James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 6hI understand what your saying and get your frustration. Most properties that I work in (Somerset area) buy supermarket apples that have been flown to the uk even though they have trees in their own gardens. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 7hLeave them on the tree or ground and feed a multitude of species . If you’re concerned they look untidy then put them in neat piles around the trees . Starlings, Blackbirds, Redwings, Thrushes, Fieldfare , mice, Foxes, Badgers etc , even the soil bacteria will love them. 100
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026As there were subsidies given to farmers to take away orchards why can’t we reverse this policy and give grants to put some back ? 040
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Material wealth and currency cannot sustain human life once the natural ecosystems providing air, water, and food are destroyed. The Tories are desperately trying to accomplish this. 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Most gardens have the space for a dead hedge. Simply pile up leaves. tree and shrub cuttings. It provides winter hibernation for many species, hedgehog ,slow worm and small mammal habitat and safety from cats. Wrens , robins and even blackbirds will nest in larger ones. 3143
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 05/10/2026To the NI Badger cull consultation - Please for the love of god somebody in your organization look at the scientific facts! Culls only appease Farmers , they don’t reduce BTB! 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 05/10/2026By abandoning net-zero commitments and pushing for fossil fuel expansion, the leadership has shown that corporate wealth far outweighs environmental health. 1340
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 05/10/2026‘Get rid of all the green crap.’ The far right, Tory , Lib and Labour parties are focused on short term economic growth and energy costs. What we need are strong, radical nature and climate policies that none of them will deliver. 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Why not make your own? It’s satisfying and easy to make. I make great compost just by mixing alternate layers of grass cuttings and cardboard. Check out Charles Dowding for great advice. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Dry seed heads provide food for birds over Winter, shelter for hibernating insects and soil protection from frosts . As gardeners do we want interest , beauty , life and nature or bare , empty soil and manicured silence ? 121
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Biggest problem is that most farmers don’t cut their own hedges. They use contractors that have zero connection, interest or love for nature. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The law - hedge trimming on farmland is banned March - August 31st to protect Wildlife. Would be helpful if all the vital food wasn’t then destroyed to protect the same wildlife. 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Meanwhile farmers and their contractors are now busy ‘tidying up’ the countryside. Senselessly removing wildlife’s Autumn and Winter food . Is it rocket science to trim a hedge when the berries are gone? 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Why are an estimated 50% of UK councils still routinely spraying glyphosate? 020
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Decay , disease and dead trees are all vital components of balanced ecosystems. Without dead wood we would lose countless biodiversity AA well as nesting habitat for many bird species . 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Problem is half of the councils in the UK are still routinely spraying glyphosate in parks, roadsides and anywhere else they can. Our taxes are giving us poisoned plants and trees, killing bees and other pollinators and giving people cancer. 001
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 29/09/2026We need more awareness and education ( even signs ) about the importance of leaving deadwood alone. Most of the ‘ well intentioned’ piles that are left get taking away by people for home fires. 021
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 29/09/2026As a gardener clients often ask me to do a major tidy up in the Autumn. I politely say , would it be better to have manicured , lifeless beds or to enjoy the beauty of the seed heads over Winter and provide food and hibernation for many species? 120
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 29/09/2026At this time of year try and leave as much garden material to overwinter as possible. It makes little difference to us if we tidy up now or in Spring but it means survival or death to many garden species. 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 26/09/2026 Our obsession with aviation captures the ultimate modern paradox: we are passionately in love with the freedom, connection, and wonder of flight, even as its environmental toll silently erodes the very planet that sustains us. 000

James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 18/09/2026. This disturbance can result in direct mortality, for example due to nest trampling or dogs hunting, but wildlife can also avoid their habitat altogether as a result of human presence, for example causing birds to abandon their nests. 100

James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Dr Durwyn Liley, Director at Footprint Ecology, analysed direct habitat damage resulting from increased access to nature – from contamination from litter, dogs and the spread of non-native species, to indirect effects such as wildlife disturbance. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Volunteers near my house try to prevent Skylark eggs and chicks from being destroyed by dogs and owners during nesting. They are reg abused and nests are trodden on every year 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Nest Abandonment: Constant disruption leads to chronic stress. Ground-nesting species, such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's protected curlews or lapwings, will completely abandon their clutches if the human footprint becomes too dense. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 17/09/2026The reality is that they destroy countless young trees , eat a huge amount of birds eggs and young chicks, carry squirrel pox that kills the Reds and cause considerable damage in peoples lofts. 010
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 17/09/2026That might work out for you but if Curlews , Lapwings , plovers , Skylarks , Grouse and Puffins etc are being decimated by unknowing people and their dogs it won’t work for them. Certain places will have to be public free if we want to keep them.‘Let’s destroy what we like looking at .’ 100
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I agree with that but …. When ,and if , responsible access comes we will need to protect breeding areas and fields containing ground nesting birds such as Skylarks otherwise people and dogs will destroy what they are looking at. 100

James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Im not expecting the local council to make and maintain a WFM of the standard of Highgrove. Even if they left the verges alone to be cut once annually there would be a species increase.Time saves on sprays and reg cutting could go to more manpower to collect cuttings once a year. 000
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Councils using Wildflowers instead of standard practice would save money by using no pesticides and reduced man hours by no repeated mowing . Everyone will get the benefit of interest, beauty, colour and pollinators. Why aren’t they saving us money and helping biodiversity? 1117
James Flynn @jamespflynn.bsky.social · 13/09/2026There’s no reason why we couldn’t have wild flowers on every roadside verge, roundabout and central carriage ways of motorways . They could be cut once a year in late summer to stop the succession. 0113
