: Christians declare that people have dignity and that deeds matter.
• Exercising hospitality: Christians receive and feed visitors.
• Putting money in the collection box:
Christians voluntarily contribute to the common fund, enacting and embodying the belief that poor people matter and that sharing is a fundamental value.
• Replenishing the stocks of food and clothing: Christians care for each other.• Feeding needy people: Christians care for outsiders and enemies.
• Discerning carefully: Christians decide what in culture to say yes to and what to say no to.
• Being truthful: Christians do not swear oaths.
• Maintaining sexual purity: Christians are faithful to marriage partners, and do not look lustfully on others.
• Observing disciplines that limit impatient behavior: Christians do not retaliate, do not abort or expose in-fants, do not kill, do not watch blood sports.
• Being willing to lose out (in business, law, and verbal arguments): Christians exercise patience, and do not litigate or coerce.
• Allowing people to leave the church:
Christians do not compel belief.
• Facing death without fear: Christians can live riskily and experimentally.

It feels like @benjamindcrosby.bsky.social has provided me with a diagnosis for a sense of dis-ease I have long had.

I think many people really underestimate how likely a new pandemic is to occur in the next four years. Even if you think of a pandemic as a once-in-a-century event, that's a 4% chance over the next four years. And I think in the world we live in a pandemic is far from a once-in-100 years event. 🧪

X/Twitter has gotten worse than Facebook at flooding my feed with rage bait videos. Nothing drives me away more than that kind of lowest common denominator engagement farming.

One thing that Christians who want to fight back against Christian nationalism probably need to recognize is we gotta get the Bible down cold. We need to have large parts of it memorized chapter and verse. We need to have it memorized in versions those churches use.

Today was my last day at St. James. I thought I was going to make it through the service without crying but the concluding prayer got me in the end. Looking forward to going home and excited about my new role but there is a lot I'm going to miss here.

As far as the 95 Theses go, we can all agree at this point that Luther was right, yeah?
